First topic message reminder :

Remember when I came over here...........The first election I can remember was the local elections.........I was living in a leafy suburb called Prestbury.....Prestbury is the sort of place where a dead parrot could get elected If it had a blue rosette pinned to it !!....We didn't even have a Labour candidate !!...It was just Con v Lib..........As I recall it was something stupid like 960 votes against 71..............Would have been 72 If I'd been eligible to vote back then !!....But that would come later..

All these years later I'm living in a constituency called Manchester Withington and the good thing is my vote counts..........It's a tenuous Liberal hold.......Judging by the amount of Liberal leaflets coming through our door they are pretty worried about keeping it.....

Britain suffers from the same bellwether sickness we have back home where unless you're from Florida , Pennsylvania, Colorado your vote doesn't really count.....

PR would have been a good idea...........

According to a poll on the Telegraph website, of just over 9000, 49% intend to vote UKIP.

Let's bloody hope it does count.

Was always under the impression that all these women chained themselves to railings, and all those civil rights marches were so that they could choose which constituents best represented them, and their ideals.

I'm sure the Sudanese population will be quite nonplussed though to find there's nothing but contempt for those who would rather not choose which dictatorship to live under in a few months.

I can't tell if Duty is hoping that poll is representative of the country either

Quite simple mate, the "people who don't vote deserve nothing but contempt/ it's a duty/ there is no excuse" argument for voting is almost certainly the most amusing thing I've read on here.

Try telling people who've lived for decades under robber barons of various guises that they absolutely have to choose who the next person to exploit them is. It's a ridiculous concept. You vote for who you believe is the person who best represents your ideals, and is most likely to carry them forward. If they don't exist, and you can't find a convenient plug in, don't vote. Why should you?

In Wales I think people who don't tick the Plaid Cymru box should be banned from voting

Well I dearly wish it were, it obviously is not, but one can hope!

Good to see the amount of support UKIP are getting from readers of the Times and the Telegraph - whilst not unduly surprising, it is enough to stop the lefties foaming at the mouth about how UKIP is populated entirely by Daily Mail readers.

I don't see the logic there - shouldn't moan about dictator A being in power because they neglected to put dictator B in power? Seems rather masochistic.

Look, I've got no qualms about voting. I'm almost certainly gonna vote in the next local elections. They've done a reasonable job, and it's almost certainly gonna be close enough for every vote to count. But with that said, on a national level - the options are quite pathetic. I've got the robber barons who are building a $20 million compound for the prezzie, with a fire pool, the main opposition who's only main manifesto is "we won't do what they are doing", and a beret wearing socialist who would nationalise my family farm given half a chance. I'm not gonna vote for any of them on national level, no chance.

I've got no issue with more being expected of the public in the UK with respect to voting. I understand why. I do take issue with the idea that you ABSOLUTELY have to vote, or you're a bad person. Seems to indicate a nirvana of sorts where there's a party for everyone, and there's some good in the party's you can vote for... Pity there's an entire continent which has proven that to not be the case.

I won't be voting here, but completely agree with Raf's point about those societies etc where choice isn't choice

Uh... no. Do read up... even a little. Will help immensely. My dad bought the property for next to nothing in the heady days of the nineties when a couple hundred thousand white South Africans decided they'd rather emigrate than have a black president. I'm sure you empathise

Yes, Dolph?

It really is a sad state of affairs, but Nigel Farage is the last hope this country has.

I have no idea how it got this bad (perhaps a semblance), but there we go.
