2018 Lakeside

Post by Duty281 on Sat Jan 06, 2018 12:54 am

Starts tomorrow. As far as I can work out, half of it is on Channel 4, the other half on BT Sport.

Glen Durrant is the defending champion and overwhelming favourite. The main challengers come in the form of Danny Noppert, Scott Mitchell and Jamie Hughes. Dangerous outsiders? Perhaps Martin Adams, Wesley Harms and the relatively unknown Derk Telnekes.

It's proper darts, and they're all here etc.

Scott Waites? I don't follow the BDO outside of the Worlds but he's been world champion twice and won the Grand Slam and made the final another year! Just seems like he can't be bothered most of the time though...

Well, he has a better chance than Martin Adams now!

I'm no fan of Adams, but still sad to see him throwing at an average which must have been in the low 80s. The fact that the second seed (and BDO World number one) still required a sudden death leg to beat Adams probably doesn't bode well for the rest of the tournament...

The standard of the BDO has, indeed, declined sharply this decade. I would only back Glen Durrant, as it stands, to be a top 32 PDC player.

A number of factors, including the PDC building up their own development and challenge tours, have led to this. With the TV deal for the Lakeside tournament expiring next year (I think), it could be the end of the road very soon for the BDO.

Noppert under zero pressure all game, but he's delivered a very classy performance.

Telnekes through in his prelim game.

Quietly impressive, but probably too raw to win this tournament.

Sounds like Williams v Whitehead was a hell of a contest.

Was a superb game to watch, indeed. Great advert for the game.

Whitehead threw it away though - 10 missed darts to break in the second set (a set which he eventually lost), and three missed darts to win the match.

Elsewhere, a lot of the challengers have fallen by the wayside, meaning Durrant shouldn’t have too many difficulties in winning Lakeside again.

For all the stick the Lakeside gets, there has been some good games - especially in Round 2.

Durrant looked imperious, but the Waites game and Scott Mitchell game were good as well.

Scott Waites won a thriller against Andy Baetens. The young Belgian wasted 6 match darts

Tournament favourite Durrant recovered from 4-1 down to win 5-4; something like 12 of the last 14 legs he won.

Shame. Durrant said he’d only switch to the PDC if he was knocked out before the SF - I’d have liked to see him give it a shot.

Really don't see any point in Durrant staying. With others in the BDO off to Q School (including Noppert), there's hardly going to be any competition for him.

Veenstra on the cusp of getting knocked out in a strange game: he had three darts to go 3-0 up in sets, but missed, and ended up 2-4 down after a dull performance. Now Unterbuchner has just missed a match dart.

Still game on, then.

Probably has the view of, I’d rather be called a two-time champion of the world, and possibly winning two or three more down the road, than moving over, and making the numbers up at PDC level

The German gets through, 5-4. Another good game.

All three games, so far today, have gone 9 sets.

Another entertaining 5-4 (all 4 games have finished that way today) epic sees the erratic Welshman Warren out of the tournament.

Very brave effort all tournament from him, certainly one of the surprise highlights.

Great day of darts. Still can't see beyond Durrant, but we may be shocked further!

So Duzza vs McGeeney in the final. #1 seed vs #2 seed. In theory it should be a close game. In reality, Durrant has had several tougher matches on his way to the final. I can see this being a blow out - 7-0, 7-1, 7-2 or something of the ilk.

Much tighter final than I had anticipated (and most people, I imagine), but not a high quality one.

Durrant missed a ridiculous amount. McGeeney had three match darts but didn’t take the chance, then went to pieces.

Durrant wins 7-6, but I won’t be rewatching this on YouTube in 5 years!

poor standard final but a enjoyable game to watch never the less. there has been a few games like that. id be surprised if the bdo has much legs left in it with durrant going over. could be the last bdo final we will see with any resemblance of a top level darter chucking in it

I think it's considered unlikely that Durrant is going to switch.

Q School deadline is tomorrow, and he is yet to enter.

Depends upon the future of the BDO. He’s not good enough to be competitive at PDC level, in all honesty. Averaging around the 90 mark, is evidence of that. I’d personally remain at BDO, and hoover up two or three more world championships to his name. If he switches, he’ll just fade in to the shadows of the PDC.

I think if Durrant switched, he'd be around 17-32 in the PDC rankings*. He can average 100 (twice in this tournament), but really struggles with pressure situations. The grind of the PDC floor tournaments really set Bunting back, so it would be interesting to see how Durrant would cope.

*Looking at the Order of Merit, that's around £60,000-£110,000 in prize money a year, with the potential to earn so much more.

The future of the BDO is very uncertain, more than ever. I believe the television deal for Lakeside expires this year, and neither broadcaster seemed enamoured with the coverage (little publicity, often shunted to BT Sport's second or third channel). Prize money is likely to dip.

The BBC reportedly gave it up last time due to budget cuts, so maybe if the price comes down?

BDO Exodus confirmed, as all of the following are off to Q School.

Hughes (Good call)
O'Shea (About 10 years too late)
Atkins
Menzies
Noppert (Good call)
Fitton (Two decades late?!)
Nilsson

Possibly De Vos and Veenstra as well.

Durrant no way near good enough to mix it in the PDC. Durrant is a nice enough chap, but BDO is his level.

Durrant is a good player. He beat Wright (before losing later on) and Chizzy at the Grand Slam last year - could easily see him making top 16 in a couple of seasons if he fancied it. But don’t blame him for taking 100k at the Lakeside + exhibition money marketing himself as ‘World Champ’ at his age.

Noppert and Hughes could make an impact eventually. Both young enough to improve by going full time and can score like top 16 players. The rest, don’t really care.
