Tassie 2014
My favourite week of the golfing year is but 3 weeks away. Almost finalised my itinery
Travelling up to Lancashire on the Thurs evening (4th Sept), working on a Captains Courtesy round at one of the Lancashire Courses Friday
Travelling on up to Ayrshire, Friday night at my mums before travelling over to Carnoustie on the Saturday, Twilight on the Burnside
Sun is the practice round on the Championship
Mon - Thurs (at least) is the Comp (Medals Mon-Tues then depending on result either knockouts or Consolation stablefords).
If still in the knockouts great, if not one of my mates has booked Gleneagles Kings on Friday
Then its the Open at Trumps on Saturday.
Won't be staying up Aberdeen way, travelling back down to around Edinburgh/Fife on Saturday evening so will be up for a round somewhere on Sunday around Edinburgh/Fife (North Berwick tempting) Only 2 of us doing Trumps & staying somewhere Sat night. So if anyone fancies a game somewhere Sunday and wants to make up a 3 or 4 ball PM me.
With where my game is at I'd like to think I had a realistic chance of making the Scratch KO this year but we'll see.

JAS, if you get the opportunity, try and get a round at Montrose. Incredible course.

Re: Tassie 2014
Might try for an afternoon one on the Weds depending on what part of the Comp I'm in and what tee time I have Weds morning. Could try Sunday but that would make the drive home after a very long one. Also considering Silloth on the Sunday on the way home

Re: Tassie 2014
Just arrived at Carnoustie, from what I can see the courses look in immaculate condition, sneaky wee round on the Burnside this afternoon and I'll find out.
Not sure what my expectations are this year. A win last week followed by a real tedious struggle at Lytham yesterday so it could go either way, would like to make the scratch but we'll see. I'll be happy just to totally immerse myself in golf for a week.

Bunkering at Lytham sorts the men out from the boys.

Re: Tassie 2014
I imagine it does Gael, I got up and down after going in a green side bunker on the first, never touched another one until 17 when I went in both a fairway and green side bunker but still limited myself to bogey. It's not so much going in them , it's the head messing that goes on trying to avoid them. :-p

Re: Tassie 2014
Paid the princely sum of £21 for a round on the Burnside, Got to say I think I'd struggle to find a more immaculately prepared course at that price, obviously it benefits (I assume) from the green keeping regime of it's neighbour but all the same, very impressed with it's condition.
A couple of triples ruined what would have been a good score, still, it's better to make those mistakes on practice days.
Final practice on the Chmpionship today :-)

Oh Yeah!! Gross 69 net 64 on the Burnside, that should see me down to 4 and a golden opportunity to make the Scratch if I can keep my head on on the Championship Course tomorrow... very happy bunny tonight :-))

Re: Tassie 2014
Cheers Guys, so many good scores this year, never seen Carnoustie so benign. Last year it was 161 to get into the scratch and net 155 for the hcp. I reckon it'll be 5 or 6 less this year.

Re: Tassie 2014
Bugger, let a few go today, closing stretch just killed me. However 84 and a 153 total made the scratch, unfortunately the draw has paired me up against Danny Elder. Never say never obviously but if I'm on here tomorrow night talking about the 2nd round then tomorrow morning will have been my finest 4 hours on a golf course...EVER!!

Congratulations and good luck JAS. Just because he's club champion doesn't mean he's unbeatable. Take him down !

Not the best draw for you obviously JAS, off +4 I think and on his home course.
All the best for today.

See above Mac, +4 and club champ on his home course (Carnoustie).
Hence, tricky draw

There's no shame in losing to a guy that good, playing that well, and on his home course.
You'd have to say it's pretty wretched luck to draw him in the first round as well.

Hard luck JAS,
I have to say I'm a bit surprised such a player gets involved in such a tournament.
Bit like the competitive Dad sketch and if I were him, I'd leave such a competition for true club golfers.

Re: Tassie 2014
As a few have obviously seen from the results, took a proper pasting on Weds. Nothing I could do really. Going 2 down early didn't help. +3/+4 golfers playing decent just aren't going to give holes away and so it proved. Annoyingly played in after the match closed out and shot 1 over for the last 6. Had I done that on the Tuesday I'd have ended up with a much better draw.
Qualifying scores were incredibly low this year last 3 years the cut for the scratch has been 161 and the hcp 154/155. This year it was 154 & 148
My conqueror has how fallen at the Q/F to the top seed (another Carnoustie lad). A few of the top Carnoustie guys do the Tassie Super, it is effectively a Club Comp for them. If I was was local and top level competitive I'd do it too.
Off to Trumps this morning (swing has gone a bit awry since Weds so not going with much expectation) Having said that the weather looks decent again

How much was the entry fee for 2014? It used to be a bargain. Don't know how much it is now.

Re: Tassie 2014
It was £210 this year George, it's crept up slowly but steadily since I started playing it £180 in 2010.
Still not bad for 6 rounds of which at least 3 should be on the championship course, unless you progress fairly deep into the Maulesbank (hcp) knockout which is on the Burnside.
They are thinking of using the Buddon instead of the Burnside next year or the year after.

Re: Tassie 2014
Notice how the thread went incredibly quiet on my part after saying that i was off to Trumps...Got it fairly benign and still managed a car crash of a score. It made Carnoustie seem easy (no mean feat).

Ive only played it once even though its on my doorstep too. Would love to play it again, I played it quite early about 6 months after it opened, so would love to see how its bedded in now.

Yeah, I want to give it a wee bit to bed in, although The Castle, Kingsbarns and Castle Stuart were all decent pretty quick after opening.

Super
Would just like to remind you that over the years you have promised to take me for a round on the Castle course and Trumpton. Any chance you will ever come good on that?

Re: Tassie 2014
Honestly think it's superb Super, probably a "Patrick Reed" in the UK already. You have to be long and you have to be straight (we played it off the golds (about 7100). Greens are superbly contoured as well, they could be quicker but they are true. The fairways are much better now than when I tried it just after it opened.
Think it's only a matter of time before it gets a ET event. Rose stayed there and practiced there before his Scottish Open win at RA and raved about the place.

There is no way I am playing off tees over 7000 yards by the way. 6800 is about my limit before the game becomes a chore.

I went down for a look in 2012 Christmas, only got to see a few holes before a very polite Latvian escorted me off the premises. No doubt they probably get a few of the professional protesters trespassing with a view to damage.
