First topic message reminder :

Removed the old one because it was full of crap.

Remember that this section is open only under the condition that it isn't used to attack others. Attacks based on religion was a big reason why it was closed the last two times, so cut it out. If you can't play nicely, don't play at all.

Next time I'm just deleting the section, it's a waste of my time having to wade through all the crap. This thread is supposed to be light-hearted, keep it that way.

Net 'help' pages where the question is never remotely answered but 20,000 useless comments show up nonetheless... mostly in my case over the years concerning computer issues.

"Can anyone tell me how to resize a Blender window?"

"Yeah, I can't do it neither."

"I have the same problem"

"That's what I can't do too!!!"

"Did you try looking for an online manual?"

"I tried pressing the green button on the top left corner three times, then rebooting the computer, then typing P in the dialogue box that pops up when you tap Q...... that didn't work either"

"Giraffes!  That's the ones I was thinking about.  That's the ones the zebras rely on to keep a look out for lions at watering holes."

"I love them documentaries where the crocodiles come up and pull the wildebeast in by their nose!!!"

"Yeah, but her second album wasn't that great"

..........

Now that I think about it.... that reminds me of a regular 606 thread Whistle

That's a good one. It would take so little time and effort to send an email to all unsuccessful candidates.

I don't mind the first sift Luck, it's more after getting a phone call, having a chat going through that, being told you sound like a good fit and they'll get back to me in a week or 2 and then nothing. The worst are the ones that then ring back 3 or 4 weeks later and get huffy because you've signed elsewhere.

You want recruiters to pretend they are caring humans??????  In this high-yield, ultra efficient, self-drive, cold economic logic age?????

Think it's a little late to be trying to cage the golden goose of non-emotional robotic efficiency economic growth.  It's loose.  Cop on lads..... they got no time to be human - time is money, you're just a tool they didn't buy.

I often laugh at my mother. Well on in age now but still savvy enough to be up and about in the real world taking unsolicited calls on the phone etc....

.... but she can't kick the habit of being human. It just is something this new age can't teach her.

So when these guys from India or Eastern Europe call and offer her every service under the sun, she always feels it so necessary to try to explain to them why she's not interested at this time, that someone is at the door, that the dog needs to be put out etc etc.
I just laugh at her innocence and keep trying to tell her to just put the phone down - they won't be offended. They are drones. It's straight on to the next phone number on their list of thousands they have to get through to get their wages. They don't care, Mam. You're a number not a human being. Drop the phone instantly.
The communication is not a human one.

Maybe the issue I had was with that very word 'sorry'.  Why say it if they don't mean it?  And why want it if they don't mean it?  It's just another business word now if used at all - all meaning sucked from it. Courtesy mimic word.

"We're sorry that at this time we won't be asking you to join us but we do wish you all the best in your future career path"

They don't feel or mean a word of it.

One Americanism that's starting to creep in here and which really annoys me is people saying 'we reached out to X' instead of 'we contacted X', for comment on a story or whatever. You didn't 'reach out'. It wasn't an act of compassion or support. You contacted them. That's the word to use!

Good call on that one though it's been around for a good few years.  One of my colleagues has it so ingrained that he used it in conversation in the pub after work - kiddie fiddlers in prison put up with less abuse than he deservedly received.

The way everyone sat down at their tables while the Tory Mp manhandled a young girl was probably more depressing than the abuse itself..

Couldn't sit and watch that however much of a nuisance these Protesters can be..

It looked full on.  Looked to me like the guy felt threatened and reacted instinctively.  And what instincts! Security/military/police background?

Supposing he had disarmed/impeded a protester intent in causing bodily damage to anybody in that building?  All sexes can kill and cause injury if intent on doing so.  That rush of fear and adrenaline can make people act in aggressive ways if they feel threatened.

He had quick reactions and I think the right force if he was sincere in thinking the protest had the potential to be a violent one.

Perhaps a hero under other circumstances...but girl unarmed, well, he's unfortunately going to be a villain.

It was Greenpeace, and they'd been in there for minutes and obviously didn't pose a threat to anyone. This isn't an ISIS sleeper cell. Protestors being annoying and inconveniencing you is kinda the point of protesting - doesn't give you permission to act with impunity.

You're aware of the concept of infiltration?  Just because the poster might say 'Peaceful March on Here', that in no way guarantees the true intention of a protest.

It was Greenpeace.  That's a hindsight declaration to the people in the room who might have feared for their safety.  The men in the group who entered with the women weren't even wearing the 'climate' identifiers.

It is part of the activism - send a woman in first, have people behind her video her - then any type of "manhandling" to remove her creates a video to be released by the progressive media.   This angers the forever angry keyboard warriors who immediately head to 606v2 and other outlets raging at the "Tory scum", "Tory c**ts" et cetera.

I see the woman herself, when it was put to her that his reaction might have been informed by politicians having being attacked ...and having been murdered, she said he overreacted.  But she also said: "He panicked".

She seems a decent woman btw.  She was engaging in her protest.  I think she accepts that he was operating under emotional pressure of the situation.  And at least for now, appears to be willing to leave it there.
I think we might see these two in the future meet up and shake hands.

OK

We find common ground at last, Truss!

There are supposed classics that I simply and instinctively have never watched, or have tried to watch and couldn't make it through the dross

Mama Mia, I've never needed to see.  Titanic, I've tried snippets of now and then over the years.  But my gut instinct was always that it was crap.

The only movie that cheated my initial instincts so far was The Devil Wears Prada.  Never warmed to the idea of it.  Chick flic stuff in my opinion.  Then one day a niece forced me to watch it with her.  Loved it.  But then again, it did have Emily Blunt in iit Cool .....playing a wonderfully salty bitch.  Her best role to date.

People who use their mobile/smart phone as if it's a Star Trek communicator when conducting a phone call with the person they're speaking to via speakerphone.

**** off! I'm not even interested in the banalities of your half of the conversation, let alone the nonsense your friend/partner/work colleague is subjecting the rest of us to.
**** off (to the power of 10) as well, if they're conducting a FaceTime/Skype/other video conversation.

**** off! I'm not even interested in the banalities of your half of the conversation, let alone the nonsense your friend/partner/work colleague is subjecting the rest of us to.
**** off (to the power of 10) as well, if they're conducting a FaceTime/Skype/other video conversation.

This. Some people seem incapable of moving their phone the extra six inches to the side of their head so I only have to hear one half of their banal conversation.

If I'm talking to someone on the phone, I don't really want other people to hear what I'm saying, never mind what the person on the other end of the phone is saying.

I think you can divide people equally well on whether they move to avoid a TV camera crew filming in the street, or move towards it to try and get in the shot.

Indeed. It is most illogical.

Yes, let's bring a degree of normalcy back to the King's English.

Funny you should mention that as I was just on my way in to put Disaster Press Conferences on the List.

Not so much of a problem with official 'First Responders' (another title I hate) talking to the public.  It's the choreography that I hate.  You have one guy as spokesperson, who takes all the questions...but virtually all heads of all damn departments involved have to try to get their heads on camera behind him..... and they squeeze and squeeze and squeeze to make sure their name tag and their cap and their medals get on the podium too.  Comical crap.

It has been long an exercise in self preening in America but bit by bit, the same antics are coming in thus side of the Atlantic too.  All we need is the one guy.  It's a disaster.  The rest of you hop it back to your jobs, you're probably needed.

Anyone else take an exceedingly dim view of the new Nationwide adverts with bad stand-up comedy on them?

The ads with bad poetry on them were bad enough!

No joke, here in the Philippines even blackouts are referred to as "brownouts".
