European Tour - Maybank Malaysian Open
The European Tour begins its Far East mini series of 3 events with the Maybank Open in Malaysia (China and Korea to follow). Last year the event's profile benefited from some unexpected extra exposure with the participation of the previous Masters winner and 'loser' (Schwartzel and Rory) as well as from the great win of young Matteo Manassero. A chubbyless Rory chose not to return this year, but both Charl and Matteo are back and they are joined by the new in-form Masters runner up Louis Oosthuizen as well as the former world #1 Martin Kaymer.
And the two high profile Saffers are not dissappointing this morning... Charl is leading after a brilliant 8-under par 1st round, with King Louis just two shots back. Matteo and Kaymer are late starters and are making now their way up the leaderboard after some rather slow starts. Others playing well include Jeev Milkha with a great 7-under round and a few others who have shown success or return to form in recent weeks, e.g. C-Bello, Kjieldsen, Siem, Gallacher, Larrazabal, etc...
P.S. If you wonder what happened to Richard S. Johnson who appeared as W/D from Harbour Town in South Carolina, well he just turned up the other side of the world in Kuala Lumpur and already has 3 birdies after 5 holes...

Prince, sorry to hijack your article but I see Darren Clarke has remarried. Delighted for him and his new bride. Apparently she is a fantastic stepmum to his two boys.

Cheers Rava, saw that in the news this morning, hopefully this was also the reason why his mind didn't seem to be quite on the golf course these last few weeks. Good to see their matchmaker joining them on the beach for the ceremony...

Re: European Tour - Maybank Malaysian Open
Counted no less than 14 'chubbies' in the Malaysian field and with that kind of presence there's no real surprise that the ISM stable owns 1st, 2nd and one of the T3 places after the first round...
None of the later starters apart from one or two low key Indian players have been making any significant strides among the leading pack... Matteo, Lewis and Kaymer with decent starts but hopefully they can show something extra over the next days. Dismal starts from Horsey and Hoey...

Really good leaderboard, don't you think?
Richard S. was in the original field here, think there must have been a clerical snafu at Harbour Town; he was never qualified for that event otherwise he'd've played it!
Strange having the Kings Charl and Louis playing in the same 3-some; poor old Thonchai probably has a hard time with Afrikaans . . . . . .
No sign of Rory in the DC / GM photo - imagine he must be cheerleading in Copenhagen.

Agreed on the Maybank leaderboard. Not sure, but I think I'm also noticing a slight improvement in the overall performance of the US golfers on the ET this year, but we shall see if that will last...
As for DC, just read a comment suggesting it was very bad timing for him to pick up a groin strain just before his honeymoon...

I dont think the rest of the chubby stable were all too happy about Rory leaving, so maybe he did not receive an invitation.
I think this event was worth 42 points last year.

So Camp Chubby is well represented in Malaysia. Hasn't he claimed that he does not "bundle" his players?
Are Clarke and Westy the only ISM clients not playing, that are qualified to play?

Re: European Tour - Maybank Malaysian Open
As kwini said, it's turning a bit like the South African Open, apart from the weather maybe, play suspended for the day... Playing early seems to be an advantage over there and Otto and Kruger have taken full advantage today. Kaymer, Colsaerts and Quiros also having very good rounds among the early starters.
GPB, not sure what to say about Chubby and him 'bundling' his players... Maybe true to some extent, sometimes, but on the other hand it's hard to generalise it... you hardly see Louis and Charl, or Westy or Clarke playing that much together with the others from the ISM stable, and among those 4 'stars', they seem to me to have pretty much independent schedules most of the time. Maybe Charl and Louis can play together more often, but that's more likely to be because they're very close friends...
...and related to Mac's comment, indeed this year's tournament would've been worth again 42 pts if Rory was in it.
And a silly comment... watching Jbe' these days, is he trying to look taller with that raised collar look...? Not sure if it's true, but some people say that those who like that style are usually overly concerned with their hight... Gonzo is another one known for that particular style and although if you look at him he looks pretty tall (6ft 1"), when you see him together with his wife all that perspective changes somewhat...

@Kwini
Rory is in Copenhagen this week. Cheerleading Caroline in her own tournament.
A game of golf, has there been time to, but not outdoors ... It was only for a little game along with Caro's brother Patrik, at Simgolf Copenhagen.
I sent him an invitation to play in Saturday's elite match with me

Re: European Tour - Maybank Malaysian Open
The South African party appears to disintegrate, at least temporarily, but it's amazing how Louis is still capable to play so well inspite of what went on last week and all the travel, jetlag, etc... Plus these weather interruptions to the normal play couldn't help either... Hope he can carry this through and win, because he certainly deserves one at the moment. Stephen Gallacher seems to be in good form as well with C-Bello and Danny Willet following close behind.
And here's another shout out for the young American David Lipsky (yet another very good American golfer with Korean background), who I've pencilled in as one to watch for this year on the Asian Tour after he came from nowhere a couple of weeks ago to win his first official tournament in Cambodia in only his 3rd event played as a pro (after that he credited his win in part to some words of advice from Luke Donald on twitter)! The week after that he came T2 in the next AT event in Singapore and here he is now making his presence felt straight away in his first high-profile tournament appearence... His bio says that he graduated from the Northwestern Univ. in Chicago and decided to join the Asian Tour taking some advice from Charlie Wi and Ben Fox. Veni, vidi, vici... so he came over and won the 2012 Asian Tour Q-School!
P.S. jp - hope your match with Rory went well today...
Certainly Caroline seems to be doing well so far in her tournament (is that really her tournament as in Tiger/Chevron setup...?!)

Northwestern. Luke Donald's University - very selective, have to be pretty bright to get in there.
Gary Boyd in with another good round; goldwolf will be very pleased to see that.

They say Lipsky majored in political science. Not sure what Luke studied there? Wines...?
Wonder if they'll be able to finish tomorrow with all these interruptions? Cutting it at 54 holes on the other hand, may be the best option for Oosty considering all that jetlag...

Time to crash when Oosthuizen is still leading.
Probably wouldn't be much consolation, but hope he's still ahead in the a.m.

Re: European Tour - Maybank Malaysian Open
Turned out into a bit of a procession for King Louis. Very, very, impressive, stylish, classy, you can go on and on... Finishing 3rd, 2nd and now 1st in the last 3 weeks, from Texas to Augusta and then Malaysia! Really looking forward to watch him for the rest of the year...
Great runner up place for Gallacher, solid performance from C-Bello and another impressive top 3 for the rookie David Lipsky (for 3rd time in the last 3 weeks). As for Danny Willett, he sort of threw away a great chance to finish much better with a double and triple bogey on the card, but did very well in the end to get back on the podium... Kaymer another one who could've finished much better, but he looked really cooked out there on the back nine making a number of silly mistakes. Not able to defend his title in the end, but another top 10 for Matteo is not bad at all and he can continue to build on this and improve over the coming weeks...

Re: European Tour - Maybank Malaysian Open
Very much an anticlimax wasn't it pd! First ET Sunday I've watched for a while, and not really worth getting up for, nobody ever looked like making a charge and Louis certainly never looked like falling back into the pack. Pleased for him though, he seems to have stepped his game up another gear this year, certainly more majors in him if he stays at this level. Very impressive.
Any thoughts on OWGR points yet? I was hoping RCB might sneak the win this morning to get a top 50 spot, but he and Matteo at least picked up a few points I guess.

Also (with thanks to Benn Barham on twitter for pointing it out) what on earth happened to Garrido today? 4 pars, 1 eagle in his first 5 holes... then 9 bogeys, 3 doubles and a quadruple for his last 13?!?

Re: European Tour - Maybank Malaysian Open
Agree Ned. It was just nice to watch Oosty winning it, but apart from him, the last couple of hours it looked more like a struggle for 2nd and 3rd places, more a case of who's making less mistakes not to lose these spots rather then winning them... I posted a brief owgr update on the other thread...

Wozniacki Tennis Academy is partner in the WTA tournament Eboks Open. The Management company behind Caroline is also a partner in the tournament, so it's almost her own tournament. But not in the same way as Tiger's Chevron.
Rory did not show up yesterday and had no apologies, so my wife got the honour, but she also, hits a golf ball very well

A bit late but I read that S Gallagher signed for the wrong score after the third round but still finished 2nd. I though a wrong score meant you were disqualified?
Anyone know what happened and what the ruling is?

Caito,
he made a birdie three on one of the back nine holes, but signed for a four. No DQ for that, cos he signed for a higher than correct score, but he had to take the score he'd signed for. Basically cost himself a shot.

if you sign for the wrong higher score you take the higher score.
if you sign for the wrong score that is lower you are DQ'd
Donalds recent problem was a smudge on a 5 to make it look like a 3

Don't want to tread on anyone's toes by starting a new thread, but just glanced at the early stages of the China leaderboard. Great start for the local player Tai Fu, 4 under thru 5. Wonder if China also has players called Tet Lee or Piji Tipz?
