Scotland's Greatest Album Empty Scotland's Greatest Album

Post by Doon the Water Fri 04 Nov 2011, 19:22

A bit parochial I know but did anyone else watch it.

I think after all the arguments they ended up with a fairly good list.
Good to see The Waterboys and Snow Patrol there.

Snow patrol scottish, Mr Lightbody accent is a dead giveaway. Any other Scots bands included The Stranglers, Blur or U2.

Yes there was some interesting discussions on the Scottishness of some of the artists.
Rod Stewart caused a fair bit of debate. Pat Nevin semmed to be able to sort out the twisted logic.

I thought Snow Patrol were from Northern Ireland?

Anyway, my fave Scottish album is Once Upon A Time by Simple Minds - shamelessly commercial but superb. Smile

That's interesting, I never really considered the Waterboys to be a Scottish band although I know Mike Scott was Scottish. An (almost) equally large part of the band's success as far as I am concerned was Karl Wallinger who is Welsh (though Wikipedia describes them as a band made up predominately by Scots, English and Irish!)

Good band though

My most favourite album by a Scottish band, and a contender for my favourite album of all time is Costello Music by the Fratellis.

This was a TV programme for a panel of music 'experts' to name a collection of 12 songs from four decades by Scottish based or born artists.
There was a strong debate re Rod Stewart as his only claim was having a Scottish father and wanting to be known as a Scot.
Some other groups were mixed nationalities but played and made their breakthrough in Scotland. [Snow Patrol/Waterboys]

I'm amazed Big Country didn't get a mention...or were they among the nominations?

Great to see Gerry Rafferty in there. Baker Street is one of my all-time faves.

Claiming Ultravox for Scotland because of "wee Midge" is like the Geordies claiming AC/DC for Brian Johnston!

Fair enough Davie, then I'll replace it with If I was.. by Midge Ure. One of his more successful solo efforts post Ultravox in the mid 1980s.
