V2 WWC 2016- And The Winner Is.......

We started with 117 acts from across the globe and now one stands atop them all

Congratulations to AJ Styles who beat off all comers to become the 2016 V2 WWC Champion

Styles took 70% of the vote in the final and summed up how untouchable he's been in this competition, winning all his groups with comparative ease, including a record for this years tournament 23 votes in the 1st Round

Commiserations must be given to the runner up Charlotte Flair, who can be content to make history as the 1st female to reach a V2 WWC Final

An interesting note is that none of the final 5 from this year featured any of the Semi Finalists from 2015, showing how much the wrestling world has changed in the last year

Thank you to everyone who contributed and it's been great to see people engage with the concept

The semi finalists in 15 were Rollins, Owens, Sasha and Lesnar

I believe the only winners previous to this (I'm the 3rd, maybe 4th runner of the competition since it started on the old 606) were 3 in a row for Punk and 2 for HBK prior to that

Just by way of comparison - I was reading FSM's magazines Top 50 wrestlers of the year and our picks placed rather differently;

AJ Styles : 2nd
Charlotte : 42nd
The Miz : 48th
Nakamura : 30th
The Revival : 26th

I'd be interested to see the full list, personally I can't justify having Nak higher than Miz & Charlotte, maybe on the basis that his high end stuff in ring was better than those 2 but he's generally performer at a far lower level

PWI was - Reigns, Okada, Balor, AJ, Lethal, Owens, Nakamura, Rollins, Ambrose, Cena.

Okada was No. 1 in FSM

I appreciate Okada getting some love, I think on paper he had the best year but got rather overshadowed by the glitz and glam of Naito & Omega's pushes

Wow I haven't heard of the majority I need an education. (I hadn't even heard of the winner until a couple of weeks ago )

I think it's a pretty fair list, personally I think Sekimoto is a little high, he's an amazing wrestler but 2016 wasn't quite as big a year for him, of the 3 Japanese Indy hard nuts on there I'd say Ishikawa had a much more high profile year, still not much to quibble at, pleased to see Shingo get some love, his translated heel promos are incredible, he once blamed losing the title on leg day

This is also a more accurate representation of how the WWC field would look if I wasn't trying to appease all you Frak marks

Its a real "I know everything" mark-list. Theres some people in that list who could not handle the WWE scrutiny at the level others do.

Do you think the British wrestlers are fairly placed? Or is there an element of UK bias there?

I agree your probably right that some wouldn't work in the WWE product, but it doesn't mean that wrestlers all around the world haven't had fantastic years and deserve to be recognised for that

Ospreay definitely deserves his placing, he's had one of the all time great years, ZSJr I'm less sold on, he's not been bad but I've been less impressed than I was in 2015 and his CWC performances left me a little cold, I wouldn't have had him above Scurll for sure who's really taken the Indy scene by storm and done some career best work

It is undeniable that the UK scene is hot right now and those 3 are a major reason why so it's hard to say there was too much bias at play, in my opinion anyways

I've seen 17 of that list live in person. All superb.
