RG - Top 8

Post by Born Slippy on Sun Jun 04, 2017 9:16 am

All the top 8 seeds in the men's draw have now made the last 16, following Kei's five setter earlier. Rafa looks well on his way to the quarter final and Raonic is also on top against PCB.

Will we get a full set of top 8 seeds in the QF? Have to say I thought Raonic was probably most in danger, so if he comes through I think it could well happen.

Raonic lost to PCB so he won't be making the QF. I suspect Kei may be next, as Verdasco looks great this FO so far.

On the other hand, only 9 of the top 16 seeds made it to the round of 16.  While that number is not very low by long-term historical standards, it is lower than what we have typically seen in recent past.  Last time RG had fewer than 9/16 was in 2008.

Apparently the top 8 seeds haven't all made the QF in a slam in the open era - although 7 isn't that uncommon. We were one match away from history!

But wrong kind of history!  I do not think I would want 8/8 making it.  As it is, we get too few upsets.

Swings and roundabouts SB. Upsets are great but they can lead to some quite dull second weeks, as it usually results in whichever big name remains cruising to the title. The best second weeks tend to be those with the top guys still present, where the results are unpredictable.

But also very dull first weeks! I would not want to have 2/8 advancing either, but 8/8, during a period where we already tend to have same players again and again...

A different kind of rarity: I wonder what was the last time 3/4 semifinalists had not dropped a set? I would think it could be a long while back (?)

So I looked at this, and as far as I can find, this has only been the third time in the open era that three semifinalists reached SFs without dropping a set.  The other two were:

1988 Australian Open:  Lendl, Cash and Wilander did it.  The fourth semifinalist was Edberg.  While the three did not lose any sets until the semifinals, they started losing sets there - both semifinals as well as the final went full five sets.  In the final, Wilander beat Cash 8:6 in the fifth set.

1977 USO:  Vilas, Connors and Barazzutti.   However, this one should perhaps be asterisked as the first four rounds were played BO3 sets, so it was easier to not drop a set.  The remaining semifinalist was Solomon.  Vilas then beat Solomon, and Connors beat Barazzutti, both in straight sets.  In the final Vilas beat Connors in four sets, including the final set bagel.
