America is the only Super Power in the world now, what makes it great?

Or is it really so great when so many people over there live in poverty while other have more money than they can spend?

Is it not because it has the largest free market in the world?

This situation exists in every country in the world to some extent, not just the US.
What makes the USA great? The vastness of the country, the huge population, the diversity of it's people, the fact they put the english in their place during the revolutionary war Wink , their contribution to making the modern world with various inventions etc, they put a man on the moon, the modern music genres (blues, rock, jazz, r&b etc) evolved there, great movies, a rich and interesting history, the NFL, Bob Dylan and the fact that, as someone has already pointed out, beiber is in fact Canadian.

Oh, and some people over there (George Bush, sarah palin etc) have provided the rest of the world with some real comedic entertainment.

I thought the Scots (and Welsh/Irish) liked to brag that it was mostly their men who provided the feet on the ground for the British army - so maybe they should get the blame for being put in our place

Gaelic-Warrior wrote:the modern music genres (blues, rock, jazz, r&b etc) evolved there,
The British had a bigger influence on modern rock music (the British invasion of US in the 60s) - Beatles, Stones etc. Though most of my favourite rock bands now happens to be North American (including Canada), not many of them would have existed without the British influence of the 60s. Even Hendrix, though American by birth, bloomed in the UK

"I thought the Scots (and Welsh/Irish) liked to brag that it was mostly their men who provided the feet on the ground for the British army - so maybe they should get the blame for being put in our place"

Hah, I knew I'd get a bite from that one! laughing
Seriously though, the British army at the time had a lot of English in it too, especially officers. There was also a mix of non-UK and non-US on both sides. The British hired thousands of German mercs and american loyaists also fought for them. Washington's army also had Irish, Scots, Welsh and even English immigrants in it too.

As for music, the British invasion could not have happened without US influence beforehand, modern rock music can be traced right back to the blues, which was developed where? By African/ African-American slaves in the US, and in the late 40's and in the 50's rock'n'roll was taken from blues. The musical influences on the Beatles and the stones were mostly US- Elvis, fats domino & blues musicians. The Beatles took US music and made it their own. As for Bob Dylan, I've not came across anyone who is better than him lyrically. He completely redifined how songs were written, even the Beatles were influenced by him- songs like norwegian wood etc have a dylanesque style to them. The UK has had a massive impact on modern rock music, no doubt about that, but not as big as the US. Why do you think Dylan's first album of 1965 was called "Bringing it all back home", hint- he's reffering to the music/british invasion and the key word is HOME (ie-USA). Electric guitar is also a US invention.

What make's America Great?
GEORGE BUSH.

The 'misunderestimated' president?

All politicians are prone to make slips of the tongue in the heat of the moment - and President George W Bush has made more than most.

The word "Bushism" has been coined to label his occasional verbal lapses during eight years in office, which come to an end on 20 January.

Here are some of his most memorable pronouncements.

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we".
Washington DC, 5 August, 2004

"I think war is a dangerous place".
Washington DC, 7 May, 2003

"The ambassador and the general were briefing me on the - the vast majority of Iraqis want to live in a peaceful, free world. And we will find these people and we will bring them to justice".
Washington DC, 27 October, 2003

"Free societies are hopeful societies. And free societies will be allies against these hateful few who have no conscience, who kill at the whim of a hat".
Washington DC, 17 September, 2004

"You know, one of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the war on terror".
CBS News, Washington DC, 6 September, 2006

They do have that hockey-mum that ran as John McCain's vice-president in the last election. Her 2009 autobiography "Going Rogue" and 2010 autobiography "America By Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith and Flag" seem to be as popular as the current incumbents autobiography "Dreams from my Father" (1995). I am sure that with the decline in popularity of Obama and the rise of The Tea Party Movement she should have a reasonable chance in 2012 or perhaps 2016.

It's amazing how stereotyped some of the responses are - makes me wonder whether these people get all their information from tabloids.

It always strikes me as odd that the US political scene is so polarised at present when there is relatively little difference in policy application between the Democrats and Republicans, at least when compared with the European political spectrum.

Yes, there is a huge disparity between the wealthiest and the poorest, but the average American is better off than the average Briton (not least because property over there is much more affordable).

Having been over there several times, I have rarely met an American who was not friendly and helpful, although there are a few places it is better to steer clear of.

The absolute best places I've ever been are in the western half of the US - The Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. So far beyond mind-blowing that you need a new vocabulary.

Been all over the US. East, West, Mid-West, Deep South, Bible-belt. And you are right. Warm, helpful, friendly people everywhere you go. And some of the most stunning scenery on Earth.

Its just their dumbed-down, anti-culture, I have a problem with. It is spreading and is now the "norm" in most European countries.

I love America. For lots of reasons. But that's not one of them. It's not their fault - it's ours.

It's a funny thing isn't it - the difference between Americans as individual people and as a culture. It's as though if you put more than a couple of dozen of them together, their brains all turn to mush...

Then again, look a bit closer to home. We aren't as nice individually and are just as stupid en mass.

Oh, and for all the criticism that comes the way of George W Bush, anyone who comes out with the brilliant new word 'misunderestimate' can't be all bad...

Oh, and for all the criticism that comes the way of George W Bush, anyone who comes out with the brilliant new word 'misunderestimate' can't be all bad...

No argument there dummy_half. I dont get much British or Irish TV over here (Except the BEEB), but when I go home for a game - I cant believe the level of shoite I see on Irish and British commercial TV. It's what the punters want, so fair enough. The Clogs created Big Brother. Nuff said.

Another thing I love about the States, is the way they actively back up the freedom of having a business-idea and how they encourage that ability to set up a business and go for it. Not so easy in Europe, with all the red-tape and negative attitudes to the same thing.
That rocks. I love that US get up and go attitude. Ah here, we'll be giving them even bigger hids than they have now. Wink

what makes America great?

The size of the country is the main reason imo. There's more money for things like tv and sport due to the potentially huge audience over there.

Having a bigger pool of talent than everyone else also helps

What I love about America is that the cities have such unique cultures to them, the diversity of the European settlers creating their own little part on the new continent that then itself evolved over time to create places like New Orleans, San Francisco, Boston, New York, Pittsburgh etc.
