Echo that. We didn’t play well, but they didn’t let us and their defence was incredible. We never looked like getting past the gain line and then were clueless as to what to do instead.

Really gutted, but I’m proud of the team as we had a tremendous tournament and getting to the final was an achievement I didn’t expect. Plenty to come from this side and we just got beaten by a better side today.

Congrats SA, and Biltong. In the end, won in style...even got the tries to show for it? clap

Commission England, very different performances last two weeks, seems we copped the better version, or at least I hope we did.

Now we have the first side to lose a pool match and go on to win it.

Also heard they had the Web Ellis Trophy on display behind the England team before the kick off... same as with Australia in the QF, Ireland, France, NZ and Wales in the Semis, etc.

Although I don't believe in such omens - it did prove to be a recurring theme for the losing teams. Wink

Can do no more than echo the congratulations above - the better team on the day won.

SA did to us what we did to NZ - choked the life out of us, and the intense pressure led to mistakes. Oh, and they murdered us in the scrums to boot.

Completely outplayed on the day by a well drilled South Africa side. In a match with very few try scoring opportunities they took their 2 chances well. The second Kolbe got the ball for his try you felt the room of largely English fans I was in deflate!

Outstanding defensive display from the Boks. They strangled England, didn't let the carriers over the gain line and England couldn't compete in the territory game from there.

Big win for us.

First team to win RC and RWC in same year.
3/3 wins in finals
3/7 wins in world cups, best win rate.
First team to lose pool match and win cup.
And finally first final we score tries in.

Congratulations to South Africa. They set out their stall and delivered. Appropriately for Rugby Union they looked increasingly unified through the tournament and all the players are there on sporting merit rather that any political plan.

England, to my mind i don't think they was complacent at all. But may be thought it if they could play like they did against NZ they would win easy. But SA did not aLLow them to play that way.

Delighted for SA - Rassie is a genius and congrats to 32 year old Felix Jones, the first and only Irishman to win a world cup medal (as a coach). Makes me sad to think think what Rassie & Jacques could have done with Munster if they stayed a bit longer.

Fair play to England - they gave us the best game of the tournament last week which probably didn't help them this week. They can be very proud of their achievements in this tournament.

S.A. played very well, I didn't see it coming. England looked a little rattled first half and deteriorated from there. England didn't deal with some of the ref decisions well and then made some bad calls compounding the problems. A bit of a slow car crash like many of England's famous losses often are.
I suppose having lost, at least England won't be public enemy no.1 in the next 6N like last time - small mercies.

Hahahahaha.

Stopped clock is right twice a day. We've had to see all the SH chat fall by the wayside as one after the other fell - Argentina, Australia, then NZ. Crumbs of comfort in the end for you, but a short selective memory helps, as well, clearly...

Alternatively, the non-insane way of looking at things:

England beat Arg: NH
Wales beat Oz: NH
England beat/knocked out Oz: NH
NZ beat/knocked out Ireland: SH
SA beat/knocked out Wales: SH
England knocked out/beat NZ: NH
SA beat/knocked out Eng: SH

4-3 to the NH if you want to put it in hemispherical terms...which, tbh, NO ONE wants to quite like you. 2-2 in terms of knocking out a team in the knockout stages.

It's amazing, but SOMEHOW you've managed to twist what is 'Kiwis in mourning' in to 'troll 606'. As if anyone was in doubt about why you're really here...

Nah, only NZ and SA were genuine contenders. Wales and Ireland thought they were.

Fact is all three NH hopefuls limped out with 20 points or more losses.

England’s win over NZ was the one NH solitary biggest effort, and that came ‘after two years planning’.

SH results went about where we figured, NZ and SA in the top 3. Not my favourite order, but thereabouts what history says will happen.

For those doubting the impact of history on this tournament?

Look at Wales semi exit, look at Irelands, quarter exit, look what happens when you beat NZ in this comp. look what happens when Eddie wins his big semi. Look what happens when SA are underdogs in a final.

It’s all there in the history books.

Tougher than the RWC? New Zealand have twice the success in the RC that they have in the RWC - strange if it's easier.

The first 3N was in 1996 so if it produced anything that would be 5 World Cups rather than 8. Of course since the SH had already won the first three, the RC was all about making money rather RWC success.

It's ironic that the SH are jealous of the money in NH rugby, but are so shortsighted that they can't see NH success would generate more interest and money in the game for everyone.

Not sure if this is meant to be funny. Pretty pathetic post though.

With 24 hours to reflect on the game, I repeat my initial sentiment. The better team won.

England were the best of the losers, which is no consolation, but better than piggybacking on the success of a country 12,000 km away.

Congratuations to South Africa. They were the better team on the day. It was a difficult game for England. If we had scored in the first half when South Africa were defending on their goal-line it might have been a different name on the trophy. Well done South Africa you scored 2 good tries and played the right game for a final.

Very Happy

To be honest, a lot of top teams copped a bloody nose at some point at this World Cup.

Australia against Wales & England
Scotland against Ireland and Japan
Ireland against NZ
England against SA
NZ against England
Wales against NZ
Japan against SA

Aside from South Africa, the only teams you can say had a Good World Cup are Japan and Uruguay. I'd have been delighted with England making the final before the tournament started but the manner of the final defeat takes puts everything in a different light.

More party political stuff from Hansen.

Coach Steve wrote: "Firstly, the northern hemisphere has always had the say about what happens. Six Nations has been doing that for years,'' he said.

"That's one of the issues with our game. We need to become a global game and make decisions that are right for the game, rather than what's right for one region.

"That's the challenge for our game, to put our own personal desires to the side and actually do what's right with the game.''

I believe that's called projection. Pretty clear NZ sees the idea of 'democratising' rugby as a way for it to have more control. The idea Italy has more say than NZ is insane.
