Multi-Format Point system Empty Multi-Format Point system

ICC is reviewing the possibility of a multi-format point system.
It's a great idea I think...and given the immediate support from across the spectrum, it does appear it will go throuhg.

the idea of a series winner and also a No-1 based on multi-format points will ensure Windies and BD take their tests more seriously and like of Aus and Eng don't field a second string side in limited over games as a side show

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci-icc/content/story/1000937.html

The ICC is set to discuss the possibility of a points-based structure for international cricket at its forthcoming board meeting in Dubai.

ESPNcricinfo understands that the idea of giving points for each victory in a bilateral tour across all formats - as pioneered in the Women's Ashes since 2013 - then translating the overall winner into a "championship" table will be one of the options debated amid wider discussions on how to bring greater context to bilateral series

Multi-Format Point system Empty Re: Multi-Format Point system

Can't see this making much headway , at least in the short term.

Not sure the average cricket follower is all that invested in "rankings" , etc , compared with the results of individual contests. So imposing another set of points may not have much impact ...and it surely can't have any effect in terms of qualifying teams for World Cup events since the formats will presumably have to be kept separate.

End of the day it will produce another trophy to be handed out at the end of a multi -format tour ; but I rather doubt anyone will care too much who "wins" an overall points score in comparison with who won the Test series embedded in it...
Recent example : England 2-1 over SA in Tests (cue much rejoicing/ wrist slashing in both countries) SA come back from a poor start to dominate limited over contests ( home fans happy , but still concerned over their long game issues ; tourists disappointed but most fans probably feeling the main aim was achieved).......

And now we tally the points: Eng 2x4 plus 2x2 ...12 points.
SA 1x4 plus 5x2...14 !!!
So SA "win" overall. (unless you allow , say , five points for a Test ) But would that really change anyone's perception of the tour much ?

You can argue it would give more meaning to the last t20 (in the aforementioned example) . True to a point I guess. But not likely to cause national selectors to imperil their player management strategies by forcing all their main players to play all matches to the point of exhaustion - and nor should it. Would be lovely to see full strength teams all the time ; but it just isn't practical. It doesn't happen in football either - even professional athletes have to rest at times or the burn out rate would be ridiculous.

This plan may happen. But I don't see it as a big addition to the international game.

Hopefully Sri Lanka and Pakistan will say no. The points system for the women worked because they play so few Tests. Two in 2014 and one in 2015.

Indeed . It makes complete sense for the women , because of their limited number of matches. But rather less so for an already crowded men's programme...

weighted averages it will be I am sure....

3,2,1 point respectively for test-ODI-T20

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket/2016/04/29/ecb-receives-agreement-from-summer-tourists-to-introduce-points/

It looks like it's going ahead. 3 points for a Test, 2 points for an ODI or 20/20. Tests are 5 days and a 20/20 three hours. Tests should get 5 points! Grrrrr. furious

That would be 9 points for the 3 Tests against SL and 12 points for the white ball stuff.

What a truly terrible idea. Massively flawed because there is no consistent mix of match types on any tour, plus increasingly the formats are played by specialists

Under this system England would actually have lost the SA tour. So it would be "sorry Stuart, that bowling spell in the 3rd Test was all well and good but some guy slogged a few boundaries in a T20 so hard luck"

I predict this will come in for a couple of series, prove to be terrible and then quietly swept under the carpet alongside ODI substitutes

Broad 19 at 24.21 (6)

well in due course.......tests will come down to 2 points also.

the principal being 2 points for each international win

and that would make it easy for to split the draw also 1 point each Very Happy

Someone suggested 5 points for a Test, 1 point for an ODI and half a point for a 20/20. Laugh

They haven't sorted out a points system yet and we play the first Test on Thursday.

They have come up with another crazy idea in the meantime. Choosing players from MVP rankings. So do you play a 40 year old? How do you tell from a computer how good a fielder a player is? Of course the games will be played in the UAE because the next WC is going to be held in England. Headscratch
