Pro12 general 2016/17

Post by profitius on Sun 18 Sep 2016, 2:06 pm

Great start from the Ospreys and Cardiff so far. Scarlets and Connacht must wake up soon.

Round 4 next weekend is when things really heat up. Many of those can go either way.

Leinster vs Ospreys
Glasgow vs Ulster
Treviso vs Dragons
Munster vs Edinburgh
Scarlets vs Connacht
Zebra vs Blues

The standard seems to have risen this season. Early days yet but good start.

As the old adage goes you can only play whats in front of you but the Os have had an easy start and good on them for getting the points in the bag.

Their next 3 games will give a better indication of where they are overall.

I'd love to say we'd get a win against Treviso but I won't hold my breath.

Glasgow vs Ulster looks the mouth watering tie.

Not nervous about playing Leinster, were in a purple patch and playing in the RDS doesn't worry us. I'm going for a late Dan Biggar penalty to win the game

Looking at the games this weekend, apart from Munster v Zebre (though Zebre are improving), they all look like they could be close.

That Ulster/Ospreys one looks like a cruncher

Probably Connacht/Edinburgh should have something extra too. Both sides just have to start performing - so a mix of need and frustration might see that one come alive in a pretty good way.

Leinster at Cardiff will be interesting.
It will also be on TG4 live.

Nice to see Ian Nagle back at the top level. Was doing well in Munster until the injury bug took over. Hopefully the time off has recharged the batteries, etc.

Back row of Ruddock, Leavy and VDF I really like the look off..... and Heaslip off the bench when the game opens up.
I like that entire starting pack as a set actually - hope that isn't a jinx.

The back 3 have experience but don't have huge pace.

Hope Daly gets some decent minutes off the bench.

Oh, and some lad named Sexton at outhalf.

Ulster look good this season- we're obviously yet to really 'click' but there has been a steely, mental strength to our game and if we can beat Ospreys tomorrow I'll really be feeling the momentum.

As a side note, can people post up some of the best tries of the season so far? There's been some crackers. This was my favourite;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4N2kuWMqAQ

Just because it was quality, but also because our reaction to going behind in a game we dominated was such a wonderful, flowing counter-attack. Pressure- what pressure?

Cian Bohane's effort, video in the above link. I say effort, by which I mean he saved Sweetnam from a Leguizamon moment. The reason I suggest it is because the strike move from Munster before all the drama, is quite wonderful.

Sweetnam really looking good. Man of the Match today v. Zebre. POM is back! Played about 25 mins. Looks to have really bulked up.

What I came on to say here until I saw Dodger's post is that The Rugby Channel is showing all PRO12 games (but you need the right VPN which can be solved by Hola).

The Rugby Channel is an American channel owned I think by USA Rugby. Great to see that the PRO12 is on it (along with 6Ns and some NZ rugby as well). The subscription to it is $50 per annum. The Italian teams are showing their games on it. Really good quality.

Did you manage to catch the game, Sin?

Also, regarding POM - I read that he has spent his time off really working on his upper body where he has had a lot of injuries in the past. So he probably has added a lot of muscle to his frame. Perhaps to make up for the probable decrease in dynamism after the ACL injury? Might as well be a big unit who can make the hard yards.

Attendances up by about 40,000 compared to after same round 6 last year. The Aviva game contributes to that clearly at this point.

When comparing the same matches between teams to last season, albeit played at different times during season, some attendances are up, a small number down including the Leinster v Munster derby by 2,500-3,000.

Cardiff doing the best of the regions in these comparisons. Other regions are down. Irish, Scottish and Italian teams are up slightly or well.

Does that just reflect that Welsh fans come and go depending on who is winning?

No idea, Notch. I'm just supplying the data. I'll stick a data table up shortly, if people were interested. Perhaps you could create a sticky of some sort and I'd be happy to keep it updated during the season, if that was helpful.

We (Ospreys) are down, 25601 to 24129 for the 3 comparable games from last season so about 1500 overall, I would hope with the kind of rugby we are playing those figures should see a significant rise.

Team/League Attendances after Round 6 with comparison to same matches in last season.

I'll update this after each league round during the season with comparators to last season.

Total of 277,502 through the gates after Round 6 is 40,000 up on same time last year.
A good chunk of that increase is from the Leinster/Munster game in Lansdowne, although that particular attendance was down about 3,000 on same game last year.

  • 35 games so far - 7,928 avg per game across the league (6,588 average last year after round 6)
  • This rises to an average of 8,813 per game, excl Italian home games.
  • Irish attendances up, particularly Munster
  • Welsh attendances down, except for Cardiff which has increased.
  • Edinburgh and Zebre slight increase.
  • Glasgow and Treviso up slightly more.

13 Irish home games
12 Welsh home games
5 Scottish home games
5 Italian home games

PRO12 European Cup home attendances make for grimmer reading.

2013/14 total attendances - 411,583 - H Cup/Challenge
2014/15 total attendances - 394,902 - Champions Cup/Challenge
2015/16 total attendances - 320,395 - Champions Cup/Challenge

That's a 91k drop over two years. 40k of that is Munster's alone. 14.5k to Cardiff, and Ulster 9.5, Leinster 8k, and Connacht 7.5k are the other big drops over 2 years.
Leinster had a bumper attendance in 2014/15 - 118k, but dropped last year.

Only one club has gained attendance year on year - up 4,500.
Glasgow.

If I read that right, all the regions are up, with the exception of the Scarlets. And to be honest their poor form can carry the can for that.

No SS, we are also down by about 1500 on comparable fixtures from last season, for the Dragons game this weekend we need about 10500 to catch up with last seasons figures, even though there is a Tagfest with loads of kids from both Regions can't see that figure being attained.

It is not on our Website and wasn't announced at pitchside last night, but apparently there was just over 9,700 at yesterdays match.
This was about 450 up on the New years day fixture last season, so we are eating into the deficit, and as I've been saying earlier in the season, we should soon have our attendances above last seasons. Especially with the kind of Rugby we are playing this season.

Have to edit this as the official figures show there were 9103 at this game which is 144 down on last seasons New Years Day fixture, so we've fallen even further behind last seasons total.

We had a crowd of 7684 on Friday, which was an increase of 420 on last seasons corresponding fixture, so things are moving in the right direction, but considering the type of Rugby we are playing, (every home game has had a try bonus point) it really is quite a pathetic response.
So much for a supposedly Rugby mad country.

68K attended Munster away games
Ospreys 42K
Cardiff 32K
Dragons 32K
Scarlets 29K
Connacht 28K
Glasgow 26K
Leinster 21K

PRO12 attendance figures after Round 10.

A total of 446,662 through the gates after Round 10 which is down for the first time this season by 8,889 on same round last year, due to a couple of cancelled matches between Zebre and Connacht/Ulster.  Round 10 last year had 82k through the gates due to it being the Christmas derbies.  So the overall numbers for the season should pick up in the next couple of rounds with Christmas and New Year matches.

Attendances are up overall when comparing it to the same matches between clubs last season by 23,347.

58 games so far - avg per game drops to 7,701 across the league (7,592 average last year after round 10)
Irish attendances up overall by 24,562, in particular Connacht and Munster
Welsh attendances down overall by 5923, even though Cardiff remains increased by 2,400.
Scottish attendances up by 2,822
Italian attendances up by 1,886.

20 Irish home games - 243k- avg 12,158
20 Welsh home games - 129k - avg 6,475
10 Scottish home games - 54k - avg 5,430
8 Italian home games - 20k - avg 2,463

Munster have the highest attendances as the away team at approx 75k, although this is heavily boosted by the Leinster match being played at Lansdowne instead of RDS.

Munster 75k (5 matches)
Ospreys 50K (5)
Treviso 46k (6)
Dragons 43k (5)
Edinburgh 35k (5)
Scarlets 31k (5)

Sold out notices outside Ravenhill and Thomond Park (with extra seating) for the Xmas derbies, and it looks like Cardiff is heading for the same with only terrace tickets left for their game against Dragons on St Stephen's/Boxing Day. Meanwhile Ospreys are hoping for their best attendance at Liberty in four years with numbers heading over 15,000 already for their ding-dong with Scarlets.

With the posh gits entertaining the riff-raff at Murrayfield, there's hopes they might exceed last year's attendance of 23,500 for a new PRO12 league match attendance record (in GB).

If figures go as forecast, season attendances will be up by approx 26,000 on same time/round last year.

Out of the 12 teams, only two teams are down on their last year's attendance figures for the same fixtures played so far - Dragons and Scarlets.

Full house at Munster, Ulster. 21,000 at Murrayfield for the 1872 Cup, and Ospreys attracted a best attendance since 2008 with over 19,000 at the Liberty. Cardiff kept up their increasing gate - up 6,000 on last season overall - with a near full house against Dragons.

548,000 through the gates so far this season. An increase of 33,000 on the same matches from last season and an increase of 26,000 for the same time period after Round 11 last year.

So much for a supposedly Rugby mad country.

Hi wayne, just because people are not going to watch Ospreys, it does not mean they are not watching rugby in Wales. People do not have the time or money to go to two or more matches on the weekend. You would get a more accurate figure if you added up all the attendances in your region. How many people were watching Aberavon, Bridgend, Swansea, Neath ect ?

We are a rugby mad country, we also have three times the amount of clubs, and half the population of Ireland or Scotland. There in lies the problem. OK

Edinburgh's %capacity figures are a bit skewed given they moved to New Myreside in January.   A more accurate figure can be arrived at once they've had a few more games this season.

In the ongoing Away Team Attraction League after Round 15, - ranked by average attendance gained - Munster stay on top boosted by their away derby game in Lansdowne.  If it was at a full RDS instead, they'd be about the same as Connacht who've played two less games away.

Total attendance to date is now 726,303 after 88 games giving a home average for the league of 8,253 (7,440 same time last season.)

The breakout by country is:
Ireland 380,977 up by 56,429 - all four provinces have increased with Leinster up 11,500 on same matches played as last year.
Wales 218,306 up by 16,919 - Cardiff and Ospreys have increased their crowds, Dragons and Scarlets have decreased.
Scotland 94,919 down by 4,161 - Glasgow up by 3,571 on last season, Edinburgh down by 1,800.
Italy 32,101 down by 12,550 - Treviso down, Zebre about the same.

Overall, it's an increase of 56,637 on same time as last season.  It's also an increase of 31,702 on the same matches played to date compared to last season.

Average attendances by country look like this:
Ireland 12,699 - 30 games
Wales 7042 - 31 games
Scotland 6,780 - 13 games
Italy - 2,469 - 14 games

Whilst Italian home attendances are very poor, the attendances for their away matches compare more favourably with other teams.

Looking at that table, is it would seem that traveling support definitely makes a difference. I know Munster fans travel in decent numbers.

I don't think so, ScarletS.   Munster have a big boost from their annual game against Leinster who play it at Lansdowne - 40k approx.   But it's more about what opposition teams that home fans like to go and watch their team play against.   Let's face it, Treviso don't exactly have a large travelling fan base, but home fans like watching their team win.   Conversely, Leinster and Ulster don't seem to be popular opposition for sides to play against.

Here's the latest table with update after round 18.

Ain't stats a hoot?  I mean stats really are an amazing thing.  They throw up such conundrums.  Leinster players only feature twice in those stats (same number as Glasgow and Treviso) and yet there the team is - top of the pile; 87 points more than their nearest points rivals (Munster), 14 more tries than their nearest try rivals (Ospreys).

I'm trying to work out what that means (i.e. stats v League position) and the only thing that seems workable is that Leinster obviously divide up the work through the entire squad.  Few individuals hit the big numbers because they're all contributing to the team dynamic?

Blues, Ospreys and Connacht, however, have still made impressive contributions to the stats that can't be brushed aside; you'd query why they aren't higher on the Leader table with their overall high performance showing.
But that's stats for you - there is still that great undefinable in rugby that can't be isolated by scientific graphs and performance print-outs.
