Willie Thorne uses the word "should" far too much for someone who never won anything

Ronnie played the percentage shot there and it looks like it has won him the frame. 10-7 (if it is) I see no way back for Bazza I am afraid.

As I remember it when he was at his peak in terms of success the players he beat were also grinders. Steve's main attribute/skill was that he would make a 30/40 then when he got out of position play safe, force a mistake from his opponent and then make another 30/40. His break building was far superior to that of his opponents in those days and he cut out the mistakes that the lesser players were want to make.

It was only once the better potters came onto the scene such as Hendry, Doherty, to a lesser extent Foulds maybe and later Williams that Steve became an out and out grinder.

A very fair assessment.

Steve Davis biggest strengths when he was at his peak in the 1980's were not only his excellent levels of safety and tactical play, but he also had a very good consistent control of the cueball. His potting whilst very good was actually a bit overrated as he did miss very easy pots during critical moments of a match. What let Davis down eventually at the start of the 1990's was that he lost his ability to make long to mid range pots.
