I had a bottle of that stuff last year! I was trying to remember the flavour so that I could go look for it again. Thanks for the mental refresher, Truss.

The Duchess of Cambridge a talented photographer? My arse. Family snaps with access to plenty of time, masses of money for state-of-the-art kit and loads of touring the planet. What a wonderful talent she truly is. My cat could take pictures of similar quality with all of the above.

But would the Royal Photographic Society see any lovely publicity potential in having your talented cat become a member, navy?
Thinking about it, the idiots should indeed see the publicity merit in having your cat become a member instantly.  It's not often you hear a cat ask one to say "Cheese", but I'd suspect a lot of mice have paid a terrible price falling for the trick.

Clearly not (and it's fine that they see such for that Middleton woman), but is it really necessary for the vomitsome nonsense about how wonderful a photographer she is? No. Just ask her to act as a Parton or some such and have done.

Yes, because elections unfailingly produce intelligent, altruistic, incorruptible pillars of a Nation don't they? By the same token, just because our Head of State inherited the role via some old-fashioned route, doesn't mean she's a bad egg does it?

Wonderful irony of slating someone who inherited their wealth and status......by putting forward someone who inherited their wealth and status....... picard that's before we get onto that 'elected' person being a racist misogynist Russian patsy.....

Wasn't talking about your wealth or status, talking about your boy Trump who is every bit as privileged and deserving/undeserving as the Queen. Basically identical save the blatant and undisputed racism & misogyny.

Queen's role and political status (head of state etc) is entirely ceremonial, so again equates fine with Trump pre & post Presidency (his whole life).

Because mayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyybe it's nigh on impossible to be gifted 40 million in the first place?

Just a thought.

You know, an idea. A concept. Perhaps a reality, for 99.999% of the planet's inhabitants at least, save Trump and the Queen pretty much.

Have remembered one difference though - the Queen's finances are transparent and she contributes to the public coffers. Trump on the other hand is the first president/candidate to refuse to disclose his tax returns (with zero legitimate reason) and has reputedly not paid tax since the early 90s.

Nice.

but as beautiful (Not keen myself) as his wife may be, she is clearly not with him for his looks, and certainly not for his personality, and his kids all remind me of the Kevin McCallister's brothers on Home Alone, bunch of little troutsniffers.

You don't know their relationship Scott...

"Clearly" can't be substantiated....They met in 1998...When he was 51.

As for his kids they clearly love their Dad..They were very protective of him.

I don't mind Trump being president actually. Least it wasn't Clinton

He has that Justin Bieber effect I guess

A successful person who everyone loves to hate

Can't say I'm a fan of Trump's political views or Bieber's music...but I certainly don't hate either of them for making something of their lives and a lot of money

Where I am from the moment anyone tries to do anything like run a pub or open up a shop everyone is quick to say it will never work or if it does work they say it's no good

I remember getting promoted in my old job and hardly anyone from the department I left wished me well and some even snubbed me in that "Bet he think he is better than us now" way

People hate success and for once in a blue moon I agree with Truss that envy gets you nowhere

I think I'm starting to warm to Trump, if for no other reason than he should at least guarantee 4 years of interesting headlines. He's also dropped his raving lunatic act from the election campaign and is starting to sound like a vaguely reasonable person.

Love him or hate him, you won't be able to ignore him (without great effort anyway).

Maybe its something to do with most of our politicians being so bland, as to be almost invisible. The closest we have to Trump is Monsieur Farage.

Wasn't getting personal?!? That just your token response to your paper thin argument getting poked through??

His Presidency win was impressive I'll give him that. Funnier given you spent the entire time telling the board that Clinton had it sewn up whilst I put money on Trump....sadly not at only a tenth of the odds of 50/1 but still a nice win.

Some people do get a better start than others. The hypocrisy is where you slate one person for the better start but elevate another.

Isn't easy unless you chucked cash into a mutual tracker....

Wealth accummulation is exponential not straight line. Alan Sugar's net worth is vastly more impressive as he came from nothing and no inheritance or wealthy connections to sort it all out for him.

When Trump went bust (like lots of people in the early 90s) he just screwed all his creditors and employees, went back to daddy's country club and got them all to bail him out, filed at stratospheric tax loss that helped him avoid tax for the next 25 years.

Yeh, really a guy to look up too......

Have you seen John Redwoods piece in the FT Toppy? There's a man who needs to be hogtied to the back of a bus and dragged around London.

Haven't got a subscription to read the article. Something about sticking with US and UK stocks?

In fairness, all our major indices are rallying pretty bloody strongly at the moment!

Personally I'd be shorting UK but not really my expertise. That said, last summer did hear from lot of major middle eastern investors that if Trump won they'd be shifting capital (new & old) from the US into the UK.

God only knows, tbh......

Mr Redwood has a dog in the fight. His hedge fund is reported to have made £200 million from betting that the policies he lobbies for would crash sterling. I suspect he has calculated how he might personally benefit were the economy also to crash.

Probably. Always plenty of people happy to profit from misery.

Going to be an interesting, and rocky, few years....

The gist of the article is about Tariffs and how Europe will have to give us Tariff free access so it might be that he's just an idiot "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" but nothing in particular about NTB or the research. Here's a comment from one reader "DLM" - the FT subscription is worth it for the comments alone.

"I hesitate to grapple with a fellow of All Souls but this interpretation of events comes as if from a modern embodiment of Candide!

Cameron asked for controls/an emergency brake on FoM and was flatly denied by Merkel and the wider EU, whose response was totally consistent with every signal ever broadcast by them on the matter up to that date and since that date. And yet the writer interprets this set of events as "evidence" that Cameron asked for too little! As if the writer had a window into the souls of EU leaders and can divine - not only in the absence of all evidence, but indeed contrary to all evidence - that they were bluffing all along... And it is this kind of "may the force be with you" thinking about the relative negotiating positions of the UK and the EU which is clearly informing the misguided idea that we can control EU migration post Brexit and still trade freely...

If you want to leave at all costs, at least have the decency, when the true costs emerge, to stick to your position. It's a pretty shabby form of backtracking for a leaver to say, now, that the price of leaving has gone up (the subconscious suggestion is that you feel the true cost is too much, but you'll hotly deny that) because "Cameron cocked up the UK's negotiating position". If this article is an attempt to set up a post-facto blame game that Brexit would have been fine if the pre-negotiations hadn't been mishandled, that would be to demonstrate as much moral fibre as a wet bogey.

As for the last sentence of this article it's such a poor gloss on the real issues that I am sure the writer must be a little ashamed of it. The idea that, for Germany or France, providing tariff free trade for the UK (i.e. providing a 'free pass' to a leaver) is more important to them than for the UK to have tariff free trade with the EU, which represents some 44% of the UK's export market, is fantastically naive. My local off-license sells more wine to me than I sell to it - it does not follow that I can negotiate pricing with them. What is more, for the rest of the EU, and for Germany in particular, the integrity of the EU is overwhelmingly more important than the relatively minor irritant of even a material deterioration in the terms of trade with the UK. For the UK, on the other hand, a material deterioration in the terms of trade with the EU would (I should say will) represent a generational economic shock.

Bear the following in mind - Germany has the biggest trade deficit of any EU country with the UK - around £25-30bn per annum. And yet the UK represents only around 8% of Germany's export market. So - even for Germany - the calculus is incredibly clear. Would they prefer, on one hand, to suffer a mild deterioration in the terms of trade with an 8% export market, or, on the other hand, to upset the integrity of the EU, on which project Germany's entire post-War economic prosperity has been built? Not very difficult, really, is it?"

Got this late last year then subscribed properly after David Allen Green's coverage of the court case - it was brilliant - though he is a bit precious

Boring... dull as dishwater...charisma free Meryl Streep gets another acting award I see..

She gets awards chucked at her the same way Tracey Emin and Damien Hurst get artistic praise for any old crap they turn out....Still struggling with an unmade bed with an ashtray on it being groundbreaking ...But what do I know ??

Apparently when Tracey Emin threatened to move to France at the last election Marine Le Pen rose ten points in the polls and funding for ISIS tripled at the same time.

Give actresses that light up the screen prizes...

Such as?

Personally, I think Streep's pretty good. Given that man-child Trump a chance to further act as an immature pillock on Twitter as well.
