Dragons Season Thread - 2018/19 - aka Year 2 of the 3 Year Plan
First topic message reminder :
So we made it to the end of the 2017/18 season. We've seen/endured the first year of Bernard Jackman's plan. I think most of us have been through a rollercoaster of emotions, similar to previous seasons but perhaps even more so this season given the new injection of life and investment into the Dragons. First there was the hope - the new coaches, some new players, the new pitch, new chairman, new cash injection. Then we started to stumble - it's all down to the new coach and getting used to the new systems, we said. Then came the face plant and the realisation that this trend was going to carry on for the whole season - a couple of wins in the league, a few in Europe, a lot of spankings, not many losing bonus points. Very poor return. The hope turned to despair and BJ's methods were being questioned. Then the hope comes again with the announcement of new signings ('stellar' signings, compared to previous years!) and the assurance that the 1st year of the plan was always going to be difficult and that year 2 would be the one to judge BJ on.....
So.......on to year 2 (2018/19). Where are we? What are our expectations (realistically)? What's the best team we can put out on paper and how competitive will it be? For a number of years we've been stuffed in the league so seem to try to get some solace from a decent showing in the Euro 2nd tier comp. However, should we forget about Europe and try to put all of our focus on the league? I think so.
Transfers - we've lost more than we've gained, although the quality of the transfers in could/should be better than those leaving. But I'm worried we'll be thin on the ground when the inevitable injuries hit.

I'm not convinced by Sage at 12 mind.Luckless Pedestrian wrote:I'm surprised in a good way that he says he's not going to take risks with Dixon. We won't get double points if we beat the Blues. It's a long season.

They're moving Adam Warren to 12, apparently.

I went to watch training for a bit earlier, as I was up that way.
Landman sat out. I reckon Brown is starting on Sat. Dixon was only doing shuttles, with somebody else. Wasn’t obvious at all which hooker would be starting, but I’d guess maybe Hibbard. Screech and Joe Davies with the A side. That Lawrence we have signed looked okay throwing in, considering the lineouts were competitive. Don’t know what the A’s lineout has been like.

I did think, but then Hibbard seemed to be throwing first possibly, though they were obviously alternating.

The other guy running with Dixon was probably Keddie actually.
Yeah, a bit of a nightmare getting up there really, especially with the day. I would’ve probably had the Hong Kong game on a Monday somewhere else, like Crosskeys (more central and a homecoming for Dai Rees). I look forward to seeing where the other game is.

89-6 Dragons.
Or Dragons 15-23 Cardiff Blues.

Ian Davies and wet weather. That'll be a penalty fest and a keep it tight fest.
Which of the two minuscule full backs will make the bigger error? Which team has the better goal kicker? How many tries will Dee score from driving line outs?

They seem to have dried up a bit this season, after last season where they were probably our main source of points. Not sure if it's a change of tactics or teams being wiser to the Dragons doing it. Or both.

The last league Derby we won was against Cardiff but that was what, 2014 ?
Our driving maul was pretty handy that day though it hasn't been for some time.
I think it will be a close game, Cardiff's win over the Cheetahs wasn't exactly convincing.
We need really need our guys with niggles back and we'll need to try and frustrate Anscombe and hes in strong form.
I've blagged a corporate seat so it will be a nice change from the wet North anyway.

I was going to be a bit more conservative, funnily enough.
I think your goal kicker is better.

I’m in the Rodney Road seats for a change, instead of the terrace. Paid for central seats. Only trouble with them are, they’re probably fairly close to Geraint Powell

I don't remember any drumming, come to think of it. Just a lot of cheering
The main thing I remember from that game is the amount of time we spent in the Blues' half in the first half (playing towards the North Terrace) - and how little we had to show for it. I'm worried that it'll be a similar story on Saturday. We're an inefficient team.

Heavy rain forecast for Newport on Saturday. Bit early to know for sure yet though. Hope it passes. It's been lovely all week. I swear the weather just waits until a Dragons home game to shat it down

Last I checked, it's meant to be similar to a couple of Saturdays ago when Zebre came - heavy in the morning and lunchtime, lighter by the time the match kicks off. I don't think wet conditions will hurt our chances anyway.

Are there lots of empty seats next to him, one for each of his lodgers?

Ha. I dare say. I haven’t really seen him there, other than seeing him leaning over the tier after games. That’s offputting enough just noticing him.

Navidi and Williams expected back. No surprise. No Manoa or Scully. Jarrod Evans expected to play too.
Interesting from a Dragons point of view, that Botica is named for the A team. I wonder who is back up ten?
I expect it to be.
Harris, Dee (would be my choice, wouldn’t be surprised to see Bernard maybe go Hibbard), Brown, Hill, Nansen, Wainwright, Griffiths, Moriarty, Williams, Lewis, Rosser, Warren, Morgan, Howells, Williams.
Hibbard, Bevington, Jarvis, Taylor, Cudd, Knoyle, Sage, Talbot Davies???

Had a good email off the Dragons today. Very comprehensive, to be fair. Maybe it’s because it’s the first time I’ve been able to attend this season and they’ve seen I’ve got a ticket? Anyway, they reckon it’ll be dry tomorrow, but cold.

So, an abysmal Cardiff performance was more than enough to see off the Dragons in the home team's biggest game of the season. And Jackman and Buttress still promise jam tomorrow.

No, I didn't wait at all.
You're right, though, it seems that the stewards at RP also need to up their game and many of the players.

What was up with the stewards?
Just watching it back now. Pretty low key affair for a derby. Still can’t get over Jackman hooking Dee so early.

Twitter has a few posts noting complaints made to stewards (with no action taken) by fans of both teams - bad language, plus people throwing stuff
I don't understand Jackman's love for Baywatch, either. A three year deal.....
