Do Refs and TMOs get "Told off" Empty Do Refs and TMOs get "Told off"

There have been any number of occasions where a citing panel have reviewed incidents that were looked at by the Ref and TMO during the game, at times stopping the game for what seems to be an eternity.

The latest of these incidents occurred on Friday night when Leicester winger Adam Thompstone leapt high for a crossfield kick and was upended by Quins fullback Aaron Morris. Morris received a yellow card and Tigers were awarded a penalty try. However the citing officer and subsequently disciplinary panel decided it should have been a red card and have banned Morris for 3 weeks.

Ignoring our own personal feelings on these types of challenges, and how the sanctions are decided based in large part on outcome, the panel have effectively decided that the match officials made an error. Of course refs make mistakes, but the whole point of using TMOs and ad nauseam replays is to limit such mistakes. In a situation like this, are the officials reprimanded in any way? Should they be? Not looking to hang officials out to dry, especially as the game is so hard to officiate as it is, but surely high profile mistakes require some consequence?

I can't remember names or specific incidents but I do recall reading after incidents were mistakes were made that officials would be stood down etc

The problem with dressing down refs etc is that there are times that they get it right but get told they are wrong, citing commissioners and disciplinary panels have got it wrong in the past too yet theres no comeback there.

Regarding the specific incident, I think its one that highlights the problems with the rule. Thompstone jumped late and Morris had his eye on the ball the whole way, there wasn't much he could do, his grasping attempt makes it look worse but that's post contact trying to stop the outcome and if he had somehow caught him and stopped him falling to ground its still a penalty but no red.

Oh, I had sympathy with Morris and looking at it time and again I am not sure I agree with the disciplinary panel's decision. I do feel however that at the least those in teh judiciary and those enforcing the game's laws need to ensure they are showing more consistency.

Reading the disciplinary panels ruling they deemed it to be reckless, without being in the room or seeing the full report I cant fathom how they deemed it to be reckless. For me it would mean that everything is in a sense reckless on the pitch

A few years ago Ulster had 3 incidents in one game against Scarlets which highlight the mess that is the disciplinary process, Roger Wilson reaching from the back of a maul tried to dislodge the ball from John Barclay, he caught Barclay in the face. Ref and TMO adjudged it accidental yet the disciplinary panel said it was reckless and suspended him for two weeks.

Nick Williams was cited for charging into a ruck with his shoulder which injured Aaron Shingler, the ref and TMO cleared him during the game and he was cleared after him despite it being reckless and not the first or last time he did it. He did it a few weeks later and was banned.

In the same game, Luke Marshall caught Tagicakibau who was on the ground while he was almost skipping back into the defensive line. He wasn't watching where he was going yet was deemed to have deliberately kicked him. If that was the case then he should be nowhere near a rugby field again.

These three decisions were taken by the SAME panel of 3 officials yet the logic used is all over the place, its not the only time Ive seen the same panel use competing logic on different decisions to arrive at contradictory decisions.
