Grand Slam Of Darts 2011 12-20th Nov
First topic message reminder :
So, it starts on the 12th of November and i for one am exited as the time draws closer, its by far my favorite tournament of the year with players from both codes squaring off.
A few questions will be answerd, can Deano cut it in the PDC, can Dekker cope with constant 100+ scores and averages. Can Scotty Waites again topple the pdc and win the title, making a third consecutive final, or can Chizzy win it (couldnt leave that one out now could we)
A list of current qualifiers can be found here if anyone wishes to post them all feel free!
Start the discussion.
Who is your pick for the title?
Successes and failures?
Breakout star perhaps?
Random winner?

Simon Whitlock has withdrawn from the GSOD because of the ankle injury he sustained in Spain so Ian White takes his place.

I can't believe Bates is in Pool C. Surely Van Gerwen, Phillips and Chisnall should be ahead of Bates on this years form same goes for Dekker, Jones and Winstanley in Pool B ahead of Pipe, Part and Dolan

Must be because Dekker reached the semis and Winstanly the final, not sure about Phillips to me he would beat Dekker any day of the week, and Chisnall would likely hammer Dekker, rather strange ways of working this year... Funny having a BDO player seeded no 1 for a pdc tournament, do you think Taylor should have got it? Considering as much as i would love Scotty to do well i dont think he will do a good this year...braveheart101 wrote:I can't believe Bates is in Pool C. I thought Waites would have been in the top 4 seeded players but never thought he would be No.1
Fair enough Dekker got to Lakeside Semis but he didn't exactly beat a top player and hasn't done much since unlike Dolan, Pipe, Chisnall and Part

Well unless he gets drawn in the same group as Bates or Dekker he will have a hard job to qualify for the second round.
This years tournament looks a lot weaker than last years. Baxter, Lloyd, Whitlock, Osbourne, Thornton, Henderson, Hylton and Fitton replaced by Dolan, Heydon, Walsh, Part, White, Winstanley, Dekker, Caris, Bates and Hubbard

A- Waites, Walsh, O'Shea, van Gerwen
B- van Barenveld, Winstanley, Hankey, White
C- Anderson, Jones, Dolan, Heydon
D- Wade, Jenkins, Pipe, Chisnall
E- Taylor, King, Beaton, Hubbard
F- Newton, Nicholson, Bates, Caris
G- Webster, Dekker, Part, Monk
H- Lewis, van der Voort, Stompe, Phillips
What can i say about that, horrible draw for Chizzy, Pipe and Wade to go through, lets hope Chizzy can defeat Pipe again. Wade is always tough and Jenkins plays well at the GSOD.
Group A could be a cracking group, Waites will struggle vs O'shea.
Hankey and Winstanly both have a good chance in B
Going to go for Anderson and Heydon in group C
D- i think this is the group of death this year, (not reffering to Pipes pace
) Im hoping Chizzy and Wade take this one, with Chizzy winning the group, but Pipe is also a strong contender.
E. Taylor and Hubbard.
F-Nicholson and Newton
G-Dekker and Webby, (Dekker actually has a chance here, Part playing terrible on t.v, bar his win vs Lewis.)
H- Lewis and Phillips, I always think he has a chance, Phillips is an outstanding player, and i hope he avenges his narrow loss to stompe last year by winning this.
Some cracking matches there, although as you say it is weaker i will still througholy en

Yes but Chizzy will be riding high being the last player to win one. Also Pipe hasnt performed on t.v, Chizzy has, although the atmosphere at the Lakeside is nothing to the GSOD he knows how to win on t.v, something Pipe doesnt..ncfc_Tooze wrote:Yep just think that pipe has a bit of momentum on his side after the last few PCs

Chizzy had a half decent run in the UK Open, wouldn't say he performs on TV based on that. Especially after the World Grand Prix

Thing was the only reason he lost at the GP was nerves, he completly blitzed the first set 110 average, if he can throw anywhere near that standard again i think he is going to cope with the nerves, he knows how to win, just needs to relax, i think the GP was the last time we will have seen Chizzy loose it.Soldier_Of_Fortune wrote:A-Darts wrote:Yes but Chizzy will be riding high being the last player to win one. I didn't mean Dolan doesn't deserve to be there or that he isn't a good player I just included all the players (except the women) who were there last year and all the players who qualified this year. IMO only Dolan, Part and maybe Walsh have any chance of making it out of the group stage. I think Bates, Heydon, Winstanley and Hubbard will finish 4th and probably lose all 3 matches, Dekker, Caris and White will finish 3rd.

the grand slam has lost its champion v champion appeal which made this tournament work imo far too many places given to players undeserving of their place for example barrie bates has been troubled with injuries anyway but the fact he is in because he was the partner of mark webster who lets be honest got wales in the final dosent make much sence.

I totally agree patrick. There are a lot of players like Burnett, Baxter, Smith and even Caven who are far more deserving of a place than Bates. At least they have performed well in pro tour events and/or majors. On his day Bates can push any of the top players but he hasn't performed for well over a year and as you say if it wasn't for Webster he wouldn't be invited.

yes its not personal to bates when he qualifed in 07 is was deserved.
the qualification criteria needs a real shake up inviting players for highest ranking is stupid if they had so many places to give out why not major semi finalists sure more deserving and you would have had burnett hamilton etc.

Thats totally different, in 07 he qualified by right not through the efforts of another player.
I'm not against the highest ranked player from the main order of merit and players championship order of merit being invited but drop the European qualifier and the World U21 and World Cup Finalists and as you say invite the Major Semi Finalists either increase the numbers and have a preliminary round in the same way as they did in the World Darts Trophy. At least that way the best players will make the group stages.
Do the PDC really think that James Hubbard being drawn against Taylor, King and Beaton in his first televised competition and more than likely lose them all heavily is going to be good for his confidence and future career.

True she is the only woman not to be at the bottom of the avg and have a win to her name, but still a 1-14 win/loss record for woman (not trying to be sexist)

I think it's good that they haven't been invited but I don't know the reasons behind it. I thought that last years Women's PDC World Championship Finalists both got a 2 year invite and a 2 year tour card but rumour has it that seeing as Anastasia didn't reach the final the PDC changed the rules. I wonder if Anastasia wins Lakeside they will change again

Did she? I thought the only time the Women's Lakeside Finalists were invited was when Anastasia beat Francis then the PDC created their own Women's World Championship

1) Darts is an easy game to play, but a hard game to play well.
2) Look where you're throwing, throw where you're looking.
Grrr!
Best story I heard from Bobby George was when someone asked him what was the best match he ever saw at Lakeside he said that he played Priestley in an exhibition during the tournament and lost 6-0 with Dennis only throwing 59 darts. Think he went 10, 10, 10, 10, 9, 10 dart legs
I once attended an exhibition of Dennis Priestley's in Woolwich and he did 3 9 darters (one against me) Andy Fordham played in the same team as me at the time and he got battered too!
Best darting display I've ever seen.

Seeing as he is Ando the 2nd it must be 2 years and counting then. May/June 2013 will be his first major win in his fourth final![]()

Even if he loses to Wade I think he will still finish 2nd. I can't see Jenkins beating him and he should edge a tight game against JP. Personally I'd like both Pipe and Chizzy to qualify but don't think Pipe is used to playing on TV yet and will be third behind Chizzy and Wade

I have a notion Pipe might come good this tournament though, what would be intresting if Pipe, Wade and Chizzy played their best, who on earth would win 1st and second, im not sure at their best who is better, Chizzy if he hit his doubles could easily throw a 110 average, Pipe can average high and take out good checkouts, and Wade at his best is nearly certain to take out any finish over 120, would be great to see some of those kind of darts tonight!braveheart101 wrote:A-Darts wrote:I hope he wins one before then!!!
