Or does he? Given the past record of anyone decent in Wilder's opponents list failing a drugs test (Ortiz, Povetkin, and to a lesser extent Wawrzyck) it would not surprise me if this didn't go ahead.

That said, it'll be interesting to see how Wilder deals with someone who can genuinely punch a bit. I am not sure on Ortiz. He puts opponents away with ease but he's never really been tested either, and he doesn't exactly look like an athlete. And his age can't exactly be helping. Still, I reckon he's better than most give him credit. I think he's good enough to avoid Wilder's wild swinging technique and could provide us with a new WBC champ - if they ever fight. Ortiz TKO 7.

I remember people kept banging on and on about what a great HW division this is. The talent pool is so shallow, you can basically keep failing drug tests, but as long as you're a 'name' in the division, you will avoid bans.

As for Ortiz, against Malik Scott he was awful, and against Dave Allen he was awful. 38 now, so Wilder should put him away. If he doesn't, then the division is in worse shape than even I thought.

I do think though that this will be the first time that Wilder has faced someone with a bit of talent and no fear who can actually punch a bit. I would like to see Wilder actually take a big shot and come back from it. There is some kind of aura surrounding Wilder and I am not sure why. He's got big power, sure, but he's incredibly crude, has dreadful movement and those long spindly legs will not help him once he gets tagged heavily.

It's the easiest thing in the world to pull apart someone's record (I am now about to do it!!), but if we have a look at Wilder's list since first fighting for the WBC title, he's outpointed Stiverne (not that highly rated at the time), took 9 rounds to finally get Molina out of there, fought a nobody in Duhaupas, then had a bit of trouble figuring Szpilka out before landing a cracking (wild) shot that poleaxed him. His only other opponent in WBC terms has been the past his best Arreola who was beaten twice by Stiverne before Bermane took on Wilder - and he was outclassed then. Plus the uninterested Stiverne rematch - we won't discuss that waste of space! (Oh, sorry - I forgot about Gerald Washington. But then, just about everyone else has too). There aren't many names on Wilder's record. It's also strange how he has managed to avoid the dangerous Povetkin. I know one should always believe in the mistake rather than the conspiracy but to me, it stinks a bit. Credit to him for facing Ortiz next, but there's question marks over his abilities to actually make it to the fight.

I want to see what happens when he gets hit. I want to see what heart he's got. Granted he's got power and he's exciting, but I really don't think he's all that. He's been carefully managed and was in the right place at the right time. Bombing out the lower levels of the HW division doesn't really count. I want to see him in a proper fight. So let's stop the love-in for Deontay a bit until he's had a fight of the type that Joshua and Klitschko served up last summer.
