Who is your favourite Doctor?
Dr Who
First topic message reminder :
Can't believe no-one has posted anything about quite possibly the greatest TV show ever made!
Well the new series is nearly upon us, and as I found this on youtube today Clicky, I thought I would start a new thread (its a new long trailer for the new series).
Feel free to talk about all of the series and doctors on here, although I would imagine that it will be predominantly made up of the reboot.
From the reboot, Matt Smith is by far my favourite. Never liked Ecclestone and although I liked Tennant, I just feel that the last lot of specials were terrible and tarnished his memory. Matt Smith plays him brilliantly and doesnt make me miss DT one bit.
So what are your opinions of this fantastic show and how good does that trailer look?

Ah but that is such a generational thing isn't it?
A toss up for me between Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, but I went for Pertwee in the end.
Not old enough to remember the first two. Never liked Sylvester McCoy, or Colin Baker. And I thought Paul McGann and Peter Davison were a bit meh.
Of the re-booted Dr Who, I thought Eccleston was brilliant. About time we had a Doctor with a northern accent. Tennant was pretty good too, but haven't seen any of the Matt Smith episodes yet. Must try and catch them on BBC America, while avoiding all the spoilers in this thread.
Pertwee & T.Baker both were fantastic, as an old schooler T.Baker simply was THE Doctor, no-one came close (though I actually liked the celery wearing Davidson too), C.Baker & McCoy weren't the best, I think at that point the Beeb had lost interest but the series long story with C.Baker was decent enough.
I'm from the North with quite a strong accent, just didn't like Eccleston though, he wanted it to be a much darker and grittier show it seemed and Tennants geek chic was a welcome relief for me afterwards. Matt Smith has simply amazed me, this Dr is a lot more reliant on his companions, often it's them that guide him rather than the other way round, very much a child like naivity to him at times. The characters nowadays just seem to have a huge amount more depth than they ever did.

that she was amy's daughter, with the mentioning of amy being pregnent in the first episode could it be true? Didn't River mention that she knew nothing about the doctor but he knew alot about her? well being amy's daughter would explain that a bit. Also Amy POND/RIVER Song, coincidence on the water reference thing?
The whole thing about Amy's baby is a bit confusing. The eye patch lady sounds like a midwife, but her true identity is anyone's guess at the moment.
I can't wait to find out the true intentions of The Silence and why they needed the little girl. In Day of the Moon, they said to Amy: "We give you honor, you will bring The Silence. But your path will soon be over."
Suggests the little girl was Amy's kid. But if the little girl is actually

Re: Dr Who
Thought it was a great episode - the interplay between Smith and the Tardis was great and made him seem more "alien" than the last two docs have been.
I grew up with Tom Baker and never thought he would be bettered (hated Ecclestone and only liked Tenant until the special one offs that were awful) but I can genuinely say that Smith is fantastic in the role.

Re: Dr Who
Again a hugely dark episode (and includes my mate Marshall Lancaster) and it's a builder towards the mid season break episode.
Re: Dr Who
I actually really enjoyed it.
Thats two weeks in a row where the trailer doesnt look good but I have ended up enjoying it.
Anyone reckon that the ganger Doctor is the one we see shot?

Well that ending was a turn up for the books!
I quite enjoyed the episode and thought it handled some of the underlying ideas very well. It was quite touching in parts.
A few things that I am puzzled by though:
The Doc now knows about his death.
Who knocked up Amy?
How long had she been "flesh"
And spoilers for next week (I watched the trailer):

And a big spoiler is that the Omega sign can quite clearly be seen a few times in the trailer - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega_(Doctor_Who)
This is who I reckon will be the end of season baddie.

Re: Dr Who
A lot of shows, especially in America, seem to do this break thing now where they leave it on a bit of a cliffhanger before bringing it back a month or two later, it is strange and I can never work out why they do it.
I am hoping that Sherlock takes its place for at least a couple of those weeks, as that show was excellent.
I am looking forward to when Dr. Who comes back, I am glad they tied up some loose ends before the break, otherwise that would be incredibly infuriating. But we still don't know who the 'good man' River Song killed, and the more the series goes on, the more I am moving with the theory that she kills Rory, as he is being built up as almost perfect.
Don't read the next bit if you haven't seen the latest episode:

I guess that's the suspense to make us watch the second half of the season. My view on the "good man" don't read if you haven't seen the last episode:
- Spoiler:
- I have always assumed it to be the Doctor, with the latest episode being called A good man goes to war, I thought this meant the Doctor but Rory is definitely being built up as a good man throughout the series and he also went to war. I still think it's the Doctor though as I believe the astronaut who killed the Doctor in the first episode was Amy's daughter and therefore would be River Song.

The final 6 episodes of this series will begin to be shown at some point in September, also 14 new episodes have been commissioned featuring Matt Smith as the Doctor but it's not yet known when they will aired, there is also a Christmas episode for this year.

- Currently watching The Time of Angels episode from Matt Smith's first series, and at the start River Song is shown carving a message into a home box, but she's using old Gallifreyan.

whats the significance of the old galifrean?
Also, the Xmas episode has historically been counted in the series total - in other words this season was also 14 episodes (7+6+1)
Torchwood soon as well! Its going back to its weekly timeslot for this run:

Re: Dr Who
For me it has to be David Tennant (or McDonald as he was originally christened).
I've never seen another actor play the Doctor's different facets so well. The madcap schoolboy, the all-knowing and ancient Time Lord, the pacifist / diplomat and the ruthless destroyer...and I've been watching since Tom Baker. Watching him opposite John Sim as The Master was just excellent.
Old Tom was probably the next best. Matt Smith is like a younger version of him. I would agree they were/are probably the most "alien" and lean towards the oddball side.
Matt, Tom and David seem(ed) to play the role very naturally - almost like they were born to it. Chris Ecclestone wasn't bad, but for some reason, he never struck me as the genuine article. Peter Davison was too much of a gent and Colin Baker didn't really register with me at all.

- good to see the cybermen apparantly getting a bigger part in the 2nd half of the series, thought they were only getting that bit at the start of the last episode. Also very good to see the angles again, imo probably the creepiest of the doctor who characters.
Assumed we would see more of the silence, coincidence that thingy from the last episode and river have a patch over the same eye and could look alike if they were older/younger versions of same person, however this being flawed by what we say river looked like when she died in the library

I'm a massive Dr Who fan (started watching Matt Smith's first series and now have all the DVDs since the re-launch!) I can't wait for it to come back on. Smith and Gillan are class, best doctor and companion in my opinion.
Re: Dr Who
Matt Smith seems to be very popular on here, but I'll be honest, I don't rate him. Don't get me wrong, he's OK, but not a patch on Ecclestone or Tennant IMO. I don't think it's all his fault, I just feel that too much changed at once, what with the head writer, companion, TARDIS layout and theme tune also changing.

i thought the actress playing 'mels' was aweful.
Really enjoyed the episode though. Thought it was excellent throughout, with matt Smith being the highlight.
Alex Kingston revelled in the bad girl role and played it for fun - great stuff.
Really liked the idea of the history police - hopefully that idea will come back at some time.
A couple of questions I have though - why was the docs regeneration switched off and what is the question that is the silence?

Re: Dr Who
So are the creatures not called the Silence? Just part of the cult named the Silence? That's what confused me the most about this episode.
As for the question:
What is the Doctor's name?
Who created the universe?
What is the meaning of life?
My two picks would be:
Why are we here?
and
Will you marry me?

Re: Dr Who
I quite enjoyed the show last night - it was similar to the Tennant episode "fear her" which is widely regarded as the worst epsiode since Who came back.
The acting was very good and I thought the visuals were excellent. The way it was filmed was very good - the colours especially.
Anyway, on to the episode - the dolls were very creepy especially when the landlord got caught and then swivelled his head.
Daniel Mays and the boy who played George were also very good - I could see them as companions in the future to be honest - really liked the father character.
However, the star, as he is every week, was Matt Smith. Simply brilliant - the speech he made reminded me of Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner - it was that good. The bit where he talked about having "old eyes" was totally believable. Even though he is young, you feel he is old.
The two downsides, however were:
1. The lack of continuation of the season arcl. However this can be dismissed as this was originally shot as episode 3 of the series which means the River song story wouldnt have been known at this point.
2. The landlord - he still wants his money - this was never resolved! Yes George was saved, but their family problems were still there!
I enjoyed it as a whole, certainly better than Fear Her.

Re: Dr Who
My mistake it was meant to be episode 4 - the reason on wiki is that they wanted more variety in the first block of 6. Which makes sense as the original two parter was a cry for help from the girl in the spacesuit, episode 3 was the curse of the black spot which had the boy trying to help his father.
Having said that, the Curse of the Black spot was originally a second half episode, with the scene of the pirates from "a good man goes to war" shot later to help the narrative of the switch.
I guess the "more variety" would be due to Amy being isolated in a house with creepy things in it (from the Silence episode" was similar to this one.
I think they made the wrong choice and should have left this as the original 3rd episode.
Next weeks looks very Alice in Wonderland to me.

I actually have every Doctor Who (From An Unearthly child, 1963) and Star Trek VHS videos on shelves in my room
I went for Colin Baker, though I do change my mind a lot, but he was the guy when I was a kid, though only the last half of the episode as A-Team was on at the same time
Colin Baker is a great guy though, I always loved him when I went to conventions.
I always felt Jon Pertwee was trying to take advantage of fans and bleed them dry, though it was for charity. Though he was nice to me when I met him, as was Sylvester McCoy, though McCoy is a nut case!

Obviously not every episode is going to slot into the season-long story-line, and I think this episode worked very well as a stand-alone. It was just enjoyable to watch without having to think about where people are in their respective time-lines or anything.

Re: Dr Who
Well can I just say I thought last nights episode was awesome.
Future Amy is still hot! That was also possibly the best aging makeup I have seen on TV - quite often it looks unrealistic but that was spot on.
rory continues to be awesome and is the best character of the 3 leads. Dont get me wrong, the other 2 are fantastic too but Rorys character has grown far more than Amy's has over the 2 seasons with Matt smith.
Interesting lines in the episode about changing the future if you are aware of it - obviously in reference to the Doc dying in episode one.
Loved every minute of last nights episode - fine acting and pulled at the heartstrings at times.
Simply fantastic - possibly the best Smith Doctor episode so far.
