OWGR - Week #21
Congratulations to Luke Donald and Zach Johnson winners of the BMW PGA Championship and the Colonial, respectively! It's been exactly one year since Luke became #1 in the world for the very first time and his fantastic win this week brings him back to #1 for the 4th time, having now a healthy lead of more than one point over Rory McIlroy. Justin Rose and Paul Lawrie shared the 2nd spot, which means they both move to new carreer best ranking positions: Rose to #6 and Lawrie to #29. Zach Johnson climbs to #17, while Jason Dufner, runner up at the Colonial, continues his highly impressive march up the rankings entering now the 'creme de la creme' top 10 at #8!
Well done also to Hiroyuki Fujita, winner of the Diamond Cup in Japan! It's his second win this season and he climbs to #64, just ahead of Ryo Ishikawa, becoming now the highest ranked Japanese player. A similar achievement also for the runner up in Japan, Kiradech Aphibarnrat from Thailand, who should move up around the top 150 in the world, becoming the highest ranked Asian player outside Korea and Japan. Finally, the Italian Marco Crespi wins the Telenet Trophy in Brussels on the Challenge Tour and that should bring him up somewhere just inside the top 500...
The OWGR table after week #21 should look as follows:
1 Luke Donald
2 Rory McIlroy
3 Lee Westwood
4 Bubba Watson
5 Matt Kuchar
6 Justin Rose
7 Hunter Mahan
8 Jason Dufner

Re: OWGR - Week #21
Lots of good stories this week. One of my favourites (apart from Roger Chapman!) is that of Richard Sterne who must climb about 300 spots, to around 310-ish, perhaps higher.
Incredible run by Jason Dufner - he's taking a couple of weeks off before the Olympic. Bubba, Dustin and Fatty Marino back at Jack's place this week.
Thanks pd

Re: OWGR - Week #21
Thanks, kwini.
Indeed, some great stories out there, didn't have time to look in detail last night... Sterne is up to #319, but to me, probably the most amazing one is the performance of 40-year old Cork-man David Higgins who finished with an unbelievable T10 at the strongest ET event! He wasn't ranked prior to this (all he could show for this season were a couple of MCs on the CT) but now he's up to #651...

Re: OWGR - Week #21
The early count for this week reveals a huge imbalance between ET's and PGAT's events...
- Wales Open @ 26-28 pts (down from 30 pts last year)
- Memorial @ 68-70 pts (up from 62 pts last year)
A rough estimate suggests Luke needs a top 14 or so to keep his #1 position (in case Rory wins). No one from outside top 3 could reach 3rd place...

Re: OWGR - Week #21
Pathetic by English golfers to bemoan lack of tournaments in England yet not play 15 miles over the border at Celtic Manor.
Much better turn out by Continentals than British golfers, Paul Lawrie excepted.
Grace, Rock and Kruger confirmed in the US Open field for Olympic Club.
PS: Was it just a space (on the tee, on the fairways, on the green) issue that caused Shane Lowry to have to go out as a singleton at Walton Heath this morning?

Re: OWGR - Week #21
No idea what was the story with Lowry, but he didn't seem to enjoy too much the loneliness... I see good names in contention after the 1st round (incl. Monty and Ollie) but some good ones near the bottom as well (Eddi Molinari and Richie Ramsay for example)... No word of any 2nd round results so far...

Lowry is basically two people anyway.

Re: OWGR - Week #21
I wonder if Lowry was supposed to go out as a two some and the player he was paired with was a late WD?
I was thinking it might have Brandon Grace who probably is in the US open by the second top 60 deadline by virtue of his high finish yesterday.
But he is qualifying in Ohio next week (if he qualifies).

Re: OWGR - Week #21
Grace is already confirmed as in the US Open field so, yes, it may be him who Lowry was originally paired with. Or Kruger perhaps?
(s_r - I think that's what I was getting at . . . . . )
Casey out of Memorial. I'm beginning to fear for his career.

Lowry is so fat he needs to qualify in TWO categories before he gets into the US Open.

kwini, are you saying that Grace and Kruger are already qualified? How...?kwinigolfer wrote:Grace is already confirmed as in the US Open field so, yes, it may be him who Lowry was originally paired with. Or Kruger perhaps?

Re: OWGR - Week #21
Grace, Rock and Kruger are qualified by virtue (apparently) of being the three highest placed golfers in the R2D not otherwise qualified, as at today.
Not sure I recall that from the qualifying criteria, but they're definitely in!

It is not in the US Open application form: (unless I am missing something)

Re: OWGR - Week #21
Yup, Definitely The Open and not the US Open - states that quite clearly on pgatour.com which does a good job of being the reference bible for such things. Sorry about that, should've double checked.
No wonder I was surprised. Too bad for Jbe Kruger.

Re: OWGR - Week #21
So Rory's to play Memphis as well...
In Heathrow about to go to the US. Excited about the next 3 weeks! Memorial, Memphis and then defend the US Open in San Fran. #backtowork
I see... so, he never considered Sawgrass and Wentworth as 'work' then...

That's a change to his plan and pre major routine! Tbh he needed to do something different soon. Seems to run in and out of form like Mickelson from the past few years.

Probably won't affect the Memorial owgr points available but O'Hair and Yang have joined Casey on the sidelines this week.

Thanks, kwini, well, it means that the 70 pts is now virtually out of question, but should be well inside the 68 pts range... Any sign who has replaced those 5 guys listed now on the pgatour.com site as w/d's ?

Re: OWGR - Week #21
Mathis, Summerhays, Baird, Couch, Flores (who's making increasingly frequent appearances on leaderboards; looks a player destined to have a win in him - not this week though).
Edit: Now Baird is out injured, so Will Claxton replaces the Briny one.

Re: OWGR - Week #21
Final count for this week:
- Memorial @ 68pts
Luke needs solo 13th or better if Rory wins to stay #1 (winning is the only way Rory could get back to #1)
- Wales @ 28pts
Van Zyl must've read one of my earlier posts here, he's having a good go at the top of the LB today... (could reach top 60 with win)
- Japan @ 16pts
Fujita can get inside top 60 with another win and could celebrate his 43rd birthday in style on June 16th in San Francisco... currently 3rd in Japan, but KtK seems to have remembered that he could be a formidable player, with a 64 today, currently 2nd...
