First topic message reminder :

So, a decider at Cape Town where, I gather, big crowds are expected. The only bad thing about this match is that it's the last in the series. This really would have made for a great 5-Test series.

Difficult to call this one. SA did wonderfully to come back at PE after the drubbing in the 1st Test. Much will depend on who bats first. Could be that the team that bats first will win the match. Interesting sidebar is the form of Clarke, who (I think) has not passed 24 in the last five tests. Until PE, they were winning without his contributions, but he may well be needed in Cape Town.

Who am I going for? Almost too close to call. Who are you going for?

South Africa:

If South Africa didn't realise how big a void there is without Kallis bowling, they know now...they badly needed his control here...innings rate hasn;t dropped below 3.5 at all. Also the fact that Elgar has bowled 22 overs shows they miss him as well!

Australia declared their innings closed at 494-7. South Africa lost Smith early to Ryan Harris, and Dean Elgar who came in at 3 also couldn't make much of an impact before he was done in by a combination of a fine delivery from Pattinson that was brilliantly held by Haddin. Alviro Petersen took the bowling on and made a brisk half-century before he gloved a short ball from Johnson. Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers at the crease now, SA 111-3.
Other than Ryan Harris and Johnson, all the bowlers going for a few. Pattinson at 8 an over from his 4, Lyon and Watson also expensive so far.

South Africans have been going after the Australian first innings score very aggressively, but with 4 down a fair way away, they are in some trouble. Another wicket here, Australia will be contemplating bowling them out for under 250.

Brisk scoring...but four down in the session. Hard to see SA getting out of this with a draw unless weather intervenes. I know they have a great record of battling back to save matches ; but there is a lot of time left in this one and they are a long way behind...

Harris is the most dangerous bowler in the world......he takes the pitch out of the equation....or rather he has a variety to utilize every pitch.......reverse on direr pitches.......conventional seam movement on green pitches...and bounce when the pitch so assits....

and he is so skiddy off the pitch at a lively pace ranging between 85-89mph.......only Marshal was skidier.....

and an average of 22ish with a SR of 48 balls /wkt sustained over nearly 100 test wickets.....makes him in the bracket of the very best fast bowlers in the history of game.

Aus in total control and could have had Faf too but did not review.

Appalled at the over rate, when will something be done about it ?  Way too many overs are being lost to the paying public.

This would be a nice bit of closure.

Last time South Africa lost a Test series it was five years ago. At home. To Australia. By the margin of 2-1.

Symmetery. If Australia can close it out.

So ; will Clarke enforce the follow on ? None of the bowlers have done too much work so far , so if the tail doesn't delay them too long it might be worth it...

Must confess I am a little surprised to see SA crumbling so quickly ... credit to the bowlers of course : they have kept the pressure up well ; but this batting lineup has been pretty tough to knock over the last few years. They don't half miss Kallis , even if his recent figures hadn't been outstanding he was a massive presence. And the fact that Smith can't buy a run has hurt them.
Given their proud record , I am not ruling out a huge second innings come back . But you wouldn't be putting money on it...

Clarke normally does not, but if the innings ends fairly soon, might he enforce the follow-on this time.

G.Smith having had a stinker of a series and the bowlers still pretty fresh.

Watson bowls Abbot. 249/8.

Steyn is having a bat.

Clarke will probably bat again now. Too many overs were bowled and less time for Steyn to recover.

Quite painful watching him having to run that 3.

Australia will bat again against a compromised bowling attack, try to score quickly and avoid batting last on the "Day 6/7" pitch on Day 4/5.

...but looks as though SA will get past 294.

Nasty blow to the helmet of Steyn trying to duck a Mitch fireball.

My obseravtions earlier stand.....

--smith (the capt of SA) is running out of fire in the belly atleast on a sustained game-after-game basis

--In this Aussie team....we are seeing the gelling together one of the finest pace attacks since the WI of 1980s and SA since their return....and with some depth.

--we are seeing the gelling together of Aus into the top test match side....... after Eng's " self-satisfied regression to mediocrity"....and  SA's "leadership without hunger" has caught up with them.

--Aus's chinks in the armoury are an aged opener in Rogers....and equally old Haddin..they probably will have Marsh replacing the former.....need immediately to find a replacement for Haddin

Take them out, what is left?

That's the problem.

You only mentioned one batsman, and not their best. And "leadership without hunger". Sorry, SA have that in abundance, they have not lost a series for five years and may still not lose here.

But agree with the ageing side regarding Haddin, MJ, Rogers and Clarke. Will it last long?

But his team has performed miracle escapes recently to keep their unbeaten run. Do you think he has seen the future without Kallis or he wants more time with his family.

as I was sensing........Smith had no more left to motivate him.

cricketers are like cars......you judge them not so  much by "year of make" but rather......the mileage on them.
Smith has clocked a lot of mileage as a captain..since the age of 22...that's 11 years as a captain....seen all, done all...many times over

Swann made his decision to call it a day because his hunger had gone after the series was lost. Still can't help feeling Smith's timing was ill-timed to the detriment of his team.

Time will tell.

... and you can probably add Trott, Prior, Kallis (too scared to even face up - he knows what Smith knows but at least Graeme had the balls to give it one last shot), Root (cotton-wooled v Aus), Tremlett, Finn (not worth the risk). Quite a substantial list of players falling by the wayside there. The last few are obviously not in the same class of KP, Kallis, etc... but are casualties nonetheless.

Common denominator?  Terror (sic) Australis.
Well, I don't think the current India, Pakistan, NZ and WI line-ups could wreak so much havoc to both England and SA in under 3 months.

Hats off to our players. clap clap
An almost perfect summer... now only a few brilliant early autumn days to go.

We are lucky to have such a thoroughly ruthless and dedicated group. Obviously a lot hungrier than England were and more than SA are this series.
Of course they had to feel the pain themselves but thankfully this bunch of players under Darren Lehmann is now starting to bear some fruit.

I'll now sit back and quietly wait for alfie to douse my enthusiasm - not that I particularly agree with many of his current views anyway.  Wink
Just balancing the ledger of commentary on here. KP_f is pretty much spot on and I agree 100% with his very accurate reading of events.

I must admit, some sought of an apology is needed from me.

To come back from a 3-0 reverse and to win 5-0 against all expectations other than from an Australian prospective and to then as seems likely be the first team in five years to beat South Africa, the No 1 ranked team is one hell of an achievement.

Guess i just don't like the thought of the REAL old enemy doing so well again.

But great cricket is great for cricket, so well done Australia.

Poor Rogers...gets run out half the times.......he can't afford to have his career averages affected by run outs.

Warner.....will he get a hundred in each inning ?

I agree Gerry. Lehman and Clarke looked very heated.

Why tell Warner to slow down. Feck the carrot.

If your bowlers don't do it, so be it.

Looks like Lehman has his way. Speeding it up again.

Was not used to seeing Warner padding away 40 balls on the bounce.

Feck, Warner must be nearly averaging 100 in this series.
