Attention Mac users - MacProtector malware

Post by Schrodinger's Cat on Sun 08 May 2011, 1:14 pm

Just had a new "app", which is in fact malware, called MacProtector automatically install. It can also go under names such as MacDefender or something similar. It pretends to be anti-virus software which has detected viruses. It asks you to register to clean-up the computer. Do not register if it installs and do not install if you can avoid it. The most common place for it to be downloaded from is Google Images. It is relatively easy to remove, as it only seems to be concerned with getting credit card details. You can help to protect yourself by going to Safari>Preferences and unselecting 'Open "safe" files after downloading'.
