Fixtures

Ealing Trailfinders (9) vs. Jersey Reds (2)
Two weeks in and Ealing are still yet to win.  A home defeat to Yorkshire Carnegie was followed last week by losing a large lead away at Cornish Pirates.  Jersey after a seven try romp away at Richmond in round one made it two from two last time out, winning a tight encounter with Bedford 14-9 to sit second in the table on points difference.  For Jersey this will be seen as an expected start to the season, given the strength of their squad and they will be looking to continue to put pressure on the other sides at the top of the table.  Ealing on the other hand may feel that they have underachieved so far, and will be looking to put that right on their home patch this time out.
Prediction:  Jersey to extend their winning streak to three in a high scoring game.

London Welsh (4) vs. Yorkshire Carnegie (3)
London Welsh, after their late defeat in round one, put fellow exiles London Scottish to the sword this week to pick up a try bonus point win.  Carnegie made it two from two hanging on to beat Nottingham at home as the visitors missed a last minute conversion that would have tied the game.  Both squads have players with top flight experience and both will have genuine aspirations of making the play offs this year.  Based on the scores in their matches this season both know the way to the tryline, and both have had issues defending their own.  this one may well come down to who sharpens up in defence the most this weekend.
Prediction:  Welsh to inflict Yorkshire's first defeat of the season in another high scoring game.

Bedford Blues (10) vs. London Irish (1)
Bedford will be disappointed with their position in the table having lost their opening two games.  conversely Irish have won both of their opening fixtures and will feel comfortable with their start to the season.  having been by all accounts poor in their opening loss to the Cornish Pirates, Bedford put up a far stronger showing last time out away at Jersey, and were in the game until the very end.  Back at home on their famous sloping pitch, they will be looking to improve again to be the first team to take London Irish down this season.  Irish after a solid win over Doncaster in week one, notched up six tries against Richmond last time out, but will want to put in a performance this week which shows they can maintain focus for the full 80 minutes.  They will also want to win their first game on the road to lay down another marker, with away wins having been rarer than hens teeth in recent years.
Prediction:  Bedford to keep the game close for an hour but Irish to have a little bit too much for them by the end.

Richmond (12) vs. Doncaster Knights (8)
Richmond have been handed possibly the toughest opening possible, facing three of the play off favourites in succession.  Knights picked up their first points of the season last time out with a comfortable derby win over Rotherham.  Despite shipping 13 tries in two matches, Richmond have shown that they are no mugs and will play with great heart and spirit along with having good skill levels.  Their best hope of wins will be in good conditions in open games were both teams go at it fast and loose.  Doncaster you suspect will look to bring their power game first up and only open up having won the right to do so.
Prediction:  Doncaster Knights will have too much for Richmond this week and will head home with a try bonus point.

Rotherham Titans (7) vs. London Scottish (11)
After opening up with a try bonus point win against London Welsh, Rotherham were beaten by local rivals Doncaster last time out.  Scottish followed up their opening defeat to Nottingham, by leading London Welsh 9-0 early on, before shipping 5 tries to lose 9-36.  Both sides at the moment look to be integrating new players after lots of squad changes in the summer, making this a difficult one to call.
Prediction:  Rotherham to be too strong at home in another open game.

Nottingham Rugby (6) vs. Cornish Pirates (5)
Nottingham followed up a close win in round one with a very close defeat last week, missing a last minute conversion to tie the game away at Yorkshire Carnegie.  Pirates followed up their opening round win by coming from a long way behind to draw with Ealing Trailfinders last time out.  These are two teams with few star names in their squads, but who look to be well organised and will likely finish mid table come the end of the season.
Prediction:  Hardest game of the round to call, but home advantage to swing it in close fought affair.

No wonder Jersey are doing so well, they have Regan King as their centre. What a signing he was! A massive loss to the Scarlets even at his age.

At 36 he's probably lost a bit of pace, but has always had a great rugby brain, which will still be there.  He could definitely be a big player for them this season.

Close between Yorkshire and Irish there, I imagine it'll stay that way for most of the season unless Irish go undefeated.

I can't see us going undefeated. It's been evident that we are everybody else's cup final. I'll settle for finishing top 2 and winning the play offs.

Yea, the Championship is a lot tougher with the extended play offs now as well, no point ragging yourselves all season just to be knackered for those finals. Just ask Bristol!
