Day Four sees Andy Murray taking on Marcel Granollers in the Second Round. Stan Wawrinka has a straightforward looking match against Italy's Alessandro Giannessi, Dominic Thiem takes on Ricardis Berankis and Dan Evans will have his work cut-out as he takes on upcoming German Alex Zverev.

US Open - Day Four Empty Re: US Open - Day Four

Should be easy wins for Murray, Stan, Nishikori and Thiem.

Del Potro v Johnson & Fognini v Ferrer may be interesting.

I give Evans a chance against Zverev, he's not been in great form. I notice Evans is playing doubles with Kyrgios...

Yes the Johnson V Del Potro match could be match of the day. For Evans it depends on which Evans turns up. Focussed and on the ball playing at the top of his game then he has a chance but anything less or Zverev on top form and the German wins.

Murray playing in the heat of the day. Remember him cramping against Haase in 2014 and we are seeing a few players (e.g. Konta and Raonic) already being affected this week. So might not be as straightforward as it looks. Still would expect him to win.

Granollers is climbing back up the rankings and in not too bad form but whatever the weather I' expect a straight sets win for Murray but a four setter may not be too bad as it offers a test.

Rain at Flushing Meadows and the new roof on Arthur Ashe court is closed so at least play will start on time on that court.

Murray about to take to court to start his Second Round match. Nishikori not having it his own way against World No 95 Karan Khachanov - on serve at the business end of the first set.

Granollers digging in very well and breaks back to trail 5-4. Nishikori embroiled in a real battle as match is going with serve in the third set and level at one set all.

Murray finally takes the first set at the seventh attempt in a set that took 67 minutes. Very enjoyable set of tennis.

Murray digs deep to break Granollers and leads 6-4 3-1. Not at his most polished here but getting the job done.

Murray ups his level and Granollers has no answer. Better set from Andy and he leads 6-4 6-1. The Third Round beckons. Meanwhile, it still rains in New York.

Andy Murray beats Marcel Granollers 6-4 6-1 6-4 in 2 hours 23 minutes to progress to the Third Round where he will play the winner of the Paolo Lorenzo/Gilles Simon match. Meanwhile, it still rains in New York and play remains suspended on all but Arthur Ashe Court.

Solid win for Andy. Only 43% first serves which is as low I can remember for a while - very low particularly for indoor conditions. Probably Simon next, so could be another long grind.

Any weather updates? Quite want to watch Kei v KK!

Oh, I've been watching the Williams match thinking that was all that was on! Looks like Kei has this one won but Khachanov looks to have improved a lot since I last saw him. Feel he has a lot of potential.

I liked the look of Khachanov, thought he hit the ball well off both wings and obviously has a big serve.

Maybe has a good future ahead of him.

Hmm, I've never watched Broady play before. She's on fire against Radwanska so far. I'm assuming she can't keep up this barrage of winners?

Lopez out Crying or Very sad I was hoping for Lopez-Dimitrov 3rd round match. Dimitrov himself may still be going out - currently serving for the fourth set trying to extend the match into the fifth.

Evans just went up two sets on Zverev. I did not think he had much chance, but I was obviously wrong.

Dimi takes the 4th set.

Del Potro up two sets on Johnson, and just broke in the opening game of the third. This appears to be smoother than I expected.

Wawrinka trying to close out Giannessi in three. Simon taking the must-win 4th set TB, so that match will go to five too. Fognini, having been bageled by Ferrer in the first set, is now up a break in the second.

Wawrinka wins, Dimitrov now looks on his way too - 3-0 up with two breaks.  Zverev up an early break in the third set.

I am currently watching Delpo who looks to be in control of his match.

Evans gets broken with a DF and loses the third set. Time to watch Simon vs Lorenzi, where Simon is hanging by a thread - apparently Lorenzi was just serving for the match but Simon broke.

Four Brits into the third round (the last 32) of a Grand Slam (singles):  Murray, Edmund, Evans, Konta - starting with eight at the beginning of the tournament (seven with automatic qualification and one successfully going through qualifiers).  Both Broady (powerful serve) and Robson (Mk II) look like promising prospects.  Hoping that Broady can stay in the top 100 and Robson gets into the top 100 shortly.  Has something happened with regard the management of British Tennis?  One would expect something could be learnt from the national programmes in cycling, gymnastics, rowing, swimming ... though tennis seems to be very much an individual sport.

Must say I have been impressed with Leon Smith with his stewardship of Britains Davis Cup and he seems to travel around the world with the Brits offering them support from time to time. I think Murray's mother Judy does something similar but perhaps on a lower level with the girls.

Think Andy Murray deserves a bit of credit for this. He helps the younger british players out a lot - Edmund, Evans, Ward etc have all benefited from his advice/training blocks or whatever.

Thinking of it, it is probably a "Glasgow" phenomenon: Judy Murray, Andy Murray (singles ranking 2) Jamie Murray (doubles ranking has been up to 1), Leon Smith (coached Andy Murray when Murray was 11 to 15) - these four probably form the base of supporting the younger players, with their expertise, access to facilities and inspiration.
