Billings last year, and year before, also opened for Kent..so he can do multiple roles, which can only help his case..

Yorkshire in a good position in the Roses match. 200 odd behind but with 10 wickets still remaining on a good batting wicket. Lancashire threw away a lot of their wickets yesterday and Yorkshire didn't bowl particularly well aside from Sidebottom and then Rashid late on.

Notts are stuggling with 4 down for 66, with slightly less than 200 to go to match Durham's first innings score. Injuries and England call-ups have exposed Notts a bit.

Adam Lyth with his 5th century of the season putting him over 160 runs ahead of anyone else in the country has Yorkshire leading by 50 runs with 5 wickets remaining in their 1st innings.

Notts crumpled to 188ao this morning but have reduced Durham to 90/5 which is effectively 150/5. Close match that one.

Warks/Midd has seen no play today. Inspection at 5pm though.

Could be a good couple of days for current CC leaders Yorks. They're in a strong position in the Roses match at Old Trafford, leading by 118 with 5 first-innings wickets in hand from end of day 2. Strongly fancy them to defeat Lancs tomorrow.

Meanwhile, second placed Notts are up against it away at Durham. That match is already well advanced and could even finish today. At the end of day 2 last night, Durham were leading by 261 with three 2nd-innings wickets in hand. Not a massive total but it's never a cakewalk getting runs at Durham. Furthermore, Notts will need to score the highest innings total of the match batting last - that's never easy either. 70-30 in Durham's favour imo.

So Notts must chase 372. Colly got himself to 100 before being bowled by formeer Yorkie and england seamer Shazhad. Been done plenty of times at County cricket level but can't be too often at Durham.

Yorks heading towards a 300 lead against Lancashire and are in a strong position for a first Roses win in the CC in 12 years. Haven't lost a wicket today. Lyth over 250 now and Rashid with his 2nd ton of the year to go with his 3 wickets on Sunday.

So Notts made a valient attempt at chasing 370 but missed out by 50 runs. Not good for their championship hopes.

They'll be hoping Lanns can hold on in the Roses battle. They are currently 83 behind with 4 2nd innings wickets in hand. Gonna be close.

Warks are gonna have to make-do with a draw against Middlesex which could see them 32 points behind after today.

Yorkshire wrap up victory pretty quickly. Rashid ends with 5-116 to go with his 150 and Lyth takes the final wicket to give Yorkshire an innings victory. First Roses victory in 12 years takes them 26 points clear.

Notts vs Yorkshire next week...

Andrew Gayle has been banned for the final two games of the season following a confrontation at the end of day one involving Ashwell Prince. The umpires heard everything he said apparently had made a complaint.

Gale can have no compliants really. He knew the next time he stepped out of line he'd be punished and so he has, rightfully so. And unfortunately no camera hokery or England cap could save his bacon here either.

The good thing to come out of it for Yorkshire though is they now don't have to worry about dropping Gale for the next game. With Root and Ballance to come into the team it would have been very likely that Gale would have dropped himself anyway.

The English thinking is so far behind in ODIs it's unreal.

As it is Billings played a decent knock, but didn't dare really express himself until the last couple of overs (where he took 20odd runs).

Billings at 8... I can only shudder.

Kent finished at least 60 runs below par BTW. I was astonished at the number of full tosses which they seemed content to hit for a single - the full toss should go for 6 nowadays...

Warwickshire have also made a cautious start. Against Stevens and Claydon on an even paced wicket. sigh..

Sad to wake up to the news Kyle Hogg has had to retire due to injury. A very underrated cricketer who has given 14 years to Lancs.

Hampo - sorry to hear that news about Kyle Hogg. I didn't realise he had been with Lancs so long. His family have certainly given service to the county. I remember his dad Willie Hogg who was a pace bowler in the late '70s and into the '80s. More oddly perhaps, his maternal granddad was West Indian spin maestro Sonny Ramadhin who also played for Lancs and, I believe, still lives in the county now.

Century number 6 for Adam Lyth. 300 runs more than anyone else. Handy 80s from Lees and Ballance too. Yorks close on 319/4 vs Notts.

Meanwhile Warks are 200odd behind Northants 1st innings score with 9 wickets left.

Looking increasingly good for Yorkshire - eventually declared on 532 with Bresnan getting out for 95 (rather slowly), and then reducing Notts to 25-4 early on. Still only day 2 and with the weather set fair, Notts will need to bat well from here on in to avoid defeat.

Ah but he's a spinner Guildford, he doesn't meet the criteria for a green top at Durham in May.

He can go into the spinning side for games at The Oval in August. He'll join Adil Rashid (captain obvs), Azeem Rafiq, Scott Borthwick and Zafar Ansari as founding members

Good fightback by Ervine for Hants getting some vital batting points.

Superb from Rushworth.

I see Robson has struggled recently for Middlesex. That his England chance over?

Warks just about surviving. 28/1 off 11.

Collingwood now on. Conditions should suit him well. If he can settle into a groove, wouldn't be amazed to see him bowl 10 on the reel.

Well, amost a straight 10 overs from Collingwood. 7 on the reel and then a change of ends to immediately bowl the remaining 3. He ends with good figures of 2/36. Warks in trouble - as they have been normally all morning - now on 107/5 off 32 although starting to mount a possible recovery. Chopra still there trying to hold things together and has moved to a half century. Now partnered by Woakes driving impressively on about 30.

124/6 off 32. 42 runs or 4 wkts to win. Overs almost irrelevant. Mixed bag from the Warks bowlers. Patel the best which makes the lack of any bowling from Javid the more surprising.

And with that ... Patel gets Durham's 7th wicket. The Bears have a decent chance of getting their hands on the honey but Patel now only has one over left. Someone else will have to step up with the ball ....

Durham get home by 3 wkts. Nous from Breese in his last game for Durham. Thrilling game proving yet again that you don't need a lot of runs for a lot of excitement.

Deserved victory for Durham. Greater consistency from their bowlers whilst Warks were wasteful in only batting 47 overs.

Patel - my MofM although 2 or 3 contenders.
