Edith Cavell Empty Edith Cavell

Post by Corporalhumblebucket on Sat 22 Mar 2014, 10:16 pm

I'm supporting to the petition to have face of Edith Cavell, the nurse executed in WW1 for helping soliders, on the £2 coin.  If you are interested the link is below:

https://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/the-british-treasury-issue-a-2-coin-with-the-face-of-edith-cavell-on-it

At the moment the Treasury propose to have a picture of the War Minister, Lord Kitchener, on the coin.  I think it would be more fitting to have Edith Cavell - either instead or as well as the jingoistic figure of Lord Kitchener.  Edith Cavell was executed for giving succour to all wounded soldiers regardless of nationality. The woman is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers in Brussels from all sides without distinction. She and Belgian and French colleagues helped over 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium. She was arrested, tried with 33 others by a German military court, found guilty of ‘assisting men to the enemy’ and shot by a German firing squad on October 12 1915.

"I realise that patriotism is not enough, I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone", were her last words. She did not want to be remembered as a martyr or a heroine but simply as "a nurse who tried to do her duty". In the year in which we commemorate the First World War she should be honoured by her country as a woman who was one of the best.

My vote as well.

Didn't Kitchener invent or expand the use of concentration camps?

Went to Rye in Sussex last year. On the way we stopped at Bodium where there is an old steamline. There is also a museum in some disused carriages dedicated to Edith Cavell and the Unknown warrior. The carriages at Bodium and many other of the same design on the Kent and East Sussex line were called Cavell Vans in her memory.

If Edith isn't to every taste then how about The Father of antiseptic surgery Joseph Lister..

Saved hundreds of thousands of lives by realising infection is the surgeons biggest enemy and that by keeping instruments and wounds clean with antiseptic a higher rate of survival is assured..

Too late for President Garfield who's Surgeons thought Lister was nuts !!!

Edith Cavell has a permanent memorial (of sorts) as there is a hospital named after her...well, a branch of the Peterborough City Hospital anyway:

Still, I've no problem with her being on a coin as well. Good luck with the petition.

She did her work to help fellow humans and not for any 1 side, policy, or ideology.

Special person and a special legacy....

but I cannot support your cause to have her face on the £2 coin.

No problems. Petition currently just a tad short of 80,000 at the moment.

Petition signed.  Thanks for the link.

Cavell was indeed a remarkable woman.  She realised that men wounded in combat are human beings who need help and compassion regardless of whose side they are on.

Funny, isn't it........  I served in the Falklands in 1982 and remember how our (unarmed) medics in the field gave aid to wounded Argentinian soldiers and yet now, in Afghanistan, our medical corpsmen carry weapons.  And use them.  Whatever happened to the Hippocratic Oath..?

Another thing while I'm about it.   I notice that certain members of the pro hanging lobby from the thread currently running on the restoration of the death penalty, are conspicuous by their absence in this discussion about recognising a great woman who saved lives rather than ended them.  Perhaps they would rather have Kitchener on the coin.   He was all for a good old execution before breakfast.  There's nothing like a firing squad to start the day with.  Gets the appetite going, dontcha know.

Yep.... that's the sort of person that Britain in 2014 likes to commemorate.

He did expand their usage yes, over 20,000 children died in his camps during the Boer war. They did though already exist, the term came to use by the Spanish military in Cuba, and although they weren't termed concentration camps the Russians were rounding up Polish in the 18th century.

Dan Jarvis MP Parliamentary question to George Osborne:

Next year will mark 100 years since the execution of Edith Cavell, the brave nurse who saved countless lives during WW1....Will the Chancellor join me and 110,000 people who have signed an online petition and urge the Royal Mint to mark the anniversary by including Edith Cavell on its lists of designs for the new £2 coin, so that we can honour all those who served and made scrificies for our country in different ways a century ago?

George Osborne:

As well as being Chancellor of the Exchequer I am Master of the Royal Mint. I can therefore address the ...question directly. ......Like previous Govts, we act on the advice of a Royal Mint advisory committee on these topics, but I will directly take up with it the suggestion of marking Edith Cavell's sacrifice and make sure that it is honoured in an appropriate way.

Sounds promising.... thumbsup
