Yes, I've been quite a few times, this is actually the first year I haven't been for a long time.

It's a lot of fun, there's only one match court, but you can also watch players on the practice courts and get to chat to them if that interests you. I've never been as late as Saturday – in years gone by they used to struggle to get players to play as late as that as it's so close to Wimbledon, and sometimes people who had signed up dropped out before then. I found Tuesday to Thursday were the best days, but it might be different now as they do seem to get a larger pool of players. The bigger names might have moved on to the Wimbledon practice courts by now, but it should still be fun.

The whole event has got bigger, and I rather miss the old intimacy of it, which is why I decided to give it a miss this year. Years ago hardly anyone had even heard of it, they didn't even have a website (you had to book tickets by phone), let alone streaming. The nice thing about it then was that players would wander around, do their warm-ups out in the pretty surroundings, and be happy to chat to you. A lot of the patrons wouldn't recognise most of the players anyway! Actually, that's still true, you need to expect to be surrounded by people who aren't tennis fans, it's just part of the summer social scene for them. Doesn't bother me, but I know some tennis fans find it irritating.

Anyway, you can still get close to the players (if that takes your interest), it's just not quite as relaxed as it used to be. The tennis should be good anyway, and you find out which players are natural-born entertainers, and which aren't!

Thank, ListenUp. That's really helpful and much appreciated.

I'm only casually interested in tennis (probably a capital offence to say that on this board! Wink ) but my wife is a keen follower. Bought the tickets at the end of last year as 'something different' for a Christmas present to her after hearing a bit about it. For various reasons, Saturday was the only day we could make.

I'll let you know how we get on.
