Fed looks back in control again now. Has shortened the points in the last few games.
On the downside, Wilander is driving me mental.

Continuing impressive level from Roger. Very impressive game in the context of the last one. He has really played the whole set very well apart from maybe the first game.

Great hold from Fed though. This set looks won.

Federer is covering some serious mileage on the Nadal return game even up a break. Guess he meant it when said he'll give it everything even if it sidelines him for six months

And Roger gets another break to lead 5-1 in the third set.

Nadal at least needed Federer to work longer for these 2 sets he's won. Federer has been a class above and it's looking really easy out there. Even if this went to a 5th - and It won't - Federer would be fresh enough to keep up the aggression and keep dominating.

Federer takes the third set to lead two sets to one with almost two hours played.

Re: Australian Open - Day Fourteen
It was ABSOLUTELY crucial for Roger to that third set at the first time of asking.
Now he needs to keep serving like he did in the first and third sets to even begin to think about slam #18.

Re: Australian Open - Day Fourteen
Looking back at the set now you could say Federer dominated throughout. But such is the history of this rivalry that at 3-0 I really felt he had to get to 4-0 to win the set. And even at 5-1 Adv I was still feeling tension!
The good thing for Federer is that his forehand is back and he managed to combine most of the sh1t play, especially the errors into that one set, the second set.
Now will someone tell Rafa to make an unforced error from time to time?

Too many technical issues in Nadal's game. He wouldn't have had a prayer against Nole or Andy. Needs more tournaments to keep improving. If he can avoid injuries, he should be peaking just in time for RG.
As it stands, this match is totally on Federer's racquet and the only thing Nadal can do is hope for a miracle collapse from Federer.

You mean a collapse like he had in the 2nd set? Let's hope it won't happen but not sure that would be a miracle!

Re: Australian Open - Day Fourteen
A 35-year old in his first tournament back after 6 months being the favourite in a 5th set against the player who has always been his toughest mental and physical opponent in the very tournament where he once folded in the 5th set after playing a previously awesome match? Not sure where you are getting that from.
Great point to end that game by the way. Has actually been a very good standard match, better than expected certainly.

Roger's problem is to that he has not found a way for his serving and forehand to remain consistent throughout this match

Re: Australian Open - Day Fourteen
Whatever happens here you have got to give Federer credit for going through Berdych, Nishikori and Stan, and for the way he played in sets 1 and 3 here against a Rafa that just isn't giving him free points. You can't really expect more at the age of 35 after the time he has had out.
Let's hope we get a better final set than Australian Open 2009 anyway.
Rafa strong favourite here, but it hasn't been a long match, and Federer seems in OK physical condition, so anything can happen. Still a minor miracle if he wins it.

Re: Australian Open - Day Fourteen
Don't think Rog has ever lost a GS final against Rafa after being two sets to one up, but it could happen here. I think the del Potty loss at the USO in 2009 was the only time the Swiss relinquished a 2-1 lead in a GS title match.
Haven't seen any of it so far but, as I was expecting a Rog defeat in four, there is still hope. Reckon Rafa will come through, though. At least everyone has got a full match.

Re: Australian Open - Day Fourteen
The way they've both played I'd say the only thing keeping them out of the top 5 by year end would be fitness, injuries and motivation. Especially in the case of Federer. Rafa has played more like a 6-10 ranked player in recent years but he looks a better this match and with potentially 2000 ranking points here (or at least 1200) plus the clay court season to come, I think he could get into the top five.

Re: Australian Open - Day Fourteen
Nadal only leads 3-2 in matches that went to fully five sets
However that may be really because Federer got a couple of wins in against a young Nadal in matches where Nadal did well just to get to five.
Nadal =- AO 09, W 08, Rome 2006
Federer - W 2007, Miami 05
