The Hidden Gem Thread Empty The Hidden Gem Thread

Post by Cari Wed 14 Sep 2011, 1:55 pm

In response to Electric Demon's thread about the decline of albums got me thinking. I personally don't think the album is in decline, and one of the advantages of owning an album (as opposed to only the singles released) is you often get tracks which become firm favourites with fans - especially at gigs. The hidden gems on classic albums often get overlooked - either because of the status of that album being classic or because said album is dominated by a huge single and the other tracks appear pale in comparison.

So, to help other music fans, let's make a list of hidden gems. They must be tracks that were issued on an album but were never issued as singles in their own right, and would therefore only be heard on the album. I'll start with a few of my favourites (the album is in the brackets):

U2 - Running To Stand Still (The Joshua Tree)
Duran Duran - The Chauffeur (Rio)
Villagers - To Be Counted Among Men (Becoming A Jackal)
The Beatles - A Day in the Life (Sgt. Pepper)
The Script - Fall for Anything (The Script)
Madonna - X-Static Process (American Life)
U2 - Acrobat (Achtung Baby)
Madonna I Love New York (Confessions on a Dancefloor)
The Stone Roses - Sugar Spun Sister (The Stone Roses)
The Script - Dead Man Walking (Science and Faith)
manic Street Preachers - The Girl Who Wanted To Be God (Everything Must Go)

Morrissey - The World is Full of Crashing Bores
Reel Big Fish - Good Thing
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dosed

Chilli Peppers have had some amazing non-single tracks over the past few albums.

The Masterplan by Oasis is a fantastic album, probably their third best for me, and it's just a collection of B-sides.

Demon - Slash and Burn was a single Wink Off Terrorists I'd go for Born To End or So Dead as my fave non-single tracks.

So Dead is immense. As is Natwest-Barclays-Midlands-Lloyds

Yeah Stay Beautiful was a single Demon. I'd pick I'm Not Working and SYMM from This Is My Truth...just for the vocal melodies more than anything else.

I love the guitar sound on "I'm Not Working" - it's feels kind of distant, which is weird. So many great album tracks on that record. "Ready for Drowning" is my personal favourite.

I could probably pick 2 or 3 from each album at the very least Laugh

Demon - Perhaps we could list them just to help the downloaders...I could do the same for U2. They've done so many - some are much better than the singles.

In fact, sod it, it's my thread...here's the best U2 non-single tracks for downloading:

An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart (Boy)
Stories for Boys (Boy)
I Fall Down (October)
Tomorrow (October)
Scarlet (October)
40 (War)
A Sort of Homecoming (The Unforgettable Fire)
Promenade (The Unforgettable Fire)
Bad (The Unforgettable Fire)
MLK (The Unforgettable Fire)
Indian Summer Sky (The Unforgettable Fire)
Running To Stand Still (The Joshua Tree)
Zoo Station (Achtung Baby)
Acrobat (Achtung Baby)
Love Is Blindness (Achtung Baby)
Zooropa (Zooropa)
When I Look At The World (All That You Can't Leave Behind)
Moment of Surrender (No Line on the Horizon)
Unknown Caller (No Line on the Horizon)

Smile

Demon - I think as U2 went on, they issued the best songs as singles (becoming commercial perhaps?). I couldn't find any outstanding non-single tracks for that or Pop Rolling Eyes

Best mention I've seen here so far is the Blondie song from Parallel Lines

I have to disagree with A Day In The Life though - it may never have been a single but it is hardly a "hidden gem". Anyone with a love of music from that era will know that song. A much better choice from Sgt Pepper would have been Good Morning or Lovely Rita or even She's Leaving Home.

Anyone who owns the Sgt Pepper album already will know them but for those who only know "singles", any one of those songs is a better "hidden gem"

Davie - I think it is somewhat of a hidden gem. I produced this thread for people who aren't familiar with the albums mentioned, and might never have heard that song in particular, or at least in its entirety (given its length it doesn't always get played in full on the radio). The other two you mentioned aren't as good IMO.

As for the Blondie one being the only "best mention" in your opinion - have you actually listened to all the others mentioned? That's the whole point of this thread. You might not have heard of them, and would probably never listen to a song by the artists mentioned, but you could be pleasantly surprised. You shouldn't dismiss them just because you don't like the artist or that type of music.

I'm going to cheat a bit here, I think the following whole album is a hidden gem because it didn't have any singles released from it:

The Orb - The John Peel Sessions.
