Films you like which nobody else seems to have heard of - Page 2 Empty Films you like which nobody else seems to have heard of

Post by bhb001 Sun 07 Jul 2013, 11:43 pm

First topic message reminder :

This has probably been done before, but has anyone got an example of a little known film which is never discussed but you think is brilliant?

For me, it is the Ninth Configuration; written and directed by William Peter Blattey, who wrote the Exorcist. Lot's of good character actors in it and with wonderful quotable lines. I must have watched it 30 times over a couple of years back in the late 80s and have only ever seen it referred to once in an article. It probably doesn't date well, but still worth a couple of hours of anyone's time.

Any other examples?

I enjoyed Into The Wild as well but Chris McCandless has to be one of the thickest people ever to have warranted a biographical film.  Dumb and Dumber could just as easily have been about him.

I like the film, but yes, it was ultimately a story about someone committing a very long accidental suicide!

Brilliant Norwegian film about a dystopian future.

Just "found" it. That was weird even by my standards (and I liked Tetsuo). Great acting throughout, so low key it was brilliant!! Cheers Cyril for putting me on to that one.

I know this one is too well known for this thread, but I kept thinking of Leningrad Cowboys go America while watching this. Totally different type of film, but I suppose it was the minimalist approach that resonates.

I've seen that. Amazing film with a lovely soundtrack too if I remember rightly. The book by Jon Krakauer on which the film is based about Christopher McCandless (the dude who lived in the wilderness) is very good too.

Let it ride - a film about a hopeless gambler (Richard Dreyfuss) who has a day at the track where he cant lose.

Awful film but makes me smile every time (I think it was called Hot to Trot in America)

To be fair to McCandless, he would've done all right had he not eaten the wrong thing which is the sort of mistake even the most experienced explorer could make.  His journey wasn't as careless as it seemed.  He was a strong willed individual and actually very fit having been a cross country runner since adolescence. Although he was brought up in a middle-upper class home, he wanted to reject what he saw as the empty materialism of society, hence he embarked on the journey living simplistically in the open.

Sounds a bit like the plot from a Bilko episode where it was his day and he couldn't lose. This is where it will differ. He only realised it a couple of minutes before the end of the day so never got to capitalise on it.

I remember that epsiode - they tried to bet on a race where the day hadnt yet ended due to time zones. As the race went on the horse was leading but as it turned midnight, it started falling back.

Bilko was awesome.

I like the bit were Dreyfuss is trying to select his pick so he asks everyone else who they are backing and then goes for the horse no-one else picked . It is usually my method of betting and is why i'm no good at it !

21 Grams, Brick, Babel, Manic, Boy A and Wristcutters: A Love Story are all films that I've picked up recently that don't seem to be that well known. All pretty decent!

Vampire's Kiss - An early Nicolas Cage film about a man who thinks he's turning into a vampire. Extraordinary performance from Cage and a very sexy lady vampire Jennifer Beals.

Gleaming the cube was class, had a really young Tony Hawks in it too Smile

Quite liked from the same era, "the wizard of speed and Time"

I also quite like "waterworld" unlike the rest of humanity apparently

I don't think many people have seen much of his early stuff. Raising Arizona is another stand out performance from Cage. He's a fine actor. Leaving Las Vegas another example.

I've mentioned this in another thread but "Citizen X" is a very good film that nobody has heard of.

It's a made-for-TV film about Soviet serial killer Andrei Chikatilo who raped, murdered and mutilated 53 young men, women and children.

He was a deeply disturbed individual, who could only reach full sexual satisfaction by stabbing his victims while he raped them (that part's not in the film) and he would stab out their eyes as he thought that the last thing they saw before they died was permanently imprinted on them (that bit is in the film).

He's brilliantly brought to life by Jeffrey DeMunn. You almost end up felling sorry for him in the end.

"SEEMS to have heard of...." the clue's is in there if you look hard enough.

Nice of your wife to go by the non de plume of Debbie as I suppose "Celia Imrie look-a-like does Didsbury (with a frown on her face as she can't stop think what a pig her husband is)" would be a tough sell.

Don't think he was overly good in Raising Arizona - was a brilliant script and the fact he played a bit of an imbecile that saved him. The scene when he gets back to the car without a baby exposes his lack of ability.

"The Salton Sea" with Val Kilmer. People tend to be put off when I start with the opening line "Val Kilmer player a jazz trumpet player" However whilst it's (sort of) relevant it's not essential to the plot. Anyway, give it a whirl. Mate of mine recommended it years ago and I caught it on Sky Movies. Really enjoyable (at least I thought so)

Beautiful Girls - amazing cast and a great film where nothing really happens (sounds like the premise for Seinfeld!).

Just an amazing movie.

I dont know whether pleasantville falls in this. Certainly none of my mates have heard of it but I think its brilliant and Jeff Daniels is quality in it

Loved the film back in the day, which may or may not have something to do with my disturbing Winona Ryder obsession, don't think it really holds up to repeat viewings but it is a step above the recent flurry of quirky teen movies.
