7/20 against Hamps today giving him championship figures so far this season of 400+ runs at 45 and 45 wickets at 17.
Could Woakes be a future test great for England?

As a Warwickshire fan myself I may be slightly biased...but this guy is better than Steven Finn, and also is capable of contributing decent runs down the order.

Has been truly brilliant this season and if he can keep the kind of form he has shown today up then it is purely a matter of time before he gets his chance at the highest level.

He is far less expensive than Finn, and has a better record at county level of late.

Stop this bias towards the 'home counties', you lot Wink

If Anderson happened to be injured that would be quite a decent lower order: Bresnan, Broad, Woakes and Swann. In that case Swann might be best No 11 in test history!

Finn may well turn out to be England's #1 bowler. Certainly, I understood (from the hype surrounding him before he started to play for England), that Finn's method was modelled on his hero Glenn McGrath, that he was a consistent and miserly line and length bowler.

Was I misinformed or did I misunderstand?

(this is a genuine question not and not rhetorical).

Certainly his stats for England have shaped a different reputation as a wicket taker who can be costly. It looked to me that he has had a few action issues since playing for England (staggering and often rolling over after he delivers the ball) ... if he could iron these out and bowl with more accuracy, then surely he will be excellent?

Regarding Woakes figures ... awesome, and as a fan of English cricket exciting!

Think he needs to get a bit more pace on his bowling, when he played in Aus he was bowling in the high 70's/low 80's in terms of mph and I think to suceed, certainly at test level, he needs to pick up the pace a little. But thos stats are amazing and his batting has obviously come on a long way this year!

I think he is a bit sharper than that, JDizzle.

Could be that he was taking a bit of pace off to avoid getting carted around the park.

It'd be good to see him get a chance in the test team if he carries on next season where he has left off in this one.

I haven't seen him bowl a lot to be honest Fists. My one memory of him from the limited overs matches in Aus were he lacked a little "snap" in his bowling and seemed to be just putting it there, rather than hitting it hard. I haven't seen him at all this year on Sky, so if what you say is true, good luck to the lad!

P Singh modeld himself on McGrath too, dosnt man eaither can actually bowl like him.

Yes Finn stated his hero was McGrath and he wanted to bowl like him. But he seems to be prtty raw and wild, more hostile and less accurate. His strike rate for England is indcredible although he hasnt exactly faced the most testing of batting line ups so far.
I fel sorry for both him and Woakes who did at least as well as their senior counterprats when given a chance recently but seem well down the pecking order now (even Dernbach got played ahead of Woakes). Both are unfortunate to be around at a time when England have an embaressmnt of fast bowlrs available. These are the guys who made it realistc to imagine Broad getting dropped prior to this series.

Id be very suprised if Woakes wasnt in the mix for ODI tour squads ovr the winter. I cant se him getting near the test side whilst Bresnan Broad Anderson Tremlett and Finn are still all doing the business..not to mntion Shazahd and Dernbach being snffed up still by England. The reverse for Finn, who is likely to tour as a reserve seamer for tests but unlikely to get a look in at limited overs due to his struggles wth accuracy.

England have 8 seamers in and around the squad who are the match of anyone bar Kahn the Indians can produce, its quite shocking.

County stats alone are not enough to get to you in the England side, ask Rashid.

Woakes would be good in overcast conitions in England, New Zealand and South Africa. If its flat, he'll get walloped. He's mainly a line bowler, and for that role, Onions is far superior and has much more pace.

Would Anderson get into our best ODI team? An attack of:

Bresnan
Broad
Swann
Woakes
Finn

With maybe Patel in the top order chipping in could be decent.

Anderson in the right conditions is first choice along with Broad. Bresnan's ODI record is dreadful, average of 37 per wicket? Finn isn't economical enough for ODIs. I like Dernbach, slightly different. We could do with a left arm seamer.

We have had Gough/Caddick, Hoggard/Harmison and now Anderson/Broad. A swing bowler and a tall bowler. After Anderson and Broad the next opening bowlers for England will be Woakes and Finn. Both 22. Woakes should be the reserve bowler any time Anderson gets injured.

Finn is a better bowler than Woakes I don't think Finn is that inaccurate he just bowls a lot of full ball and because he doesn't swing it he gets hit for runs but he gets a hell of a lot of wicket due to his bounce. As he develops he will become more accurate and learn how to move the ball off the seam he will become a much better version of M Morkel (who just bangs it in, he doesn't think about his bowling if he did he would be better than Steyn). As for Woakes he needs to find a few mph before he can play test cricket he's too similar to shane watson at the moment. It was a fantastic performance.

certainly I thought so.....since I first saw him in ashes on debit about 3 years ago....
and thought so each time I saw him since......
and i thought eng is so lucky to have two allrounders of the quality of stokes and Woakes.....
(and 2 wK batsmen of the quality of butler and bairstow)

Woakes must be batted in Top-5..he has the correctness of a top-5 batsman and willingness to build an inning-

The way Vince is going and and if Balance fails to grab his 2nd chance and when Stokes is fully fit, Woakes can also be considered for a top 7 batting role.
Cook
Hales?
Borthwick?
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Woakes
Ali/Rashid
Broad
Anderson
Finn.
In spinning conditions, both Rashid and Ali can play, perhaps in place of Finn.

OK settle down , Olly Smile

Enough pining for the days of Willey and Dilley...

Have to admit you Woakes boosters have been proved correct - even if it took a few years ! Really was a terrific performance this week.

Not sure about KP _fan and the "bat him at five" theory . Big difference between 8 and 5 . Certainly he does look more the "steady" type than the late order aggressor ; but right now I'm more interested in his bowling. This match suggest he might be the eventual successor to Anderson. The fact that he can more than hold up an end is a nice bonus ; but I think we can sort out his place in the order once he's played a few more games. ...and hopefully the top order is looking a bit more settled !

Interesting to look back and the comment about needing a bit more pace. Now he'said bowling mid to upper 80s mph, he's getting movement later and so is more effective. Still a handy lower middle order bat as well, so looking like a good potential replacement for Jimmy.

Fully sold on Woakes the bowler. I prefer my bowling all-rounders to come in at 7 or lower (I see Stokes as more of a batting all-rounder)

Reason is, put them at 5 and we are say 20-3 then they could be out there batting about an hour or less after bowling.

I also like the idea that you can have a player lower down the order that can turn around a poor innings, or pile on misery to bowlers in a larger innings. Both situations are very demoralising for the opposition

Don't forget Olly that, as a reserve, you could consider the middle Curran brother (Ben) who is making his debut for Surrey 2nds at the moment.  He scored 63 yesterday, opening the innings. Very Happy
