Two time former champion Gary Anderson is also into the second round. But former BDO champion Jelle Klassen is out.

you know its nearly Christmas when the darts starts

caught Thursdays action but missed everything else so far. its always a bit of a slow starter this tournament with very one sided games in the first round

Agree. The first round is always a bit of a slog and seems to take an age to complete.

Having said that, two superb games this evening with Keegan Brown knocking out a troubled James Wade, and Vincent Van Der Voort (playing the best he's done in years) smacking Chisnall 3-0.

both chizzy and wade are big names but having watched them recently thats all they are. both in terrible form. so much that i had a bet on brown knocking wade out, shame i didnt do the double. that would have really boosted the price

it will be nice to see some different players than the usual lewis, wade chizzy etc making the last 8 with the big 3. also looking forward to the premier league because of this. just hope the wildcards dont go to them

62 year old Paul Lim has been hitting 180s for fun. Very close match with Webster.

With regards to James Wade is still seems ridiculous to me that he's the third most successful player in PDC history in terms of major titles. Wade with 7 titles is 'more decorated' that dual world champions Gary Anderson(5 majors) and Adrian Lewis(4 majors). Wade filled his trophy cabinet in the transitional time when Phil Taylor polished off Raymond van Barneveldt in the last 2000s.

Wow, Webster saves a match dart at 1-2 0-2 and levels at 2 sets all with some rock solid darts. However, his game collapsed in the 5th set and 63 year old Paul Lim wins! 35 years after his worlds debut, 27 years after his 9 darter and 23 years after he last won a match at the worlds.

andersons and lewis two world titles eclipse anything wade has done. cant be more decorated if you haven't won the big one. its like saying a football club is more decorated by winning more league cups than a team thats won the premiership a couple of times

Adrian Lewis will now drop to, at best, #20 in the World. He has fallen off a cliff.

The PL is massively open this year - MVG, Wright, Gando, Gurney, Mensur and RVB will be in, possibly Cross - but at least three places open if anyone makes a run!

Your good self and myself total agree that Anderson and Lewis' multiple world championships eclipses anything Wade has achieved. But to casual fans it's misleading when the PDC brand Wade the third most successful player in their history.

I think, sadly, Adrian Lewis' best days are behind him. Granted he was runner up at the 2016 world championships, but he's not offering too much else in recent years.

I agree but it needs to be said that both Anderson and Lewis have underachieved (outside the world championship) with the talent they have. Both should have won more majors.

Think Wade is getting a bit of a bad rap here! Anderson I rate higher, because his top level is about the only persons whose is anywhere near MVG's but Lewis is a bit overrated. He has always blown hot and cold, and Wade's relentless consistency was always more suited to leg play than the set format in the Worlds.

Huybrechts poor, but even if he had been throwing well, he would have found it difficult to beat Richardson. Fluent throw, great consistency.

That’s half the PL players out in the first round, with Wright still to play.

First round has concluded, seeds that were knocked out are:

Dave Chisnall; Jelle Klassen; Stephen Bunting; Jonny Clayton; Kim Huybrechts; Adrian Lewis; Cristo Reyes; James Wade; Mervyn King; Mark Webster; Benito Van de Pas; Joe Cullen

A few more were pushed to five sets. Ensures the draw is just a bit more open.

I think the main problem for Anderson and Lewis has been trouble with hitting doubles. Anderson in particular early in his career was quite frankly embarrassingly poor at hitting the doubles. It’s obviously improved in recent years

That’s the one thing Wade does well - hitting those doubles

He missed them all. Misfiring Suljović gets through.

Yep, Gurney out. Biggest casualty so far. Cross, earlier, survived two match darts to win.

Taylor presently hammering Pipe in front of a hostile (towards Pipe) crowd.

Think Anderson, the other one, has a decent chance against Barneveld later on.

Cross-Smith was a belter earlier. Cross didn't really drop a level, Smith was just incredible. Fully expect him to beat Big John and and (probably) Mensur. Collision course with MVG is on.

Taylor cruised passed Pipe but didn't set any pulses races. He will have to raise his game considerably if he wants to get passed Gando in the quarters.

If Vinny maintains his decent form then him and Barney should be a cracker. I didn’t realise Price had such a diabolical record against MvG. Not that it came as much of a surprise. Can’t see that one being any closer than 4-1.

Peter Wright played Jamie Lewis in Rd 2 of the Worlds in 2017, averaged 103.53 and won 4-0.

This year, Snakebite averaged 103.44 and lost 4-1! Lewis averaged 16 points more!

We have the quarter-final line-up:

MVG v RVB
Cross v Van Den Bergh
Taylor v G Anderson
J Lewis v D Webster

I think, in view of Anderson's injury, that we'll have Taylor in the final. The other finalist is far more difficult to predict - any one of MVG/RVB/Cross has a good chance of making the final.

Typical from Barneveld when he’s under pressure, hence why he’s only won 3 TV tournaments in the PDC.

He should have been 3-0 up as MVG started so poorly, but wasn’t ruthless enough, then he coughed in the deciding set.

Cross will fancy his chances.
