I know this cycling section is not the most well used and that one of the moderators has already put up a news report of Wouter Weylandt's tragic accident yesterday but I wanted to put up a personal message about yesterday's terrible news.

As a long-time Quickstep fan I have followed Wouter's career for many years and was extremely excited when he turned pro following some incredibly impressive junior results. As was to be expected on a team as strong as Quickstep's he rapidly fell into the role of a super-domestique for the sprinters and classics specialists. That being said in the past few years he had started to show himself in his own right none more so than this time last year when he won stage 3 of the Giro d'Italia. Although not faced with many of the top sprinters he had managed to be in the right place at the right time to avoid the stage defining crash, a skill in it's own right in this sport. The same stage a year on proved to be his last.

The news yesterday hit me really hard, although I saw him race I never met Wouter but I was still left with an enormous sense of loss. 26 years old is far too young.

Sport often gives us enormous pleasure, yesterday it took back far too much.

RIP Wouter.

such a shame when these things happen i remember watching the tour de france a couple years back when guy went over a barrier and had to very careful climb back up the side of a mountain.

nando - I'm very glad I haven't seen it, it sounds awful.

I know Geraint Thomas was involved in an accident about a year ago where he went crashing over the side of a road and fell quite a way, and smashed his face up quite badly. I remember at the time thinking he was incredibly lucky it wasn't anything more serious.

Yesterday was a tragic accident that just serves as a reminder as to how dangerous cycling can be. Just very sad Sad

it was the worst thing ive ever witnessed on live tv , rd,

cycling is a very dangerous sport especially when your coming down mountains at ridiculous speeds.

i think may be time for the uci to start looking at ways can make cycling safer.
