US Open - Day Five

Post by CaledonianCraig on Fri 02 Sep 2016, 12:26 pm

Day Five sees the singles reach the Third Round stage and Novak Djokovic faces Mikhail Youzhny. On old form you'd expect Novak to win in straight sets but at present Novak is striving to rediscover that form but still expect him to win in either three tight sets or in four. Rafa Nadal takes on Andrey Kuznetsov and it will be interesting to see how this one pans out. Sock takes on Cilic and home support may help but Cilic looks like he could be a dark horse for the title here. Isner takes on Kyle Edmund and Kyle has a good chance here as Isner has already played a couple of lengthy matches so far. Tsonga V Anderson will be a tight match and Konta takes on Bencic.

Youzhny has found a bit of form of late too. However, would expect a comfortable Djokovic victory in straight sets.

Rafa in 3 or 4. He's got a dream draw and although I rate Kuznetsov, he's not going to have enough to beat Rafa. Cilic in four I think.

Tsonga in 3. Anderson has only shown glimpses of last years form.

Isner in 4. Don't think Edmund returns well enough to beat him yet.

I don't think I'd argue with any of your predictions.

Tsonga looks to be coasting. He leads Anderson 6-3 1-1 with the tall South African having already had a lengthy spell of treatment on court.

And Tsonga breaks early in the second set. This could be over much quicker than I thought as you wonder what Anderson's appetite to fight will be like if his back injury is really bothering him.

Tsonga on the brink of a win or implosion. He leads 6-3 6-4 4-5 as he fights to hold serve and save the third set.

Tsonga came through his mini-crisis to win 6-3 6-4 7-6 against Kevin Anderson in just over two and three quarter hours. Sock has broken Cilic and is serving for the first set.

That's surprising. I thought Cilic looked very good last round. Still expect him to come back but fine start for Sock.

Yes but must be said that Sock is no mug now. But like you I'd still expect Cilic to come through. Konta due out onto court anytime now and...gulp...it is hot again.

Hmm, that's not great for her. It was surprising she suffered so badly last round though - she looks in great shape and my recollection is she had a couple of long matches on her Oz run with no sign of fitness issues. Hopefully, it was a one off thing!

Interesting to see Ozaka a break up in the 3rd against Madison Keys. That would be a big shock.

Apparently, Sock won their only other match (a Davis Cup rubber) so evidently Sock's game matches up well to Cilic's.

If Joko does win this, it currently looks like she won't have to face another seeded player before the SF. It's Sevastova next (beat Muguruza) and her projected QF opponent (Keys) is a double break down in the 3rd to Osaka (1-5). Wozniacki (currently outside the top 70) will be Osaka's next opponent.

6-5 to Madison Keys in final set. She has won the last five games.
Konta wins. Through to the fourth round matching what she did last year - so she won't drop her ranking and may improve it.

It is weird to think that Novak has reached the Fourth Round playing just one match and half a set of tennis. A record perhaps? Anyway when you think about it question marks will still remain about his form. Is he still vulnerable? Do the withdrawals mask the underlying problems or will the lack of tennis take the strain off his wrist? Time will tell.

Very solid from Kyle. He takes the first set 6-4 against John Isner. Isner has already had a couple of longish matches so far here already snd the big American will have to do the same here if he is to win.

Nervy game from Kyle but he manages to close out the first set. If Isner gifts him a break each set he's got a great chance!

Isner is cramping according to the BBC commentators.  Can he overcome it?  Kyle just has to get Isner to move and return few of the Isner serves.

Kyle asking for sachets of salt. He obviously knows that low blood salt levels cause cramping. Maybe the person who wins this match is he who cramps the least.

In the past Nadal and Djokovic and others would stretch the time taken between points. They were probably also careful in taking isotonic drinks.

I can't see any of these troubling ultra-professional Djokovic.  Of course hope Kyle reaches the fourth round.  Would be great for his rankings and his confidence.

Seems to be very unprofessional that: Kyle taking three sachets of table salt from the local café and adding it to his water bottle. Seem to recall Murray & others drinking from two different bottles, one presumably with added glucose, & mineral salts and the other presumably isotonic.

Britons are punching above their weight this USO.  Kyle looks like he has a decent chance now.  Evans is playing Stan tomorrow; that may be a bridge too far?  But Stan has not been in the best of forms lately, so we never know.  If all three somehow advanced to the round of 16, that would be unbelievable.  Even two would be pretty impressive.
