Pro12 general 2016/17

Post by profitius on Sun 18 Sep 2016, 2:06 pm

Great start from the Ospreys and Cardiff so far. Scarlets and Connacht must wake up soon.

Round 4 next weekend is when things really heat up. Many of those can go either way.

Leinster vs Ospreys
Glasgow vs Ulster
Treviso vs Dragons
Munster vs Edinburgh
Scarlets vs Connacht
Zebra vs Blues

The standard seems to have risen this season. Early days yet but good start.

As the old adage goes you can only play whats in front of you but the Os have had an easy start and good on them for getting the points in the bag.

Their next 3 games will give a better indication of where they are overall.

I'd love to say we'd get a win against Treviso but I won't hold my breath.

Glasgow vs Ulster looks the mouth watering tie.

Not nervous about playing Leinster, were in a purple patch and playing in the RDS doesn't worry us. I'm going for a late Dan Biggar penalty to win the game

Looking at the games this weekend, apart from Munster v Zebre (though Zebre are improving), they all look like they could be close.

That Ulster/Ospreys one looks like a cruncher

Probably Connacht/Edinburgh should have something extra too. Both sides just have to start performing - so a mix of need and frustration might see that one come alive in a pretty good way.

Leinster at Cardiff will be interesting.
It will also be on TG4 live.

Nice to see Ian Nagle back at the top level. Was doing well in Munster until the injury bug took over. Hopefully the time off has recharged the batteries, etc.

Back row of Ruddock, Leavy and VDF I really like the look off..... and Heaslip off the bench when the game opens up.
I like that entire starting pack as a set actually - hope that isn't a jinx.

The back 3 have experience but don't have huge pace.

Hope Daly gets some decent minutes off the bench.

Oh, and some lad named Sexton at outhalf.

Ulster look good this season- we're obviously yet to really 'click' but there has been a steely, mental strength to our game and if we can beat Ospreys tomorrow I'll really be feeling the momentum.

As a side note, can people post up some of the best tries of the season so far? There's been some crackers. This was my favourite;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4N2kuWMqAQ

Just because it was quality, but also because our reaction to going behind in a game we dominated was such a wonderful, flowing counter-attack. Pressure- what pressure?

Cian Bohane's effort, video in the above link. I say effort, by which I mean he saved Sweetnam from a Leguizamon moment. The reason I suggest it is because the strike move from Munster before all the drama, is quite wonderful.

Sweetnam really looking good. Man of the Match today v. Zebre. POM is back! Played about 25 mins. Looks to have really bulked up.

What I came on to say here until I saw Dodger's post is that The Rugby Channel is showing all PRO12 games (but you need the right VPN which can be solved by Hola).

The Rugby Channel is an American channel owned I think by USA Rugby. Great to see that the PRO12 is on it (along with 6Ns and some NZ rugby as well). The subscription to it is $50 per annum. The Italian teams are showing their games on it. Really good quality.

Did you manage to catch the game, Sin?

Also, regarding POM - I read that he has spent his time off really working on his upper body where he has had a lot of injuries in the past. So he probably has added a lot of muscle to his frame. Perhaps to make up for the probable decrease in dynamism after the ACL injury? Might as well be a big unit who can make the hard yards.

Attendances up by about 40,000 compared to after same round 6 last year. The Aviva game contributes to that clearly at this point.

When comparing the same matches between teams to last season, albeit played at different times during season, some attendances are up, a small number down including the Leinster v Munster derby by 2,500-3,000.

Cardiff doing the best of the regions in these comparisons. Other regions are down. Irish, Scottish and Italian teams are up slightly or well.

Does that just reflect that Welsh fans come and go depending on who is winning?

No idea, Notch. I'm just supplying the data. I'll stick a data table up shortly, if people were interested. Perhaps you could create a sticky of some sort and I'd be happy to keep it updated during the season, if that was helpful.

But it will put it in the little section above the rest of the forum, which I normally don't like.

We (Ospreys) are down, 25601 to 24129 for the 3 comparable games from last season so about 1500 overall, I would hope with the kind of rugby we are playing those figures should see a significant rise.

Team/League Attendances after Round 6 with comparison to same matches in last season.

I'll update this after each league round during the season with comparators to last season.

Total of 277,502 through the gates after Round 6 is 40,000 up on same time last year.
A good chunk of that increase is from the Leinster/Munster game in Lansdowne, although that particular attendance was down about 3,000 on same game last year.

  • 35 games so far - 7,928 avg per game across the league (6,588 average last year after round 6)
  • This rises to an average of 8,813 per game, excl Italian home games.
  • Irish attendances up, particularly Munster
  • Welsh attendances down, except for Cardiff which has increased.
  • Edinburgh and Zebre slight increase.
  • Glasgow and Treviso up slightly more.

13 Irish home games
12 Welsh home games
5 Scottish home games
5 Italian home games

PRO12 European Cup home attendances make for grimmer reading.

2013/14 total attendances - 411,583 - H Cup/Challenge
2014/15 total attendances - 394,902 - Champions Cup/Challenge
2015/16 total attendances - 320,395 - Champions Cup/Challenge

That's a 91k drop over two years. 40k of that is Munster's alone. 14.5k to Cardiff, and Ulster 9.5, Leinster 8k, and Connacht 7.5k are the other big drops over 2 years.
Leinster had a bumper attendance in 2014/15 - 118k, but dropped last year.

Only one club has gained attendance year on year - up 4,500.
Glasgow.

If I read that right, all the regions are up, with the exception of the Scarlets. And to be honest their poor form can carry the can for that.

No SS, we are also down by about 1500 on comparable fixtures from last season, for the Dragons game this weekend we need about 10500 to catch up with last seasons figures, even though there is a Tagfest with loads of kids from both Regions can't see that figure being attained.

It is not on our Website and wasn't announced at pitchside last night, but apparently there was just over 9,700 at yesterdays match.
This was about 450 up on the New years day fixture last season, so we are eating into the deficit, and as I've been saying earlier in the season, we should soon have our attendances above last seasons. Especially with the kind of Rugby we are playing this season.

Have to edit this as the official figures show there were 9103 at this game which is 144 down on last seasons New Years Day fixture, so we've fallen even further behind last seasons total.
