AO 2016 Day 5
First topic message reminder :
Don't know where laverfan has gone but I'll step in

Kyrgios v Berdych looks very intriguing!
Seppi gets his chance to make another shock v Djokovic; I'm not holding my breath
Some women are playing too.
But the big event for me is whether Federer can beat Dimitrov and become the first man to reach 300 Grand Slam match wins. Given he's one of only 6 men to pass 200 that's quite impressive!

G'night BB. Thanks for the company.
G'morn LKv2. Time for some shut-eye. Not impressed with the Old Man. Abysmal BP conversion.

If he can still win ugly and unconvincingly for his fans it must be a good thing to an extent.
For the game, shows what a gulf in class there is between the top and the rest. It's alarming.

The old Federer would have won this match in 3 easy sets against his flaky opponent. His ground game has declined so badly and still able to ease through the first 3 rounds. Usually Goffin has no chance but now...

Re: AO 2016 Day 5
so can anyone see beyond Djokovic for the title? for that matter, can anyone see beyond him for most of the GS this year? he seems to be in the kind of form Federer had for a couple of years, a while back.

I think that this year may be Murray's year to win in Australia.coolpixel wrote:so can anyone see beyond Djokovic for the title? for that matter, can anyone see beyond him for most of the GS this year? he seems to be in the kind of form Federer had for a couple of years, a while back.
I'm pretty sure he'll make the final and I just can't see him losing 5 finals at the same event.
In fact, does that have any precedent?

HM, unfortunately i have a feeling Murray will not be winning many more slams and i doubt he can match Djokovic's current form.
this is not to put him down, but for one, he's too inconsistent - this is a perennial problem.
for another, and this is more important, i think he has motivation problems, now that his wife is expecting. he has gone on record saying that tennis will not be more important than his child.

Well, that is only up to a point because the reason I like Federer is the level and style of play. I'm not a fan to such an extent of the man that I would enjoy watching him win ugly (at least not regularly).legendkillarV2 wrote:If he can still win ugly and unconvincingly for his fans it must be a good thing to an extent.

Re: AO 2016 Day 5
Incidentally, I think the Open Era GS match win record is held by Martina with 306, so yet another cake should be served up to Federer this year.
I must say thought that records which can be achieved by beating lower players can't be quite the same, even though they are obviously stood on top of so many wins against the best guys.

The biggest problem for Murray is that the aggressive forehand he used in big finals 2012-2013 is completely gone it's back to just bunting the ball in and you simply won't win GS' playing that way. Coupled with this kind of spinnier "safer" serve he uses hasn't worked against Djokovic or Federer recently, in fact it's completely broken down. I'd love to see him win but if you struggle to put mid court balls away you aren't going to win against Djokovic.

Hope berdych destroys Kyrios, he is such a turkey. Talks the big game and has achieved nothing, like that other clown Tomic. I also hate this 'oh they are so young etc.' no excuses for their pathetic behaviour on and off court.
On a seperate note, dimitrov falls short in another big match. Nice guy at least but not fulfilling his potential

Dimitrov hit 15 non service winners in 4 sets, 50 odd unforced errors, absolutely horrible performance.

Re: AO 2016 Day 5
So, as the draw starts to develop I'm thinking.....
* interesting match between pusher & Djokovic in the next round.
* Federer v Berdych starts to look a probability in the qtr
* Federer, as it turned out, had a pretty tought draw after Rd 1
* 3rd quarter seems to have opened up easily for Stan
* Murray will have one competitive match before the semi, probably Ferrer. he'll be hoping for his Bunny Lopez to surprise them.
Djokovic v Federer / Berdych in semi 1, Stan v Murray looks nailed on for the 2nd

Re: AO 2016 Day 5
"Interesting" is rarely the right word to describe a Djokovic v Simon match!
Assuming Djokovic makes the QF, I think there may well be a decent match against whoever wins out of Nishikori or Tsonga. Both players, in their different ways, are capable of giving Djoko at least a scare.
Murray looks a cert for the SF but I think Raonic has a decent chance against Stan.
Fed has an odd draw. No match looks a huge danger in itself but the sequence has the potential to be tricky. In the sense that he may have an 80% chance of winning each one but 80% x 80% x 80% ends being around a 50/50 chance of winning all three.
(that's the Dimi-Goffin-Berdych sequence by the way. I'm not saying Fed has an 80% change against Djokovic!)

Raonic has improved to the point where he does indeed have a (more than ?) decent chance v Stan ; not least because Stan's 'non-spectacular' days can sometimes be very ordinary, as we have seen over the years.
Agree too re Fed v Djoko (assuming it comes to pass ....). Fed's chances are a lot less than 80%, sure !! At least his 4-6 h2h across their last ten matches is a better return than anyone else has been managing v Novak. But of course five sets remains the ultimate challenge.....

Stand up Mats Wilander and Simon Reed. The nominations have closed, you've taken the award early.
Funny, I came on here to comment that Feds decline in foot speed is becoming more and more evident.. especially to the forehand side. It's degrading his ground game big time. Inevitable of course with athletic age, and he's done well to compensate- but all this "playing better than ever" "quick as ever" is either people with amnesia or pure "commentator hyperbole" like you said.
That being said- or maybe it's the haze of watching tennis at 2 in the morning here- but I don't think it was as bad a performance as some are saying. Patchy sure, but there was some high level stuff there and some of his half volleys and pickups are beyond difficult to pull off and he made it look easy.
I do get though that he would need to step it up big time to have a chance at Djokovic. That's the problem- Fed can hit the level, but it doesn't look like he can sustain it anymore for long enough. Amazing he's still right there though, and I have a hard time seeing anyone take him out before semis.

That is a worry. Though admittedly Nish and Ronic are 25 and 26, so it not quite as bad as it sounds.
Fed looked fair good to me. The main worry apart from dropping a set he shouldn't have, is hes looking a little easier to push around in a rally than before, which is absolutely fine for Goffin, but he does NOT want a long battle against Berdych

Re: AO 2016 Day 5
If Fed serves like he did on the first match, he can beat Djoko too.
He can't keep that serve every match, but getting to play Djoko on the SF, will be less pressure for Fed than on a Final, knowing that he can probably beat who ever is on the other side on the Final

Miami and IW would generally be more favourable. Effectively most courts where Fed generally isn't getting far enough to meet Novak any more!
