England's 30 Man Performance Squad Empty England's 30 Man Performance Squad

Post by LondonTiger Fri 13 May 2016, 12:29 pm

At the same time as the 12 man party for Headingley was announced, Andrew Strauss also announce the formation of a 30 man performance squad. This seems to have gone under the radar a little, but certainly gives an indication as to players that are being looked at. Some of course may only be in the running for limited overs cricket.

Performance Squad
A 30-man Performance Squad for the 2016 summer season has been announced. This includes the 22 players who are centrally contracted and incrementally contracted. The additional eight players, currently in the County system, make up the rest.

ECB Director of England Cricket, Andrew Strauss, added:

“This is the first time in two seasons we have selected an England Performance Squad. I feel that it is important that we do so to enable our staff to monitor effectively those players who are on our radar, but not necessarily part of one of the England teams. It is also important to point out that it does not confine the selectors to pick from this squad.”

England 30-man Performance Squad

Moeen Ali* (Worcestershire)
James Anderson* (Lancashire)
Zafar Ansari (Surrey)
Jonny Bairstow** (Yorkshire)
Jake Ball (Nottinghamshire)
Gary Ballance** (Yorkshire)
Ian Bell* (Warwickshire)
Sam Billings (Kent)
Stuart Broad* (Nottinghamshire)
Jos Buttler* (Lancashire)
Nick Compton** (Middlesex)
Alastair Cook* (Essex)
Tom Curran (Surrey)
Liam Dawson (Hampshire)
Steven Finn* (Middlesex)
Mark Footitt (Surrey)
Alex Hales** (Nottinghamshire)
Chris Jordan** (Sussex)
Eoin Morgan* (Middlesex)
Jamie Overton (Somerset)
Liam Plunkett** (Yorkshire)
Adil Rashid** (Yorkshire)
Joe Root* (Yorkshire)
Jason Roy** (Surrey)
Ben Stokes* (Durham)
Reece Topley (Hampshire)
James Vince (Hampshire)
David Willey** (Yorkshire)
Chris Woakes** (Warwickshire)
Mark Wood* (Durham)

*England Centrally Contracted

**England Incrementally Contracted

As all currently contracted players are on the list, it means Ian Bell is still there, but there were clear indications at the press conference that they will only return to him in an absolute emergency.

Easy enough then all central contracted, incrementally contracted and the Lions players. That must have taken 5 minutes.

Fast bowlers - Anderson Ball Broad Curran Finn Footitt Jordan Overton Plunkett Stokes Topley Willey Woakes and Wood, almost half of the squad.

Now that Ball has been called up for Tests I expect he will be in the ODI squad. On the England Lions tour to the UAE - Ball 6 wickets at 25.83 and Curran 9 wickets at 22.88. Then there is the batting Malan 52.75 and 50.60 in 20/20s and Vince 47.20 and 5.20. My choice for the ODIs would be Malan and Curran rather than Vince and Ball. Malan's career 40.47 to Vince's 35.80 but the selectors go on likeablity rather than stats. Smile

Farbrace believes England have up to 21 players good enough to play anytime in the ODI side. I would think ..

Moeen Ali
Zafar Ansari
Jonny Bairstow
Sam Billings
Stuart Broad
Jos Buttler
Liam Dawson
Steven Finn
Alex Hales
Chris Jordan
Eoin Morgan
Liam Plunkett
Adil Rashid
Joe Root
Jason Roy
Ben Stokes
Reece Topley
James Vince
David Willey
Chris Woakes
Mark Wood

So I guess the ones not good enough would be
Anderson, Ball, Ballance, Bell, Compton, Cook, Curran, Footitt and C Overton   Laugh

The Lions comfortably beat Pakistan A today with Tom Curran picking up 4 wickets, Mark wood 3 wickets but the star of the show was undoubtedly Ben Duckett with a magnificent 163 not out off 104 balls!

Aye, this would have been a better place for the comment I put on another thread

LondonTiger wrote:Some interesting performances from the Lions. CurranT and Mark Wood showing up well with the ball, but perhaps outdone by a wonderful ton from Ben Duckett. Small of stature but huge on talent - I do wonder how long he will stay at Northants.

Hasn't Duckett had some attitude issues in regards to training? Think I remember Northants leaving him out of a pre season tour because of them. If he's sorted himself out (and carries out scoring runs), you'd think Northants would struggle to hold onto him.

I was not aware of that, but looking him up you are right. Was left out of last seasons pre-season tour due to fitness not being high enough, and apparently previousley left out of an England U19 squad for the same reasons. Then early last summer he was done from drink driving. Maybe that was all a big wake up call as since then his game has been very good. Wonder if he will take up the gloves again - or if from now on he will be a batter only.

Never seen him keep, but I think Joe Clarke had the gloves when they both played in the U19 WC. Joe Clarke can't get the gloves off Ben Cox for Worcs, which is no real slight as Cox is fantastic, but from anecdotal stories from Shropshire Club cricketers who have seen JC keep... Well, I wouldn't be pinning my hopes on Duckett as a keeper/bat if Clarke was better than him!

185 not out off 126 balls for Dawid Malan as the lions crushed Sri Lanka A today

Expecting to see him given a go in the next round of ODI/T20's

Also good to see Mark Wood back and playing

Imagine he is building up to play ODIs back end of the summer and get onto the plane to India this winter

Preferably Malan plays ahead of Joe Root. Guy needs a break. Plus Malan's leg breaks are properly filthy, and who doesn't love a filthy part time leg spinner!

Was devastated we didn't see some Gary Ballance dirty leg spin in the 1st test Sad

Not a bad shout him coming in for Root in the ODI's - wouldn't be surprised to see them give Hales a rest as well (maybe someone like Bell-Drummond or Duckett given a shot)

Interesting consistency in the batting performance of the Lions in the recent matches with one batsman getting a really big hundred.  Today it was Billings' turn.

Duckett 163 off 104 balls
Malan 185 off 126 balls
Billings 175 off 139 balls

Today Pakistan A batsmen gave the Lions' bowlers a stiffer test, although the eventual margin of victory (56 runs) was fairly convincing. The wickets were split fairly evenly for the Lions, with Wood and Tom Curran the best, if the figures were a fair reflection of their performance.

In latest match against Sri Lanka A, the Lions are going well again, on 199 - 1 after 30 overs, with both Bell-Drummond and Duckett in the 80s.

Sounds as if the opposition is a bit ordinary , doesn't it ? Not to take away too much from some good performances ; but you have to wonder how much these scores really show about the potential young talent.

And today, two batsmen scored heavily, in a massive partnership of 367 off 38.4 overs:

Bell-Drummond 171 off 139 balls
Duckett 220 off 131 balls

Near the end they scored 70 runs in four overs! Shocked Shocked Shocked

There may just be something in Alfie's suggestion that the opposition bowling could be rather ordinary.  In any event, it seems that once one of the Lions' batsmen gets on top of the bowling there is then an avalanche of runs.

Final total 425 - 1.

It does become rather hard to take the SL/Pak bowling seriously, but even so some magnificent hitting.

Mark Wood's 8-79 from 3 matches (24 overs) has been equally impressive.

Ultimately at the end of the day they are playing against their peers so to speak - so it is a promising sign that they are tearing them to pieces!

220 off 131 balls is pretty damn impressive whatever bowling you're facing
