The Games

Post by Dolphin Ziggler on Wed 10 Aug - 22:53

It seems bonkers to me that we had nowhere to discuss all the events at once, and I know there will be a lot of people like me tuning into Synchronised Diving, Dressage, Archery and Shooting with no real likelihood of doing so again for another 4 years! And I'll be damned if I'm gonna search for the right thread on this site for it!

It's because of level-headedness like this that you're still my second favourite poster, Ziggler. Tino was looking dangerous but he's slipped back a bit though he's still in bronze medal position.

I did it without any permission though, Galted. Do you really want such a maverick on the podium? I don't wanna trip myself up here, but I want to keep forum events and medal winners as clean and honest as possible.

Excellent gold in the diving for Britannia today. Absolute steal.

Still hopeful that GB can again finish 3rd in the medals table, and they're only 3 Golds behind Japan at the moment.

Definitely a good day for GB, with the golds in the canoe slalom and the diving.

Olympics is great for drama in sports that you would not normally even think of following - a few minutes ago there was a stunning moment in the weight lifting when an Azerbijani lifter broke the world record for the clean and jerk by 4 kg, lifting 12kg more than anyone else in the competition and iirc 15kg more than his previous lift to tie the total of a Chinese lifter and so sneak the gold medal (lower body weight).

Its been good so far. When else would you sit down and get excited by canoeing, diving and gymnastics all in one day.

We will all become experts on certain minority sports for a couple of days, then back to not caring for four years (or even longer if Britain are not competitive next time) - can't beat it!

Been waiting for this, Love the lympics and have really gotten into the rugby 7's (girls and boys) which i didn't think i'd do. Was whooping a good un for Jo Clarke in the canoes yesterday and can't believe we got gold in the 3m diving.

Speaking of which did anyone else hear of the trouble or see the papers repoting the other diving medal as Tom Daley and partner, instead of Dan Goodchild

Another good day yesterday, thought the rugby lads let themselves down a bit but to be honest Fiji just looked too big and a lot better.

Time for the cycling now and here's hoping for a clean sweep (I wonder if they'll get the track fixed properly as well)

Keep meaning to ask, is anyone else getting really peed off that they keep chopping from BBC1 to BBC2 and back, why not just keep it on one channel and run the rest of the programmes on the other???

I tend to look through the extra channels (red button - or 261-277 on satellite or whatever) and stick on one sport until it changes or I get bored. Get less of the linking presenters too...

I'm mostly the same - main channel (BBC1/2 and BBC4) coverage has too much of the presenter and interviews, not enough of what is actually going on.

I think it's a bit harsh to day the rugby guys let themselves down in the final - they over-achieved in getting there, and it was one of those games where every mistake they made got punished - I think it was Fiji's 3rd try came from a good GB break but what would have been the scoring pass not going to hand. 7s can sometimes be like that, especially against a side as good as Fiji.

Would have been lovely to see Grainger and Thornley get Gold ...but really , their second place was itself a fantastic achievement , given the way they had come back from being completely off the team just a couple of months ago , apparently going nowhere...

I had hoped they might get into the medals , but really it was only after the semi final that such a result even seemed possible : silver to the excellent young Polish crew was a great result ... And to get a fifth medal at 40 will probably mean nearly as much to Katherine as the Gold she finally won in London. Fully justified her come back to the sport .
One of my favorite moments of this games so far .

Way too much. Was a bit annoyed having suffered through Balding, Inverdale and Irvine to see that Gabby Logan is presenting the athletics.

The channel hopping has annoyed me. Equally annoyed by people moaning about partisan commentators. Our experts who are pundits are so heavily involved and ingrained into the sports and stuff that they can't help but be. They're happy for the people more than the country getting a medal itself.

The team pursuit? yes it bloody was.

Reminded me a bit of the time trial in 2012 - the way that there had been some very good performances but when you saw Wiggins out on the course there was no doubt. Its just a guy riding a bike but there is something so compelling about it.

Close to the best team pursuit I've seen ...

It's boring if it's all one way : but when the pendulum swings like that the event is indeed compelling.
To be honest , I expected GB to prevail at the Olympics : but living in Australia you can't help but get affected by the intense confidence of the local media ...I really wasn't sure until the qualifying round : a fantastic performance.
I've seen it reported that Cavendish was interested in a spot in the pursuit squad but frankly I don't think I'd have wanted to change any of those riders ; let Cav have the Omnium.

No reason limericks shouldn't be an olympic sport if golf, tennis and horse dancing all make it.
