All respect to John Millman

Post by lags72 on Mon 03 Sep 2018, 6:19 pm

I knew virtually nothing of this guy’s background or his tennis ‘pedgree’ until I read this piece. But, having just done so, I instantly like him a lot Wink

We all (understandably) tend to focus constantly on the big names, and so often to the exclusion of the lesser lights. I think it’s refreshing to learn something of the mindset of someone who has made the second week of a Slam for the very first time - and just how much it means to them, in non-monetary terms.

Unfortunately that’s behind a paywall for me. Millman always seems a top guy though, having come back from serious injury issues. Hope he can give a good account of himself later.

Oh, sorry, didn’t realise ....wouldn’t have linked if I had known.
I have often come up against the paywall myself on The Australian site - but this particular piece was immediately available gratis to me (ie I don't subscribe),  so I just assumed the same scenario would apply for everyone else.

Maybe, just maybe, he can pull off a big shock.......

There will surely be a day that lags actually predicts Fed to win a match, but it won't be today   Wink

Federer down two set to 1 to Millman. Too many misses.

Now that's a cruel irony... I now feel somewhat responsible for Fed's defeat

Don't worry Losty... it wasn't your fault. Smile

So good to have a decent sportsman with good manners in this country again.

After what we've been through - with all the disgraceful behaviour and shockingly poor sportsmanship in tennis and cricket in particular, it's just so good to see a player like John Millman have a special day like that. I wish him all the best in the future.

Being a Queenslander is a huge plus I believe. He seems tough as nails and a true stayer... able to fight back. He was able to put some pressure on the Fed, who surprisingly? cracked at those crucial points. Maybe he's a more modern version of a Pat Rafter grafter type player with some fighting edge and durability on the court? Hope he goes well down the track.

Won't start a new thread, so will post this here.
I got asked to write this last night but the match analysis and history of Millman had been covered in detail.
So I wrote this on the fly...
