That was the personal choice of the players. That is what started the war between the regions and the WRU.

Their links provided a basis but they had huge holes in what they were claiming and made leaps from what they provided to what they were claiming

The media were bound to ask their view on it, so asked Hines.
Yep, won't be long before it closed
Still, we will need Chunky to push the next one to closing. No doubt he will be back

Anyway, why have I gone down this road again ? I have been diverted by marty's wriggling.
The point is,Marty, you have admitted that the refs in Ireland come under the same organisation as the provinces in Ireland. If you admit this, then you must admit there is a conflict of interest.

After last week I'd say you're right about the French, Scarlet.
Pape innocently asks O'Brien if he's into 'fisting' and O'Brien says "You mean this?" Pape gasps: "No, not what I mean" and drops to his knees.

I've said all along there will be conflicts irregardless of the status of Irish refs, if they ref at all in the league someone will say how one decision against a Welsh/Scottish/Italian team benefitted an Irish team, the same with refs of other nationalities
If you go through the Pro12 and world rugby you will see it is incestuous and riddled with conflicts
If any ref is being paid, they are paid to ref within the rules correct? Would that not counter the conflict? Or is it the perception you want rid off?

Yes, seen the tweets. Jones is slightly unbalanced, but good comedy value. How some of these guys can describe themselves as sports journos, I don't know. Would barely pass as writers for the Beano.
On second thoughts, that isn't fair on the Beano. A fine publication in its day.

The Beano of my day would be frowned upon in the modern day. Every issue used to come with a little pack of free sweets.

Well us Irish wouldn't eat them for fear of the unknown ingredient from Jones - but would everyone frown at such largesse shown by modern publications?

I know, Scarlets, the health conscious society would be up in arms. The free toys might be frowned upon as well. Not so sure that a free set of clangers holds the same appeal with todays kids though. More like a free XBOX

I think that would only work if when you bought sweets your got a free times, as the sweets would be the higher value object.
The comics the kids hassle me for are usually stuffed with 'free' toys, but at bloody £5-10 a pop you would expect so.

I have the Marvel comics collection on like that, when all the books are in a row the spines make a lovely picture. Oh except they don't come in order so the picture has gaps in it. And worse my book shelf is not long enough anyway. And the real worst, Mrs Spidey has worked out the cost so far........

Come to think of it, the only WRU employee that plays for the regions is Sam Warburton. Is this what is being alluded to ? As I know the regions were all staunchly against this way of paying for players.
Is that true? He's on an NDC, the same as the others now isn't he?

No the WRU pay all his wages as far as I am aware, he was the first to take the contract. Unless something has changed since the shoite storm that he caused after signing it.

So the WRU pay 60% of most of the contracts but the players aren't employees but the regions who pay 40% are their employers? Makes sense

The Wales captain, 25, was the only player to take up a Welsh Rugby Union central contract while the governing body and the four regions were involved in a lengthy dispute.
A £60m deal ended the row on 28 August.
RRW stated: "Regional Rugby can confirm that Sam moved to a dual contract at the same time as the new Rugby Services Agreement (RSA) was signed."

As I have said earlier on this thread, the regions invest a lot of money into getting these players to where they are, this is why the WRU pay 60% and the regions pay 40%. The regions have already spent a fortune on them, why should they pay the Lions share ?

Come off it Lord.
Gatland virtually says every year that he has to build the players he selects up from scratch each and everytime they come back to International. He says they're never fit or sharp enough.
So - he's the Welsh coach - he has to pick a team - he has to take most of his players from what's there. He's built most of the players that play International - himself. Moulded them into what he wants, not what the Regions wanted. So it's WRU money, science and conditioning expertise that is turning out the Internationals.... not Regions doing it for themselves.

As a Scarlets fan, it seems that this has been something that is an ever present of the Gatland reign and has seen a few of our boys forced into early retirement (Stoddard in particular)

I don't think Stodds had a single Welsh camp experience without picking up an injury, it just started to get beyond a joke. Player gets injured, rushed back to the welsh camp, player gets injured again, has op during the regional season, and gets rushed back to the welsh camp. Poor Eli Walker is starting to look like he is going to end up the same way too, as if memory serves, he has picked up injuries in ever welsh training camp he has been to as well.

This. Compound lifts plus high reps equals injury.

It seems none of the three big Leagues are Stone. Is that not the conclusion?
Did not the Pro12 Nations last longer than the supposedly much better, much harder, much faster, much more serious League in England though?
So yeah - not nearly hard or fast enough a league. But still seems to churn out more battle ready players at International

Pro12 has to be much better than AP, and better than the super rich T14. Pro12 rocks
...maybe one day the AP will catch up. Who knows?

No, it would be more correct, going by your reasoning, that the AP and T14 have to catch up with the Pro12. I don't actually believe this. I'm just following your line of reasoning. I don't actually believe the SH sides are much further ahead of the NH sides, with the exception of NZ. All of us have some way to go before we can close that gap.

Aren't there still T14 players at the RWC though? So they must be better.
As for the B&I League, it seems to be one of the suggestions to improve NH rugby that has popped up in a few different places since the RWC exits. Much like Summer Rugby, or restructuring the season so it runs club then euro then six nations. A miracle cure that will see RWC19 having all NH teams in the semi-finals
