Christmas Songs - Your Favourite and Worst...
Which Xmas song do you love? And which can you not bear??
My 2 favourites are Greg Lake's "I Believe In Father Christmas" and (surprisingly, because I generally can't stand her...) Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Xmas Is You".
And the 2 that make me want to kick the speakers in are "Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time" by Paul McCartney and "Merry Christmas (War Is Over)" by John Lennon & Yoko Ono. Played to death and for some reason just do my head in. I don't want to hear about how Paul is having a great (extremely rich and meat-free) Xmas.
So what's your love and hate selection???

Re: Christmas Songs - Your Favourite and Worst...
Because they're brilliant:
The Pogues/Kirtsy Macoll - Fairytale of New York
The Alarm - Merry Christmas (War Is Over) - they used a male voice choir instead of kids and it made the song incredibly moving. Better than the original.
Judy Garland - Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas - very moving song.
For nostalgia value, and because they always make me feel Christmassy:
Band Aid - the first and original 1984 version was the best.
Wham! - Last Christmas.
Worst - Band Aid 2 - just utter rubbish.

Favourites - Elton John : Step into Christmas, Wizard : I wish it could be Christmas every day, and The Darkness (whatever their song was called - Don't let the bells end??)
I too hate the two ex- Beatles ones. And that Bing Crosby and David Bowie one.

The proper old school ones are my favourites, the ones like Let it Snow, White Christmas, the Christmas Song etc. Not a fan of the 70's songs like Slade and Wizard.

Bo Selecta - Proper Crimbo
The Darkness - Don't Let The Bells End
Mick Jagger & Joss Stone - Lonely This Christmas (Not a MUD cover)

It's not showing signs of stoppin'
And I've brought lots of corn for poppin'
is my favourite line in any Xmas song (may be a little inaccurate, but you know what I mean)

Watch out Santa 'coz here I come,
'Coz I sleep on the floor, never ever on a bed,
That's Santa's style so in your head,
It's me just up come sit on my knee,
Got gifts for y'all what you got for me,
Cha'mone (Cha'mone), Cha'mone (Cha'mone),
Cha'mone check check da cone,
I said Bubbles ain't a monkey she can move real funky,
Cha'mone check check da cone, (that's right) Ow!

"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" was originally done by Jimmy Boyd. There have been numerous cover versions including The Jackson Five.

I've no idea. I think Cari may have got it with Dina Carroll...she tends to know that kind of stuff.
And since this tends not to get played much (as far as I know) here's Chris de Burgh's offering:

Now you are talking - 80's John Cusack Films! One of my fave comedies of all time is a film called "Better off Dead"

Re: Christmas Songs - Your Favourite and Worst...
Dyre - The Power of Love was released in November 1984 and although it was pipped to the Christmas number one spot by Band Aid, due to the timing of the release, they had a nativity themed video for the song. The band also recorded a Christmas message for the single's B side. I think its message of love also fits in with the traditional symbolism of Christmas and the nativity etc, so it's just endured as a Christmas song ever since.
