You're gonna struggle to keep this going JHM !
Although ..... I seem to remember saying something similar during another Slam - and you came up with the goods in impressive fashion.
The challenge is on.

I have no doubt JHM can keep it up; he never failed before. NS, you not bad yourself either.

I'm sure Bogbrush, Emancipator or Jahu will be along any minute to tell us the French Open should be boycotted this year.

Last time Federer was not playing at RG ...... The Spice Girls and Boyzone were in the 'pop charts' (do pop charts even exist these days ....??). Clinton was fessing up on his dalliance with Monica Lewinsky.

Yes it was last Millennia when Fed didn't appear at a slam.
Fed works in epochs not poxy little eras like the other players.

Troicki v Dimitrov looks the stand-out match today. All the other seeds should proceed in relatively routine fashion.

Given Dimis diminished form of late you have to fancy Viktor for the victory.

Quality match between Kyrgios and Cecchinato so far. First set tiebreak about to start.

Kyrgios takes it 8-6. Very impressive as he had some sort of warning from the umpire and then had two set points saved at 6-4 before coming up with two stunning points. Should be plain sailing from now.

Kyrgios also takes the 2nd set tiebreak 8-6, this time saving two set points from 4-6. Very impressive as Cecchinato has played at an incredible level.

Re: French Open Day 1 - It's Albot started, and not without Riske.
I assume Marco Cecchinato is playing well above his usual level: he is ranked at 124 and is someone who spends most of his time on the Challenger level circuit. Clay is his preferred surface - all of his ITF Futures and ATP Challenger success has been on the clay. His career ATP World Tour Level stats are won 3 matches lost 17 matches. He is 23 years 8 months old.

Kyrgios breaks for the first time to lead 7-6 7-6 3-2. Cecchinato has been the story here playing some great stuff. I wouldn't be too handy lumping praise on Kyrgios as it is a match against a player in a dip in form. Besides a lot is expected of Kyrgios now and if this were one of the other top seeds struggling like Kyrgios it would be getting labelled a nothing special sort of display. Cecchinato looks mentally shot now.

Only if you hadn't watched the match. Cecchinato has played well above his ranking and Kyrgios has held himself together exceptionally in a couple of tough situations. I can't see him losing before R4 with that attitude and serving level.

By comparison, Paire is now 2 sets all with Albiot - despite leading 52-14 in winners!

Re: French Open Day 1 - It's Albot started, and not without Riske.
BS I watched all of the match. Cecchinato did play well above himself but his record this year is dire for a reason. Inability to get over the line seems an issue he needs to address to arrest his slide. Kyrgios won in three tight sets but as some are now painting him as a potential dark horse and people tipping him as a future slam winner then all that can be said about it was that it got the job done.

Play suspended with just under half of today's matches completed. Fingers crossed for more play later on or else the schedules could descend into chaos given that the forecast is not great for tomorrow or Tuesday.

Actually Tuesday looks set fair but tomorrow looks like it could be a wash-out.

"All the other seeds" - depressing that Troicki is the seeded player in this match.Born Slippy wrote:Troicki v Dimitrov looks the stand-out match today. All the other seeds should proceed in relatively routine fashion.

I expect the usual roof discussions to get kicked off, when rain stops the play.

Rain! I am not sure whether this is true, but I was once told that rain favours the seeds.

Watson is a frustrating player. She's played some really nice tennis in this match (33 winners to 12) but is a break down in the 3rd. I have no confidence in her winning despite the fact she said clearly the better player.

And that concludes play for today.
Tomorrow's forecast is even worse with intermittent rain throughout the day with better weather forecast for Tuesday.

Order of play tomorrow I'd say seals it that Murray won't play tomorrow. He is scheduled to be down last on Philippe-Chatrier on a day where rain is forecast for much of the day.

Good win for Kyrgios, played real clutch tennis on the big points when it mattered against an inspired opponent. This is the sort of match that could have easily have turned into a 5 set dogfight - Kyrgios did well to win it in straight sets and ought to be fine getting to the 2nd week.
