Wimbledon - Day 10 (Thursday)

Post by sirfredperry on Thu 13 Jul 2017, 12:58 pm

While everyone digests the drama of the men's quarters, it's ladies' semis today. Mug should be too good for Rybarikova while Konta could certainly beat Williams (she leads their h to h by 3-2) but I think this will prove a match too far for Jo.
Not beyond the bounds of possibility that we could end up with a 35-year-old winner of the men's and a 37-year-old winner of the women's. Reckon Mug will take the ladies' crown, though.

Rybarikova has been a complete surprise so far. She's knocked out Pliskova and Vanderweghe, two really strong grass court players. They particularly seem to have struggled to deal with her variety (she uses a lot more slice than is common on the women's tour). I think Muguruzza is a bit more solid, and I expect her to come through, but don't think it will be straightforward.

Konta-Williams could be another classic. Both playing really well and should see some great shot making from both sides. First serve key for Konta I think, she's been hitting it so consistently so far, and will need to today. Williams really got after her second serve in Rome (?) when they last played.

The women's tournament has been great so far this year IMO, and hoping today continues to live up to that.

Tough start for Rybarikova, looking a little over-awed at the occasion, and Muguruza races into a 4-0 lead.

Just too good from Muguruza. Rybarikova does at least get on the board in the first set, but Muguruza serves it out for 6-1 with little fuss. She then breaks twice at the start of the second set, and leads 3-0. This one could be over very soon, just nothing Rybarikova can do to contain Muguruza's power and accuracy out there.

Rybarikova finally on the board in the second set. Still 4-1 down though.

All over. Muguruza through 6-1 6-1. Awesome performance, helped by Rybarikova not really turning up.

Well that didn't last very long. Pity that it was Ryba rather than Vandeweghe that was overwhelmed so we could have had the headline: "Garbine Makes a Mug of Coco."
Only hope the second semi is a bit more competitive.

I just think the reality of things got to Rybarikova. She blinked, thought about the enormity of the occasion and she just froze. I'd still have felt Muguruza would have won come what may though as she has been there, done it and looked in great form here.

@SFP: Love your headlines - luckily we still have Jo Konta and Venus, both of whose names generate a few opportunities for puns.

Yeah. Venus on Another Planet after the first set but Don't Konta Your Chickens Yet.

Konta looking too nervous, shame. Forehand in particular very loose. Williams breaks in set 2 with a large slice of luck (3 net chords and a mis-hit return dropping in), and moves 4-1 ahead.

And there it is. Konta's FH letting her down again, and Williams rather flukes another return to set up the match-winning pass. Williams too good, Konta looked like nerves somewhat got the better of her, shame, but it's been a fine run.

All over and the headline writers can work on their "Venus Eclipses Konta" headlines.
Incidentally, this was the headline on the WTA website ahead of the first semi final: Don't expect first-time Slam semifinalist Magdalena Rybarikova to be afflicted by nerves this afternoon...

I just wanted to scream. GO TO THE NET
she has the strokes that make good approach shots. She just doesn't capitalise on them

At this stage of her career Venus is something of a grasscourt specialist - before this year Konta hadn't gone too far at Wimbledon, so hopefully she's learnt a lot from this run on what isn't her best surface.

Lets hope Konta can take her form into the US summer hardcourt swing, where she stands a better chance of going all the way. Would like Venus to win the final but got a feeling that Muguruza will get her revenge from losing to Serena couple of years back.

Hm, thought Konta might win that, Venus trying to overshadow Roger's potetial achievements Wink . Instead of oldest slam/Wimbledon winner for x years....it may end up being oldest slam/Wimbledon winner since....yesterday!

Still, Muguruza appears to be very slight bookies favourite.

I enjoyed that semi between Venus and Konta....

Both had similar styles, and both attacked the second serve. When Venus attacked, Konta served wide. But when Konta attacked, Venus used the body serve very well.

Muguruza vs Venus should be close.

It's been an impressive run by Konta, who has all the hallmarks of a future Slam winner.

Full credit to Venus for a very solid performance, even if she was the beneficiary of occasional help from Konta.

Could be a great final if both play like they did today.
Muguruza lost her last warm up match 6-1, 6-0 to Strycova (hopefully got the score and spelling correct!) but has played better and better with each passing round.
Venus simply defies the passing years and looks as good as she did a decade or so ago.

Difficult to call this one although the bookies have Garbine slight favorite. Mind you they fancied Konta's chances too!
