We have teamed up with Rugby Union Team Manager to promote an offer on the top Rugby Union management game available.

For those Football Manager fans out there this is the rugby equivalent!

It was totally realistic that I could sign Savea for Edinburgh (having to offload 5 players to be able to afford him....)

It is a good game and I've enjoyed it - spent far too much time on it though!

I'd recommend doing the tutorial first - much easier to spend a bit of time doing that than trying to find everything yourself

I got 2 copies of that around here somewhere, isnt that the one with the unbeatable formation, and with Freddy Adu, Dyonatas, Fabio Paim, Ramon Caliste etc? Or am I a couple of years out? I think I remember it! Bojan Djorkic?

Anyway been playing the game all afternoon, easy enough just sack all your coaches and replace them with Greek blokes with 5 stars and your away! laughing
I'm still trying to figure out how I have world class colts players, yet when I promote them they are amateur ranked! Headscratch
Though my stadium and facilities are just about complete now, one more star to go on the bottom one and I'm all done after one season!
Key to the game is simply employing staff with 5 stars, and having 2 assistants one for the reserves and one for the colts.

It's the one with Okoronkwo, Aghahowa and signing Taribo West on a free transfer! Paul Robinson from Blackburn is also one of the best players in the game.

I actually play with modern players though - there are some wonderful people on the internet who release biannual data updates so you have all the present day players with the original and best format and gameplay. I've just bought Ross Barkley for Juventus!

So on RUTM do you play every game or let your assistants take care of it? I'd get bored quickly if I didn't play the games - that's the best bit!

Also, there's an online forum to ask questions to the developers - I can't promote it but I'm sure you'll manage to find it!

I get the assistants to do the academy and colts sections. Though I am having fun trying to develop the colts. I'm trying to figure out how to develop them properly.

Ok so... you need four Dev Pot (developing potential) coaches, as this gives you 100% training quality at the bottom of the Training / players screen.
The players stay in the Colts for between 1 and 2 years, depending on weather their aged 17 or 18. As they train over the course of the season the Grey bar on the Contracts / Colts contracts screen increases, as the player trains and plays. I also found it seems to help if a particular Dev Pot coach specialises in a position that any players also in that position seem to get a boost in their education.

I been trying to get that World class player Ethan Littlewood (top on list) to progress but he's developing painfully slowly to be honest. Thankfully he's still 17 years old, so will have next season to develop also.

Sadly the Ospreys are woefully under powered in this game it's not even remotely funny. The Ospreys are so weak compared to the Scarlets that you'd think the game was created by a Scarlets fan!
Dan Biggar, and Rhys Webb might as well not be internationals for all the talent they have in the game, their terrible. The only two decent lads we have are AWJ and Tipuric, the rest are hopeless.

I mean cmon it's not even funny sometimes! Also how the hell did Viadana from the amateur teams in Italy make it into my Heinaken Cup pool? Ok granted it was nice to have a couple of easy games home and away but clearly theres some issues that need sorting out in the game.

The Lv Cup is a bit odd also, when I had the first game I threw out my reserves because that's what it's for and came up against the full might of Northampton! I should of done a screenie of it, it wasn't pretty at all! laughing

It's nice I don't have to rest players though, you can just keep the same team every week barring injuries, though it also means you can pretty much sell about 30 players when the game starts as their just sat there doing nothing. I haven't got any non Welsh lads in my Ospreys squad at the moment, I sold most of them to Biarritz and Narbonne! Along with Jarvis, Fussell etc. Basically by the time you sell all the useless players out of your team it's an extra £3m in the bank!

The game seems pretty basic though:
1) Buy a 5 star agent!
2) sack all your coaches / staff and replace them with 5 star coaches - burns up your £2m budget!
3) stick all the players in your squad below national level on the transfer list, and all your foreign players.
4) buy the final Stadium improvement on the facilities screen to increase revenue by 15%.
5) dump all the colts below national standard and scout for new ones.
6) pick your pre-season friendlies, had Zebre / Treviso / Bath and Toulon at home this season =)

I am enjoying the sound effects from Star Trek Birth of the Federation though, they totally ripped them off that game.

Lots of things to fix on the game, but still it's a fantastic first effort by any standards.

It's quite easy in the second season now, those players whom I developed in my Colts academy with the 5 star coaches are starting to trickle through.

Once the World Class or International level player reaches his potential in the colts, you can give him a senior contract and move him into the academy section, he will then reduce in level to "national" level, but his writing will be green:

You also won't be able to promote him to the senior squad yet. if you try you get this messag (International level players, will develop quicker than World class ones at this point):

Once he's matured over time he will turn into this, and be ready to go straight into the first team:

I think once you get into the third season you can REALLY see where the game starts to let itself down, by the end of the first, start of the second season I have already fully upgraded my facilities and your churning out a maximum of 12 really good players a season, most of which are better than whats already in your squad, the problem being then is nearly all of your team is 18-19 years old and basically vastly superior to anything the computer teams throws at you.

Here I am, just before the start of the 4th season, my club is so amazing now that the top clubs are queuing up to visit the Liberty stadium preseason so I'm welcoming Racing Metro, Toulon (for the third season in a row), Munster and  Northampton as my preseason friendlies.  With £26.5M in the bank!

At the crest of Season 4 I have now brought through 40 players into the main Ospreys squad from the Colts / Academy. I got another World class colt only a few weeks away from promotion to the Academy.  In fact I now have so many international / world class players in development, that I have had to totally abandon academy squad because of wage constraints.  Any National level players trained at colt level, go straight into the first team squad, while the International / World Class players go into the Academy only till they reach maturity, and the game lets me promote them.  Because of the wage constraints of top players, my entire Academy squad outside those few elite players are low paid amateur players with intimidation or inspirational bonuses!  Basically a team of thugs to keep the score down.

This is my main squad now going into season 4.  As some of the amateur players are now over age 23, they have to be sold off, as their is a limit of three over 23's in the Academy squad.  Any 18 years olds who have now hit 19, and aren't good enough to displace the first choice player will also be sold off.  In four years, every player at the Ospreys at the start of the game, nearly 60 of them, have been sold off.  All I have left from my original squad is:
Dan Biggar
Justic Tipuric
Alun Wyn Jones
Dan Lydiate,
Dan Baker - He's being sold as he's been superseded:

The likes of Rhys Webb, Eli Walker, Paul James, Aaron Jarvis, James King, Ashley Beck, Lloyd Ashley,Bevington, Arhip, Delve, Matavesi, Dafydd Howells, and Dan Evans have long since been sold because they weren't good enough anymore.

Shifty, is this game worth me buying ? Or would I get bored pretty quickly due to the fact it is not very realistic ? I love the footy manager sims, but this sounds all a little to basic for me, would you recommend it ?

In all honesty I'm totally addicted to it, I get a lot of enjoyment pushing through my youth players to my second team, then from my second team to my main team, watching your young players flourish is fantastic. It's not totally unrealistic because it some ways it's very realistic the wage cap bloody does my dead in, especially when French team seem to always have money to burn. If you can look past the fact that the bottom team in the Pro12 WILL get relegated and replaced by the top team in their domestic league then it's fantastic.
I've probably been very critical of the game in my above posts but it's fantastic and beats anything that's ever been released, even playing the game you have set calls, try and steal their line out / scrum, mad dog defense, champagne rugby, and moves like that. Sometimes when your scrum half makes a break from his own try line slips it to a winger and he out paces his wing then steps inside the full back to score under the posts it's amazing.
All in all it's fantastic, I just wish the Ospreys weren't quite so hard done by with regards to the talent in their squad, Rhys Webb is average for instance, not an international quality player for example and Glasgow are immeasurably over powered it's crazy, your never going to please everyone in a stats based rugby game with regard to judging talent, but if you like the Scarlets or Glasgow you'll be pleased! You can edit the players to make them better etc, but I won't do that I take the players as I get them, though all my foreign players get sold as do Jarvis and Fussell in the first week! Whistle
It's NOT Football Manager, but if you want to play a fun rugby management game then give this a shot, it's only about £12 at the moment, so it's hardly going to break your bank either way. Hug

Re: Rugby Union Team Manager 2016 Season Update and 50% price drop. How’s that for a Christmas present?

Post by Shifty on Tue 05 Jan 2016, 1:08 pm

I've actually done a full guide for it, if anyone is interested:

Rugby Union Team Manager 2015 - playing guide

Level of difficulty:
Basically all that's different on the difficulty levels is the amount of money your club starts with and, can generate during the season, and how harsh the board is going to be with regards to sacking you for not meeting your objectives.

Starting the game:
Each club has a starting bonus relating to the club, which seems to be randomized when you load the game.  The best ones seems to be Improved Coaches or Larger bank balance.
Basically you have a MUCH better chance of success in the game with 5 star coaches and to start with them without having to pay the earth at the start of the game is a massive help!  One of the first things you will need to do in the first week is sack a load of staff and hire new ones, to limit the financial damage this bonus is wonderful!  consider closing and restarting the game until the team you want to play has this bonus.
Larger bank balance is also a great starter as you start with £4m in the bank instead of £2m which means you can change all your coaches and still have a nice little pot left for upgrades.
To find out what bonuses each starting club have, click the icon to load the game from your desk top, click "RUTM 2015" to start, Assuming your going to manager in the Pro12, then click "ACR Structure", "Pro12", "P12 Overview".  Look at the list under initial bonus to see what bonus your club will get.

Staff - Coaches, Agent, Physio etc :
Agent:  The first thing you do when you start a game is sack your old Agent and hire a 5 star one, it pays for itself and it's a MUST.

Assistants:  I don't hire Assistants at all, I run my own Colt and Academy teams because that way I am sure the correct players are playing in the first XV and hence are being developed.

Scout:  Get a five star scout, this gives you a better chance of getting higher caliber Colt players.  This is essential.

Doctors and Physios:  Hire three five star Physios (1 for each team), and one Doctor.

Coaches: You can hire a maximum of 12 coaches, make sure their ALL five stars and hopefully you have the coaching bonus mentioned under the second paragraph of this guide (starting the game).  Hire 12 coaches like this:
The Dev Pot ((Developing Potential) coaches, should be hired with two of their being forwards and two of them being backs.  Ideally have one as a Lock, one has a Flanker, one as a Wing, as they help the development of players, and as and you have two of each of these types of players in a team it's a bonus.  The other back I'd recommend as a Outside Half if possible, as you really need a good 10 in the game.
1 Dev Pot (Developing potential) - 5 stars - Lock
2 Dev Pot (Developing potential) - 5 stars - Flanker
3 Dev Pot (Developing potential) - 5 stars - Wing
4 Dev Pot (Developing potential) - 5 stars - Outside Half
Other coaches:  Use this set up, to cover all areas of the coaching spectrum.
5 Attack Coach - 5 stars
6 Defense Coach - 5 stars
7 Fitness Coach - 5 stars
8 Gen Backs Coach  - 5 stars
9 Gen Forwards Coach  - 5 stars
10 Gen Kick Coach  - 5 stars
11 Set Piece Coach - 5 stars
12 Wts & Pow Coach  - 5 stars

Money and wage budgets:
Clubs in the Pro12 have a wage budget of £3.5m.
Clubs in England have a salary cap of £5.5m.
French clubs have a salary cap of £10m.
All top division clubs have a starting balance of: Easy £2m, Medium £1.5m, Hard £900k.  There isn't any difference in prize money for being in any different nations league competition, so other than the wage cap, there aren't really any advantages, as French and English clubs can't really generate more money than the Pro12 clubs.  They can however spend more on wages as a result of their increased salary cap.
One big difference is the Welsh Pro 12 teams and the English participate in the Welsh / English cup (LV Cup), the prize money is £1m a season as well as the extra revenue generates from games.
The wage cap for the Pro12 teams can turn out to be a REAL struggle in the long term.  Once you start developing your colts and academy players into World Class players retaining them becomes a huge issue due to the wage constraints.  If your very successful as a Pro12 club you will start having loads of money in the bank with nothing to spend it on, typically by the 5th to 6th season expect about £30m surplus in the bank, with nothing to spend it on.   You can't breach your salary cap for more than a few weeks, you can absorb the £300k a week fine easily but your board rating plummets and you get sacked.
It's better to offer long term contracts, and more signing on money, as you want to keep weekly wages low so it doesn't hurt your salary cap.

Wage Cap and running your Academy:
I don't hire any Assistants I prefer to play the Colt and Academy teams myself, so I am sure the correct players are always starting, so develop correctly.
Academy rules:
Minimum of 25 players in squad.
7 players MUST be front row forwards.
Three of which may be over 23 years old.
Basically when you promote a Maxed out World Class or International player from your Colts to your Academy, he will be classed as a National standard player, but his writing will be in Green (not black).  He will need to play in the academy team to develop, and reach his potential.  You CAN'T promote this player to your Main Squad, until he has reached his full potential.  This is the ONLY use of the academy, developing International and World class players.  All the other players that come through, put them straight into your Main squad, and if their not good enough to be in the match day squad, transfer list them when they turn 19 years old.  You'll be selling a conveyor belt of talent.  The key to it is to run your academy with professional level players, who are paid a wage of no more than £200 a week, so the bulk of your salary cap can be spent on retaining your developed World class players.

Consider having three players aged in their mid 30's in the academy squad.  These players have an almost full Experience bar and will help the Academy players develop.  Ideally have a Flanker (Fl), Winger (Wg) and Lock (Ll), (one of each), as you have two of these players in each 15 man team, so if you have a World class / International level Colt player come through who's a Lock, Flanker, or Wing the players won't overlap, and both can play in the same team, and in their correct position.  If their a star player (purple for professional level), and has a strong personality trait all the better!
If your managing in the Pro12 keeping under the wage cap can be a real pain, so here's a great way of aiding you.   As the Seasons pass you will develop a surplus of cash, your facilities will be fully upgraded and you'll be selling players from your Colts team for profit, hence why you get loads of money.  The key is to keep the Wage level low, so you have MORE money in your salary cap budget for World class players in your Main squad.  You do this by paying bonuses in contract negotiations, instead of increasing the weekly wage.  Bonuses and Transfer fees DO NOT count towards the salary cap budget.
Sell ALL the players in the academy, and replace them with "professional" level players off the transfer list.  The key is to look at the players with the lowest WAGES, basically £200 per week, try to look for star players (purple stars).  Also consider looking for players with quality mental attributes, for example, INT (Intimidating player), or INS (Inspirational player).
Remember all but three players have to be under the age of 23, so hiring 18 year old's on 5 year contracts works well.  In the players final season of his contract simply Terminate his contract, it's only pennies as his wage is low.
Method: If you click on the "Recruitment" word to the left of your game screen, then click: Players, Bids,  Senior Players, you visit the transfer list.  Under "Caliber" click "Professional", and you see a list of players.  Next click "Wage" till you have a list of all the players earning £200 a week.  As you sell your academy players you will want to replace them with these players, their good players, and their on cheap wages, also they can be star players and have personality traits that improve your team.  Don't worry about their nationality as their going to be in your Academy not Main squad.  Highlight a player you'd like to buy, and click "Make Offer to Buy" on the bottom left of the screen, and the negotiation window pops up.  Offering the players a 5 year deal should give you a 20% in the player agreement already.  Keep clicking on the "Payment to Club" until if gets to £234k, the player should have 76% agreement, assuming you have a 5 star Agent employed.   The wage NEEDS to remain at £200.  Now buy the player.  You'll notice you end up buying a lot of South Africans!
So there you go, sell all your Academy players over time and replace them with Professional level players, who are star players, with good presonality traits, and on £200 a week, to keep your salary cap as good as possible for the retention of your developed World class players.

The Colts team:
I don't hire any Assistants I prefer to play the Colt and Academy teams myself, so I am sure the correct players are always starting, so develop correctly.
Secondly you can hire a maximum 12 coaches, to get the maximum out of their coaching for the Colt, you need FOUR coaches who are listed as "Dev Pot", which stands for Developing potential.  When you hire Four Dev Pot coaches, take a look at the left of the screen, click "Training", then "Players" at the bottom, under Colts, the coaches should be four, and the training quality 100.  Ideally have the five star coaches training positions as Lock, Flanker, Wing, and Outside half, as they three first positions have two of each player in a team.  It's also better to have two forwards and two backs coaches in a team, for balance.
There is a minimum amount of Colts (seven normally) you must push through into your academy each season, though the maximum is twelve, and twelve is when you should aim for!  This is where you will make your money in future seasons.  Get their development right and you won't need to worry about saving up for the best players, you will produce your own and sell loads on.
Colts players are 17 and 18 years old, when a player reached 18 this is the last season he can be in the Colts, at the end of the season you can either give him a full time contract or he will leave the club and disappear from the game (apparently all these hundreds of colts players go to rugby league in the game).  Obviously if a player is 17, he will stay in the Colts for the next season until he reaches 18.
When you start the game go to the "Contracts" area on the game screen, then click "Colts Contracts".  Click on "Pot  Cal", (potential caliber), this basically tells you how much potential the player has to develop, anything below national level is a poor and those players should be released.   Immediately highlight all the players below "National" standard and click "Release Player" located on the bottom left, or at least release as many as you can starting with the "Amateur" ones, then the "Semi-Pro" etc, keep going until you get a message telling you, you have reached the minimum amount of players allowed.  Though obviously start with the weakest caliber of player (amateur).
Every four weeks you may do a recruitment drive and hire new colts, this costs a small amount of money.  So basically get rid of the rubbish ones and try and get better players in.
Tip:  Save the game AFTER releasing the poor level players, then do the recruitment drive.  Have a look what players you have recruited, and possibly reload the game if it's a poor batch of players.  Keep an eye on your world class players for example, you can only pick one of most positions in a team (one Outside half, one Full back etc).  I had an example where I had two outside centers together one season, they were competing for starting spots in the Colts, then the Academy and then the Main team, this hindered their development, and damaged their moral.  World class players cost a fortune, and take a huge chunk out of your wage budget, so make sure you don't have more than one in each position (with the exception of wings, locks and flankers, of which you have two per team).  If you have a great players who getting old (aged 33+), or are very weak in a certain position, then it's worth reloading the game a few times to help you along, so you have a replacement coming through.  Basically you want World Class, international, with the rest being National standard players, nothing else, that's the aim, so keep an eye on your recruitment and get as many national level standard players coming through.
On the left of the screen if you click on, "Colts", then "Players", you see the squad list, now click "Pot Cal" (potential caliber).  As time progresses each week, the grey bar will increase, when it gets to the end of the bar, you will also see the words "MAX" (maximum) on the end of the bar.  Leave your players in the Colts squad until they get to "Max".
If any World Class or International standard players reach "MAX"during the season, then promote them immediately to the Academy, so they start to develop in the Academy as early as possible.  Note, while in the Academy, these players will have Green writing, and be ranked National level, but it will increase, and you won't be able to promote them to the Main Squad until their development is complete, though they may still get called up to the National team.
Do not offer contracts to "National" level players until the end of the season.  Offer all Colts players a five year contract, then the maximum possible "Player Bonus", before raising the "Weekly Wage" to 75% (with a five star Agent) to get them to sign, this keep the wages as low as possible for the salary cap.
As stated earlier, you have a maximum of twelve Colts promotions a season, at the end of the season select the better National level 18 years old players by VALUE, remember 17 year old players will still be in the Colts next season, and you can't sell a player until he is 19 years old, so offer contracts only to those players who are 18 years old.  It;s a long way of doing it, but if you save the game, then offer as many 18 year old maxed out Colt players contracts as you can, then click onto the Academy, player screen and have a loot at their value and attributes.  Make a note of those players, then reload the game and look at other players, this way you can select the most skilled and valuable from your potential pool of players.  Note forget about any personality traits as they come randomly when offering a contract, so if you reload the game and offer the player a contract again he won't have that trait.

Colts Transfer List:
At the start (first week) of each season, look on the Colts transfer list for "International" level players who are new in the game (Left hand side screen panel - Recruitment, Bids, Colts Players).  You can buy them to develop in your Colts team.    In the long term this can help you a lot over the course of a couple of seasons.  Ideally concentrate on the 17 year old ones as you have more time to develop them, as a 17 year old player will be in the Colts team the following season.  Offer them the largest "Players Bursary" you can, then increase the "Payment to Club" option will the players agreement box goes to 75% (assuming you have a five star agent).  Don't increase the "New Weekly Wage" area, as you want the wages as low as possible for the salary cap budget.  You'll be looking at an outlay of about £1.4m per player, but in the long term it's a great way to get good players as when their ready to be offered a contract to join the Academy you'll be able to give them a five year contract on much lower wages, than if you bought him later on in his career.

Facilities:
Upgrade your stadium at the earliest possible opportunity, this increases your revenue and pays for itself quickly.  The Center of Excellence needs to be kept an eye on also, as your going to be bringing through World Class level players and you need to be able to support them.
