I'd say there is quite a lot in it for Boris. He is a popular figure with the British public and one who would be a shoo in for the next PM if the UK opts out (in my opinion). Cameron (to all intense purposes) always comes across as an upper class twit with his head up his own a$$ whereas Boris I'd say is seen more as a people's man in touch more with the working class people. That kind of figurehead up against Cameron could influence people on how they vote in this referendum.

All this indicates is how biblically stupid some people are. The idea that either of those two is in touch with the common working class person is laughable in its naivety.

Boris plays the fool very well. I think he knows full well that if he picks up the UKIP slant on things, to leave, then he may recover those voters for the Conservatives. Those voters could be crucial to winning, and if that is the case then it strengthens his chance of leadership.

Completely agree. Neither is working class and good for it. Why would anyone want a working class person running the country is beyond me.

You mean, shock horror, if he reintroduces some Conservative values to the Conservative Party - which the empty, vision-less and insipid Cameron has taken away - he might regain the Conservative vote?!

Seeing as how a majority of Tory MPs are set to back Brexit, it really shows how much they are against Cameron.

Vote Remain - Osborne will be PM. Vote Leave - Uncle Boris.

I'm not looking for a bite. Cameron isn't a Conservative, he says as much. He alienates most of his party. I'm astonished they've put up with him for so long.

He's more popular than his party might be a good reason.........

Tax cuts for the rich..
Welfare cuts
Union reform
Legal aid cuts
Tribunal restriction.........
More privatisation in the NHS..
Housing policy (Starter homes).....That ignores low earners..

That's only a few....

Stop being silly...

I wonder if those backing a pull out of Europe will be painted as crazed anti-Europeans as Scots were of being anti-English who voted for independence. Point being that people are NOT anti-Europe or anti-English just because they feel they'd be better off going it alone.

Anyway carry on debating...... thumbsup

Yep. I noticed - quite funny really. I also noticed that, in general, the only crazies in the Scottish Ref were Nats.

Hmm.....well never saw a Nationalist screwing a pig. Laugh
That's relevant to the independence campaign how exactly?

About just as relevant as the claim only crazies were Nats in the Scottish Referendum. Obviously, you weren't in George Square when Unionist loons went looking for a fight:-

I wasn't wishing to air dirty laundry in public. And I meant no offence. It's just I felt a little affronted that I'm on this forum with a target on my back from the mod team (accepting my past behaviour has been poor) but that I'm getting warned by someone hurling abuse/insults around at other posters.

On topic, and ref the 'blind Tory voter' comment, I've 4 close friends in education - one in primary, two in secondary and one in University, as well as a mother with 35 years as a teacher then headteacher then LEA specialist advisor going in to help support heads and turnaround troubled schools, so I do have a little insight, if not personal experience, thanks.

This is a topic I am obviously very entrenched in and one that is rather emotive for me, so I'm on a fool's errand bringing it into such a debate as Brexit (or whatever god awful name it has!) but I won't apologise for being passionate about it, and even getting enraged by errand comments. What makes me sad is that high quality candidates to teach are getting rightly put off by a bureaucratic, target driven system where lions are led by donkeys.

Indeed, its rather clever really. And it is worth noting that he has done a good job as London Mayor. Really, I see him as a better face of Tory government than any other candidate, and I would be fascinated to see the two major parties led by Corbyn and Johnson. With very little competition they would be the most personable leading pair in my lifetime.

Bureaucracy is a problem that blights every facet of the public sector.

It's part of the reason I believe in small government.

One of the many changes I'd like to see in schools/education/teaching though, which my mum advocating and you may well agree with me on, is the abolishment of league tables for Key Stage 1-3. I would keep some level of examination at the culmination of each stage, but it should simply be a factor in teacher's measurement of pupil's performance, along with teachers' own qualitative assessments, and not something that's published and used to judge whole schools on to the detriment of quality education (i.e. removing the need for kids spending a horrendous time revising as opposed to learning in their more formative years especially).

And I say that as a suggestion that would have been poor for me personally as I always nailed exams! Smile

Surely Corbyn will be six foot under by the time BoJo is Tory leader? But yes, that would lead to PMQs that would live long in the memory.

On the subject of education, my wife's school (she is a teacher) has not received an Ofsted inspection for 9 years. This is because last time it was graded as outstanding. However, I know full well the standard of teaching has dropped, as experienced teachers have left to be replaced by a succession of NQTs and train-on-the-jobs. Why should the outstanding schools face any less scrutiny than the underachieving ones? That is on Michael Gove, and it is fooling parents into sending their child to a school that does not deserve its former reputation. Think how many schools across the country face a similar situation.

Laugh You have to love this. This is a teacher (correct?), using no actual evidence, to mudsling about someone's political convictions. I hope you don't have anything to do with evidence-based subject matter....

You're an idiot and I expect that to stay put here given your previous pottymouth output that I refrained from calling you out on. I have a PGCHE and am applying for Senior Fellowship of the HEA. I have to play a part in admissions and assessment as well as teach.
I write references for graduates who want to go into teaching, who've mainly got 2:2s or 3rds (admittedly there are clever graduates wanting this too) - I wonder what it's like trying to teach a pupil who's brighter than you are? Tough. No wonder we have problems.
I see the students, huge numbers of whom don't have a clue what they don't know. We require AAB (Chem, other science, one other) and they can't do simple algebra, don't know what a Mole is or why it's important, etc etc etc etc etc.

Of course the Union isn't Utopia. Never said it was. The sooner Scotland stops acting like a gaelic Quebec, the better. Wonder what Swinney's going to do with his new tax-raising powers? Got to fund them freebies somehow so no doubt they'll get a hike. Be interesting to see how that plays...

A slight difference though don't you think? Quebec was barely a colonized state when it became part of Canada so has never really experienced independence. Scotland was an independent country for far longer than it has been part of the union.

I know two people who work in his office and they both say that the 'fool Boris' is an act, and that he's far more intelligent than the rest of the party. He's worked out how to get public support, done a good job as London Mayor, and only has his eyes on being PM. Every action of his from here on in leads up to a leadership battle.

I for one would love to see Boris in 10 Downing Street. Wink

I saw his episode of Who Do You Think You Are and its amazing how different he is away from the press. Of course, he still has a good sense of humour, but his intellect and high degree of education were immediately apparent. Turns out he's also distantly related to the royal family...not that it matters much.

Boris just strikes me as being different to pretty much every other politician. Despite the upper-class background, he does come across as a fairly normal guy. Sort of like a posh and better educated Andrew Flintoff...Had a similar feeling about Michael Portillo...

There are two new polls on the EU referendum out tonight – YouGov for the Times and ComRes for the Mail. YouGov have topline figures of REMAIN 37%, LEAVE 38%, DK/WNV 25%; ComRes have topline figures of REMAIN 51%, LEAVE 39%, DK 10%. ComRes was asked Friday to Monday (so started before Cameron’s deal was finalised), YouGov’s poll was asked between Sunday and Tuesday, so was after Cameron’s renegotiation, but straddled Boris Johnson’s endorsement of the Leave campaign.

Certainly would never call Gove stupid.....However like Labour's Ruth Kelly he was unsuited to the Education brief........It's a brief that requires Patience and a facility to get along with people and organisations like the NUT....One of the few meaty Unions still around.

The bull in a china shop approach is better suited to other depts......Got to kill them softly at Education..

Too radical....Too quickly .........Lynton Crosby told Cameron that he was an election liability and to move him...

However Nicky Morgan hasn't exactly set the world a light...........

From BBC:

David Cameron has told Jeremy Corbyn to smarten up his appearance during Prime Minister's Questions.

The prime minister said his mother would advise the Labour leader to "put on a proper suit, do up your tie and sing the national anthem".

He was hitting back at a jibe from a Labour MP about his mother.

The Labour leader took a few moments to respond as Tory MPs barracked him, before offering some "motherly advice" about standing up for a free NHS.

"My late mother would have said, 'stand up for the principle of a health service free at the point of use for everybody', because that's what she dedicated her life to, as did many of her generation," he said.
