I thought I'd start a 2014 BBL thread so we can chat about any matches and discuss players performances.

Quite a few international players spread out amongst the squads. Most of the Australians will be missing but still lots of depth and experience there. It will be interesting to see how the England players perform as well as some key marquee stars like Jacques Kallis and Andrew Flintoff in particular.

Should be fun.

Not a big audience for this ?

I don't known, LD...I am watching the Stars in a vain attempt to overhaul the target put up by ...the Purple Mob. But I can't pretend to give a damn which of them wins it. Maybe just me ; but players bought and sold for commercial franchises and the very title Big Bash... Yes I know i'm old fashioned. But it just doesn't grab me. Will look if I have nothing else to do , but that's as far as I'll go.

Some great hitting , true. But I am a bowler and I don't really like seeing the rules and the superbats reduce them to bit players in a slogathon.

Merry Christmas anyway

Thanks alfie, you too.

Yes, I wouldn't say I'll be glued to every minute of it but some games will be interesting to watch certain players.

The crowds look a little sparse for these early games. Not sure if they will pick up much... maybe they will for one or two of the derbies?
I suppose people have better things to do or they are more interested in the bigger things coming up like the Boxing Day Test and all of the WC matches.

Not a huge fan of the "over the top" commentary either... but have to chuckle sometimes at the little jibes they make to each other.
Pretty childish but lightly entertaining in a funny sort of way!

The purple team played very well though. Disappointed Hales and KP weren't out there longer. They might have made a difference. Smile

I like the Big Bash, and most T20 competitions, but that's because I see them for what they are. Some hit and giggle to fill some pockets. I would also say, though, it's nice for the best players in the world to play together, like in the football. Of course the rules (foreign player limitations), can mean there are at times horrid mismatches between club players and internationals... I enjoy it.

Jeez, Kallis and Hussey pretty much dismantled the bowling there. The two old dogs.

That was a thrilling finish.
I thought the Strikers had blown it when they were 6/7 down for not more than 100.
The 6 from Zampa, with a couple of balls to go, was sort of unexpected.

Starc has ripped the steel plate holding the gear in the stumps right out of the ground.
Kallis out for 3.

Earlier on, the Sixers made 180/7.
At one stage it looked as though they would get closer to 200.

It has been a long day... starting with the NZ-SL match, then Aus-India.
A bit of a rain delay in SA (I see they are back on now)... so having some T20 desert now.

Sixers simply have the wood over the Thunder. 6 wins in a row now.

After losing Kallis and Hussey early they were always going to struggle against the 6ers bowling. Surprised the Thunder got within 16 runs in the end... they could have properly crashed out and lost by over 50 runs with a few overs to go.

Disappointed Morgan didn't make an impact. Sort of understand how England fans might feel... but I'm sure he will click in the coming months.

The Stars will be desperate to avoid a 0-3 start to the season in Brisbane tonight.

Jason Roy has signed up for a three match stint with Sydney Thunder, replacing Eoin Morgan early next month when the latter joins up again with the England squad.

It'll be interesting to see how Roy gets on. He was the top scorer last season in the English t20 domestic competition and imo should have been included in England's 15 man World Cup squad.

Well at least he will be in the right place if somebody in the England squad pulls a hamstring, Guildford. Wink

It was an absolute nail-biter last night. The Heat managed to win by a solitary run against the Stars. Credit to Rob Quiney who was forced to come back on for the final overs after picking up what looked like a painful leg injury earlier on. The guy could barely walk at one stage. As some wit quipped upon his return to the crease: "no need to run if he can clear the ropes"... which he did in the closing overs. That would have been a miracle comeback for the Stars if they had managed to win that one.

The Perth Scorchers have set the Sixers 136 runs to win.
Some diabolically late swing bowling from Starc to dismiss Agar and Whiteman.

James Pattinson ripped through the Thunder top order taking 3/24 off his 4 overs. Good to see him back and firing.

Thunder 55/5... getting blown apart. Andre Russell getting into the act with 2 quick wickets (Morgan and Blizzard) now.

Looking forward to seeing Jason Roy in the Thunder line-up with Eoin Morgan now having ended his stint and joining the England WC team.

The Scorchers were ambushed a little on their home turf last night. The Thunder juggled their batting order a little and got off to a good start. Then Kallis took over and enabled them to reach 179. Hartley, as Thunder captain, made a good call getting Hauritz's 4 overs out of the way relatively early. Kallis bowled very tidily... he should have got 3 wickets. It looked closer in the end (only 20 runs) but Perth were looking down the barrel at 42/4 after the 7th over.

Exciting, high scoring win for the Hobart Hurricanes last night. After Brisbane posted 208... the way the Canes chased down that big total was very entertaining indeed. Small ground but still some massive hits. One from Christian landed in someone's backyard vegetable patch.

Another much needed win for the Stars over the Sixers at the MCG last night.
It went down to a super over after both teams put 150 runs on the scoreboard.

Faulkner, in partnership Wright smashed 19 runs off Brett Lee.
In reply, the 6ers lost a couple of wickets and struggled to put on 9 runs.

I designed bits of "Spotless Stadium" back in 1996-7. We called it the Sydney Show Ring back then though.

It was used for baseball during the Olympics and is now used for The Easter Show animal parade, outdoor concerts and AFL. It's already had some modifications made to it.... and I must say it's looking good. It's great to see Jacques Kallis, the Huss and the Thunder playing there.

The quality of this year's BBL has been rather questionable by normal standards. Getting West Indian stars who only played a handful of games was bad for team chemistry. Reading the top ten run makers in the competition this year it reads like a who's who.... as in who are these people. It's definitely been a whole lot of fun, but I struggle to take local T20 competition seriously, as they tend to be a combination of coming out parties for kids, and semi retirement shindigs.

Last couple of matches have been high quality.

My favourites so far have been the Heat's win over the Hurricanes in Hobart and the Stars have featured in some excellent wins. They'll have to beat the Scorchers again (this time in Perth) tomorrow night to reach the Final.

The Sixers have gone quietly about their business to stay in the top 4. They've set a decent total for the Strikers to chase.
The winners will also advance to the Final - which will be played in Canberra this year due to some WC warm-up matches at the big venues.

I know the final has to be played on a neutral ground, however, from what I saw, that ground was an embarrassment for such an occasion.
