US Open - Day Three

Post by CaledonianCraig on Wed 31 Aug 2016, 4:16 pm

Day Three sees Novak Djokovic face Jiri Vesely who beat him earlier in the season but the Czech had a long first round match. Britain's Kyle Edmund and Jo Konta are also in Second Round action.

Edmund surely on his way into the Third Round now. He leads 7-5 6-4 and surely Escobedo will find this too big a mental and physical challenge to overcome as I am presuming he has never played a five set match in his life.

Kyle is wilting in the third set.  It is unclear how much further Kyle Edmund can progress.  The US Open is played in very difficult physical conditions (heat, humidity, wind).

Jo Konta a set up and Tonga involved in a scrap with Australian Duckworth level at one set all but looks good to go two sets to one up. Djokovic due to court in the next half hour or so.

Well that was a letdown. Novak Djokovic through to the Third Round as Jiri Vesely pulls out injured. Not sure that helps Novak at all really as he needs court time to remind his touch.

Konta in desperate trouble with the heat. Don't think she will be able to finish this match.

Tough luck on Konta. Her match could end here as she is treated on court toiling badly in the heat.

Pironkova takes the set 7-5 and surely Konta cannot recover. Seeded Benoit Paired bows out against Baghdhatis and John Isner comes through in four sets.

Konta somehow a break up in the 3rd. Not moving fully but looks ok. Pironkova comedy gold when trying to get dropshots back at the moment.

Konta somehow wins in three sets after looking in all sorts of physical trouble after two sets. Tonga through in four sets.

Konta somehow through. Pironkova will be very disappointed. Very long delay when Konta was struggling and Pironkova was really poor in the 3rd.

Raonic probably on his way out. Either injured or very tired - no jump at all when serving. Raonic isn't beating any top 500 player serving at 100mph.

Maybe a tennis player will die at the US Open.  Konta says her distress happened suddenly - couldn't breath, heart racing.  I recall a few fainting in past years.

2015: "Sock was leading Ruben Bemelmans in the second round of the men's tournament two sets to one when he passed out."

2010: Victoria Azarenka, the No 10 seed, collapsed on court in the searing heat at the US Open during her second-round match against Gisela Dulko ...

2011: Nadal collapses due to cramp during a press conference at the US Open. This comes minutes after his 3 set victory over David Nalbandian

Raonic out.  Mhmm, I guess he is washed-up now.  Old age does that to everyone and he is no spring chicken anymore.  When John McEnroe won his last slam, he was younger than Raonic is now.  Time for Milos to step aside for the next generation.

Nadal up 3-0 after he broke Seppi and then saved two BPs in his service game.  Seppi does not look like he will have weaponry to trouble Nadal today.  Unless Nadal shows signs of rustiness, this will likely be quick.

Rafa coasts through in straight sets. A number of seeds did bite the dust today though. Most notably Milos Raonic bowed out with reports suggesting either injury or the heat blunted his serve.

Cramping seems to be a significant factor at the US Open. Causes include dehydration, low blood salt. Other medical issues are heat stress caused by heat and humidity. This can cause fainting and death. Raonic had cramping, while Konta had heat stress.
