Yeah, smart move from DP. He needs to be careful not to overdo it and Australia doesn't suit him. His record there is relatively poor.

This sounds like an injury. He was match fit for the Davis Cup but won't be for OZ after 2 months of not playing? Just hope it's not the wrist again

I disagree emancipator. Del Potro has always been forthright and open as in the first to say he has an injury which he hasn't said this time. He has said he needed recovery time at the end of the gruelling Davis Cup and after that wants to use time to get himself in a fully physically fit state for season so is probably running a couple of weeks to a month behind other players on that front. As he has no points to defend in Melbourne and his record is pretty poor there he probably sees more sense in using that time to get fully fit for the season.

I hope you're right but the cynical part of me thinks he may not want to let on too much because of sponsors and so forth. Plus he may not know the extent of any injury yet, if it is one, and thus holding back until the details are more clear. Such rotten luck. At the end of 2009 he seemed set to win multiple slams - albeit he's been extremely good at times in the years since - he's never looked quite the same.
