RG -Day 6

Post by sirfredperry on Fri 02 Jun 2017, 8:27 am

Djoko and Rafa play today and should progress with few problems. No real stand-out men's match today, unlike the delpo-Murray clash tomorrow. Feel Andy, despite comparatively poor form of late, will come through that.

Rafa making short work of Basilashvili.

Goffin had to retire injured. Shame, him v Thiem in R4 could have been fun.

Things should get more interesting with firstly the Murray - Del Potro match and then into the second week with more better matches. It looks like a dull (ish) first week this year, at least in the sense of little surprises, but that should said us up for a good second week with many top players still in.

Think (?) I heard that Goffin's injury puts him at serious risk of missing Wimbledon.

That would be a real shame. The strength-in-depth factor in the men's game is not that great right now : we really need all the upper tier players to be present & in good shape for the Slams.

Djokovic could be going out early here, not that I would even be that surprised anymore. He is just all over the place since middle of last year.

Well I personally doubt Djoko will lose it from here ....now that it's (almost certainly) going the distance.

Understand Nole was spoken to about the constant pre-serve ball bouncing. About time too. I counted 16 bounces in an earlier round.
Been watching a bit of 17-yr-old Bellis who was about to level her match with Caroline W when they called it off for the day. Looks a great prospect.
   Great shame for Goffin.

stats in the BBC report fo Djokovic match:

Djokovic has a 58-11 win-loss record at FO behind Rafael Nadal (75-2) and Roger Federer (65-16) while Vilas recorded 58-17.

These are players with the most wins. In terms of % of wins, Rafa's is light years better than the others. Would be interested to see who else could compete with Rafa for total % of wins. Bjorn Borg has 49-2 so it's possible he could well end up with a higher % win rate than Rafa although that would, if so, only be achieved by retiring earlier.

If Rafa loses one more he will still be ahead of Borg in % win rate.

If he loses two more he will need to get to 99 wins to have a higher % win rate than Borg which would require playing for quite a few more years.

It's absurd. I suggest that any of us who play tennis try bouncing the ball 16 times before serving. Just to see how incredibly ridiculous it is.

It's reversion.  He is reverting back to the pre 2011 days, when he used to bounce the ball interminably before serving.   It seemed like a nervous thing or maybe overthinking where he was going to place the ball before serving.

I've always thought that the ball bouncnig thing is a way of deliberately taking more than the allowed time between points. If you are only slightly over and you are already bouncing the ball, the umpire is going to think, well no point calling it now, he is about to serve anyway. And after a lot of bounces you might still think, well surely he is about to serve any second. The umpire risks calling out as a person goes up to throw the ball.

I'm not criticising only Novak here, I think Rafa and others also do it.

Its not ball bouncing that Rafa gets called time for... others take time including Andy and Delpo we are back to the argument of consistency.. this is the problem by Umpires imo
But ball bouncing is a distraction
