Very good article, Lets hope 'the powers that be' read it and reduce the number of games in a season.

This issue is a ticking time bomb.

Some interesting insights on the RugbyPod this week with Danny Cipriani on.

Talking about pre season being part of the problem and Cipriani talking about how under most S&C regimes he never feels fully fit throughout the season. I think it's a problem across most sports especially teams sports, it's been one of the biggest criticisms of Arsenal with the number of injuries they pick up. Carl Frampton this week has been talking about being refreshed under a new coach and is doing a lighter training load and feels that will prolong his career, including more than halving his sparring which will decrease his chances of CTE.

Dan Cole wrote:My grandfather worked down a coal mine. The seam collapsed on him and he broke his back. He was left injured by his job and I will possibly have the same consequences. But I enjoy my job a lot more than he enjoyed his, so it's a pay-off.

Dan Cole wrote:You struggle to get a good night's sleep after a game on a Saturday afternoon because your ear's hanging off or your shoulders hurt. You get to three o'clock on a Sunday and you start feeling worse. Normally Monday is the worst day for stiffness, tiredness, pain," said the 30-year-old.

What hurts most depends which way you've been lying, but usually you'll have a stiff neck or a stiff shoulder. You're creaky in your lower limbs, but you still get going. You have to get going. Usually by Thursday you're close to 95%. I'd never say you're 100% fresh.

The big problem with this and the many articles on Concussion is that Parents are not allowing their kids to come to rugby.

We are seeing it at my local club, started off with 40 U9s kids in sept (1st year of contact) and we are down to 27 already and its only October!

Parents are worried about their kids so they simply stop them playing the game.

Do your U9s play full contact?

These are the maximum levels allowed. So yes some contact for U9s - though extremely limited. It is not compulsory to introduce contact as early as that though.

Contact is still contact, what do you mean by 'some contact'?

Whilst not compulsory every club we come across starts contact at U9s, yet to find one that does not.

Sure we don't have rucks or mauls but a tackle is enough to cause injury, hell even some Pros get it wrong week in week out in the AP.

You are not meant to be teaching full tackling is my understanding, but rather an interim measure one step up from tag - so grabbing hold of the player round their body from behind.

Coaches are also meant to ensure that size disparities are removed from a game (so take of the big lad) and teh score is not meant to be kept. (Yeah right I see that happening Very Happy)

We've introduced tackling to our 7 year olds and have them playing both touch and full tackling games. The mini rugby game has never been in better health locally so I find it surprising to hear it's being effected elsewhere. Teaching a good technique from the off is much more important that wrapping in cotton wool.

Wrong, wrong and correct, the score is not important.

The RFU are very happy for tackling to take place at U9 level and a small child using the correct tackle technique can bring down the fat lad.
But everyone learns at a different pace so before a game with another club the coaches can decide whether to play contact or tag.

Not wrong according to the guidance we were given by the RFU Regional Development Officer who was quite clear:

U8s - tag
U10s - full tackling
U9s - tackling partially introduced.

It was also made perfectly clear that the Code of Practice means that grouping of players should always look at safety and the guidance we were given was to make sure that size disparities were properly managed.

The most important thing is to have well trained coaches who ensure that the playing environment is safe, and that the kids are having fun.

Well maybe we had a different RFU coach in!

But anyway back on topic, its madness that the powers that be want to increase the number of games over the season.

Blip or not fans pay money to watch the best players, if all the stars are injured then rugby needs to do something, fast.
