RG - Day 2
Djoko and Rafa in action today after Kerber crashed out yesterday. You wonder whether Andy could make it a second number one losing in the first round.
Thiem had a thumping win on Sunday and could be a real threat. Interesting to see if Djoko's new association with Andre will reap immediate benefits. For those unaware (probably very few) the tennis is on Freeview Channel 24 (ITV 4).

Bedene thru in four against Harrison. Mug the defending champion bt Schiavone in straights.
Watching the Djkoko match. Some great rallies and Djoko looking good in patches but still not the Djoko of old.

Didn't see the Djokovic match but that is a good opening win. While not a big threat, Granollers is no mug on clay and is very experienced. Good to see Novak come through that one in straight sets.
Anybody see the match, how was novak playing?
Sounds like a very easy win for Nadal today

Saw quite a lot of the Djoko match. At times, Nole looked good but then he would chuck in a bad game or a bad point. Also, he got upset once or twice, at one point smashing the ball into the net in anger.
There does seem to be a lack of pop in Djoko's serve and ground strokes compared with this time last year. He seemed to be moving well enough.

Frankly I thought Novak made a bit of a dogs dinner of it at times... albeit that Granollers stuck his heels in and wouldn't go away..The result was in no doubt but was not impressed by Djoko overall I have to say but I turned over after two sets to see Rafa (well come on what did you expect? Rafa didn't find it so easy in the second set and faced BP twice but did what Rafa does best when his back is against the wall.. the rest was plain sailing.

Re: RG - Day 2
I really don't know what is going on with the Djokovic serve. I have noticed since last summer that his serve speed seems far slower. I remember Novak in 2015 used to hit a decent number of aces in every match but now they are very few and far between. I wonder is it a technique issue or related to previous injuries he may have had and wear and tear over the years.
Serve is so crucial and not getting free points makes life very difficult. It is the one thing that kills Nishikori for example, he has all the shots but for me his serve is very average and he rarely gets free points. Could you imagine the likes of Kei and Novak with a Federer serve, would be lethal !

Verdasco and Zverev called off for the day at one set all. Duracell Bunny Ferrer thru in five after a 13-11 final set against Donald Young.

If this is the future of men's tennis then I am done with following tennis. The women's game has long been spoilt by this.temporary21 wrote:Take a listen to dutra silvas grunt

Could barely watch that youtube clip.
After only a matter of seconds, I decided to fast forward to the final minute of the 'highlights' - at which point the grunting had reached a whole new level.
Horrendous
I just pray this doesn't become a regular feature of the main ATP tour, in the way that it has with the WTA - who should of course have taken proper steps to bring an end to such nonsense years ago. Nothing will convince me that there is any need for it.

Re: RG - Day 2
Djokovic wasn't great to be honest. Seemed to be broken a lot and could have been broken even more. Some good patches of play too though.
Nadal good 1st and 3rd set. 2nd set could have gone either way - Paire had two break points to go 5-3 up, fell apart after he didn't break. Also when Rafa was serving for the set at 15-15 I think, Paire stopped play to challenge. The ball was out as per hawkeye, but umpire deemed it in.
